I immediately imagined a shiny chatting up a girl after a battle & then these ARC mfs rappel down from a building & land next to them with the wind making their kamas billow majestically. They hear a noise and pull out the heavy weaponry, blasting some straggler clankers to pieces. She's like 😍 and the shiny trooper is like 😔 . Poor vod.

Hi Jana!! I hope your morning/afternoon/time-of-day (maybe I should’ve just said day, idk it’s 5am) is going well!! I’ve been doing some thinking, and I was wondering if you have any tips for drawing clone armor, specifically phase 2 helmets? I love seeing people’s renditions of the faces, especially yours, but I never see tutorials or tips for armor!

aa thanks friend !!! im just going to start off by sharing this basic guide to clone trooper armour by odekiisu--its a very thorough reference that really helped me understand how clone trooper armour worked when i first started drawing clones. and here's two 3d models of clone troopers by abdyla and reizer!

now here’s my own simplified tutorial on how i draw clone troopers. as always, more details below the cut :)

- i like to start off with a rough outline of the body before building the armour around it. it reminds you that there's an actual figure underneath the plastoid, and that also helps build your shapes/body movement etc etc

- while the armour should conform to the body, keep in mind that there's a certain thickness/stiffness to the material. remember that a person is made up of 3d shapes, and so some angles and pieces of armour will be obscured or revealed depending on the angle youre drawing. the 3d model really helps you get a better understanding of how lights/shadows work on clone trooper armour!

- if you're unsure about how certain pieces of armour work, it might help to break down the shapes and practice drawing them individually in different angles before trying to draw the whole armour set (hence me zooming into certain more complicated pieces)

- and of course, don't be afraid to study how other artists draw armour :)

Whumptober 2024 - Day 4 - "you're still alive in my head" (Billy Locket, More)

“That form’s not going to fill out itself.” 

Fives sighs. “I know that. I’m trying to figure out how to word this.” 

“You’re trying to figure out how to lie on an official report,” Echo deadpans. 

“I’m not going to lie,” Fives counters. “I’m going to embellish to hide the ugliness of the truth. Those are two very different things.” 

“Hmm,” Echo hums, unimpressed by the argument. “Rex is going to see right through your osik. So will the General.” 

“Well, then,” Fives says with a grin, “I guess I’ll just write for their entertainment.”

“Reports aren’t supposed to be entertaining. They’re supposed to be informative.” 

“They can be both if they’re not written by you,” Fives croons. He begins typing. 

“Don’t forget to add where you dropped into the wrong corridor,” Echo says. 

Fives grunts. “That’s irrelevant.” 

“Seems relevant when you set off two alarms doing it.” 

“I deactivated them before I got caught, didn’t I? I’m an ARC, I improvised.” 

“You were sloppy.” 

“I would’ve liked to see you do better,” Fives snaps. His breath catches for a moment and he stops typing. “No. You would’ve done better.”

Echo doesn’t answer for a long moment, and Fives is afraid he left. He closes his eyes and waits. “We all make mistakes,” Echo says finally. “Just…you need to be more careful, Fives.” 

“I’m trying,” Fives mutters. “It’s not the same without you covering my six.” 

“I’m not the only brother who can have your back,” Echo says. 

Fives frowns down at the datapad gripped in his fists. “But I need you.” 

“I’m not there,” Echo tells him. He sounds like he’s pleading. “You have to carry on, Fives.” 

“Easier said than done,” Fives murmurs. 

A knock behind him makes Fives turn, and Rex stands in the doorway. “Got that report almost finished?”

Fives clears his throat. “Um, yeah—yes, sir. Almost finished.” 

Rex nods. “Good, man.” His expression shifts. “First solo mission.” 

“Yes, sir,” Fives says. 

“You holding up?” 

“Of course. Carrying on.” Fives tries to smile. He knows Rex isn’t convinced. 

The Captain doesn’t say so. He only nods again and leaves Fives to finish his report. 

“Echo?” Fives whispers. 

Silence, deep and empty. Then, “I’m here, Fives. I’ll always be here.”

I listened to the song More by Billy Locket on repeat while writing this story (which is where the prompt came from for today!). Please, please listen to it...it's such a beautifully tragic song, and I couldn't help but think about our clone boys while listening to it 😭

I love this! In my head, he looks like the king from Tangled, but like way more sleep deprived & stressed... which actually weirdly fits the profile you made lol

Irl I can't really think of who I would cast, maybe Jeffrey Dean Morgan? He sort of looks the part, but he's so John Winchester to me, I have hard time picturing him as a Jedi lol

My headcanon stats and thoughts for Jedi Master Arligan Zey that no one asked for:

Age: 49. He seems older than Obi-wan, but is only 'graying' by the end of The Clone Wars so he's not that old.

Height/Build: 6'4. He's described as a "large, muscular man" with "huge" hands. I could go taller... but... then Bardan (a foot shorter) would never be in frame in my mind's cinematic universe. In Order 66 when Zey is angrily tracking down Vau to ask him why Kal got beat up, he's described as a 'giant hawk-bat of a man.'

Physical characteristics: All we know is he has a beard, his hair is "shaggy" in 501st, and he's graying. That's... it. So I'm going with mousey brown hair. Hazel-brown eyes, with crow's feet. He has a long, straight nose and a prominent brow. Zey is, as I previously described, "kinda handsome."

Alignment: Lawful good. He's close-ish to lawful neutral, at least when he's dealing with Kal (see: turning a blind eye to the terrorist op in Triple Zero, also asking Vau to spy on Kal which I'm not saying was a smart move but it's... not lawful good!)

See how we err toward lawful neutral/true good/true neutral? Very mindful.

Facecast: Christoph Waltz: This is who Krad based her Zey art off of! He has had a pretty long acting career so it's nice to see lots of pictures at different ages.

Zey at the start of the war before the light has left his eyes (Waltz is a little older than my Zey headcanon age btwfyi)

More thoughts in no particular order:

I think Zey is a little less refined and a lot more rough and tumble, he seems deeply uncomfortable with the desk job as Director of Special Forces and gets visibly upset/angry at a few points in the book. He's capable of being the diplomatic Jedi, but he's also been described as crashing through conversations.
