synopsis! in which heeseung realizes he’s in love with his best friend at 2 am while eating ramen

“Heeseung?” your soft voice pulls him out of his thoughts. “Are you okay?”

He blinks, head jerking back gently in confusion as if he had just woken up from a daydream.

“Yeah, I'm good,” he says. “Just thinking.”

Your lips curl into a smile, watching him pinch the noodles between his chopsticks and shove them into his mouth which ended up being a bad decision since the ramen was still steaming hot, burning his bottom lip.

“Shit!” he exclaimed, dropping the utensils back into the bowl and pinching his lip.

You laugh. “Dummy, I just told you it's hot.”

He looks at you with a serious expression but you only laugh again, the way he pinches his lips forces them into a pout that you find incredibly endearing.

“Dude, that fucking burned,” he complains, voice altered from still clutching his bottom lip that’s starting to lose circulation due to his unnecessary tight grip.

“Did you try asking the soup to cool down?” you quip, a satisfied smirk on your face at your own lame joke.

“Hahaha, so funny,” he retorts with a roll of his eyes.

You decide to stop teasing him and grab two ice cubes from the freezer, dropping one into his soup. “Pro tip,” you simper with a wink. “It helps cool down your soup faster.”

You grab his wrist and move his hand away from his face with care, gently you bring the ice cube to his bottom lip, he flinches away at first but after a stern look from you, he gives in.

You rub the ice cube along his swollen lip with a tenderness that warms his entire body despite having direct physical contact with one of the coldest elements on Earth.

He watches you intently and he can't help but wonder if you've always been this pretty or if it's just the way the dim yellowish light from the oven reflected in your eyes and casts a soft glow on your features that's adding a certain kind of sentiment to this moment.

Though that wouldn't make any sense, he’s been with you like this plenty of times, these 2 am ramen meals were a regular occurrence in your friendship.

Friendship. When did he start to not like the sound of that?

But it wasn't like he had liked the sound of a relationship either. Did he?

Heeseung never wanted to fall in love, he was too scared, but a small part of him had always thought it would be worth the risk if it was with you.

You're the only one who understands him anyway, you never judged him for anything or made him feel bad for making mistakes, you alleviated his mind when he was overthinking, and you supported all his dreams.

Looking at you in this moment, he never felt more inspired to try it. He wondered if you would let him.

“Better?” you ask, taking the melting cube off his lip that had now shrunk in size and you discard the remainder of it in the sink.

“Not really,” he shrugs.

You sigh, a hand falling to your hip. “Heeseung, it couldn’t have burned that bad, stop being dramatic.”

“It did though,” he whines. “You don't understand.”

You scoff, “Of course I do, I eat ramen more than you.”

He turns away from you and you get the feeling he's not really talking about noodles, “No, you don't. You've always been braver than me so you don't understand.”

His tone is harsh and you know he's definitely not talking about the ramen anymore.

It was true you understood Heeseung in many ways but he was certain this was something you didn't understand about him.

“Heeseung,” you place a hand on his shoulder and gently force him to face you again.

You don't urge him to explain. You understand.

You always understand. Even when he thinks you don't.

“What?” his voice is soft and the slightest bit brittle.

Your palms meet the skin of his cheeks and in one quick motion, you kiss him. And he kisses you back.

His big hands hold onto your waist, his cold and swollen lips are too numb to feel your lips properly but he kisses you back as best as he can, pouring all his love into it, and he knows you'll understand.

Heeseung never thought the one for him would be so near but he was glad it was you because now it’s worth the risk, after all, you're the only one who understands.
