It was about 12:00 when Jungkook walked through the doors of the coffee shop and stood in front of Chaerin with a cheeky smile.
“You still came today?” she was genuinely surprised, which Jungkook found amusing. He just continued smiling at her as she waited for him to say something worthwhile.
After a few more seconds of nothing, Chaerin opened her mouth to say something again. “Jungkook? You know you didn’t have to come today, right? We talked last night.”
Jungkook finally responded with a nod, but that just confused Chaerin even more.
“Why are you here???” she asked starting to feel a little annoyed. He finally let out a little laugh and sat down on the stool next to her.
“I really just wanted coffee, and since I knew you would be here, I decided to take a lunch break to head here anyway,” he answered. He was still smiling, which was very unnerving to Chaerin. She was starting to feel a little uncomfortable and embarrassed as he continued looking at her.
“Okay, but why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, causing Jungkook to laugh again. At this point she was getting self conscious, “Do I have something weird on me or something??”
Jungkook just let out more laughs as he shook his head, “No! I met a girl this morning and she accepted my date to get coffee at lunch time. That’s really why I’m here. You’re hard to crack! I thought I could get you to blush, but all I did is make you mad.”
Chaerin blinked and nodded, “So you asked a girl out? And she said yes? Just some random girl?”
Jungkook held up his hand and moved it from side to side, “I sorta already knew her. She and I went to the same High School.”
“Oh…” Chaerin nodded as she saw someone come in the front door. It was this really pretty girl wearing a really short dress. She had long blonde hair and a tattoo of a heart on her neck where it would be hard to hide it. At the sight of Jungkook, she smiled and rushed up to him. He smiled and greeted her as she greeted him back. He told her to find a seat and that he would order for her.
“I need you to help me out if anything goes wrong… that’s why I chose to ask her out here.” he explained as Chaerin nodded.
She didn’t know why but she was a little annoyed and upset that he found a date. Not only did he find a date, but he didn’t even need her help! She made this whole agreement with him, yet she doesn’t do a thing but go to this weird rich people party and threaten to call the deal off after one day.
They seemed to be having a good time, too. She was giggling and he was smiling, and the conversation never died. They talked about old high school memories and where they were now and what they did for fun. She heard the whole conversation as she sat in the back. She tried to drown out their conversations, but some of them she just couldn’t tune out of.
“Well it was nice talking to you, but I’ve gotta run to work again,” she heard the girl say, “I want to do this again! You should text me when you’re free so we can schedule a time!”
The girl left almost seconds after saying that. Jungkook threw away the remains of the coffee they hadn’t consumed, and headed over to Chaerin afterward.
“I think that went well… what about you?” Jungkook asked as Chaerin just gave him a nod. He waited for her to say more on it, but she didn’t say anything, “Her name is Miyoung, and I actually dated her for a few weeks in high school. I was surprised she was willing to go on a date with me after how weird I was when I dated her before.”
Chaerin just nodded and left the conversation to fall flat. Jungkook was surprised she didn’t comment on what he said, but he just looked at the clock.
“I’ve gotta go, Chaerin. Thanks for the coffee,” he smiled and waved, but she pretended to not notice. He was in too much of a rush to really say anything about it, so he just ignored it.
Once he disappeared, Chaerin sighed and leaned against the counter for support. Why did she even agree to this complicated thing if he was just gonna turn around and find a girl without her help? She shouldn’t have agreed to this stupid thing. Maybe she should have just gone on that stupid double date with Kiseung…
Those thoughts clouded her mind literally all day until she clocked out. She was getting sick of thinking about it, so she turned her phone off and just headed home in silence.
***
It had been a week and a half since she had heard from Jungkook again, and she was pretty upset about that. Their deal was just like a one day thing, and now she was back to her normal life. It was like she never had a pretend boyfriend at all. Her friends would never know.
She finally had a whole day off of the coffee shop, so she decided to just go to the park and read a book or two in the sun. It wasn’t something she did often, but she liked to do it on days that weren’t too hot, but were warm with a breeze blowing.
She had probably been reading for ten minutes when her phone started buzzing like crazy. It was too bright to see the screen clearly, so she just answered the call with a “Hello?”
“Chaerin!”
Chaerin felt her stomach drop at the sound of his voice. She was seriously pissed at him for totally ditching her of any information the past week. She just assumed the deal was off since he found a girl that likes him.
“Chaerin, God! I’ve been trying to text you all day, but you never replied!”
Chaerin gave a confused look and then pulled the phone away from her ear. She moved into some shade and then remembered that she put her phone’s messages on ‘do not disturb’ since last night. She had been getting spammed in a group message with Hyomin, Nari, and Kiseung, and she found it really annoying. Since she wasn’t in a great mood for the past few days, she just decided to mute her texts.
“What do you need, Jungkook?” she asked to get to the point. She wasn’t up for conversation at the moment.
“I...I uh… well, do you remember that girl I told you about the other day?” he asked. She gave a simple yes and waited for him to continue. “I’m short on time, you know? So I asked the girl if she would be willing to marry me soon if she could…”
Chaerin could tell exactly where this is going. She probably freaked out on him and told him to never see her again. Or something like that.
“Well, she got uncomfortable and told me that was too short of a notice…” he rubbed his forehead, “I never thought of this as being an issue… I feel like it’s even more hopeless finding someone. The only people who would marry me in less than six months are desperate people, people I already know, or someone who’s forced into it… At this point I feel like I just have to choose from that list. No matter what, I’m screwed.”
Chaerin listened the whole time and felt frustrated that she was feeling bad for him. He just left her in the dust for a few days right after making this agreement…
“Look Chaerin, I know you’re probably mad, but I really need your help here. I need someone to marry, but I don’t know what to do…” he sounded seriously upset with the whole situation.
Chaerin sighed and tried to put her frustration and anger out of the picture to focus on the problem in front of her. “I don’t know, Jungkook… I can’t solve all of your problems…”
Jungkook sighed heavily and his voice got quieter, “I’m gonna seriously need your help, Chaerin… I don’t want to force anyone to marry me… I don’t want anyone money hungry or desperate…”
“I don’t know how I can help you, Jungkook,” Chaerin shook her head, “It’s not like I can go out on the streets and tie up the first girl I see and force her to marry you.”
“I’m not asking you to do that, Chaerin,” he sighed.
“Well then what could you possibly want me to do?” Chaerin was starting to feel his stress through the phone. It was contagious! “There’s nothing else I can do.”
Jungkook went silent for a while as Chaerin just waited for him to finally speak.
“I just really need help…”
His voice sounded so upset, and it made Chaerin really surprised. He wasn’t cold hearted or anything; she just didn’t see him as the type to show vulnerability. As him being next in line for CEO, was it wrong for her to assume that?
Chaerin sighed and found herself looking around the park she was in. There weren’t too many people there, but she did see a group of young looking girls.
“Don’t worry,” she finally replied, “I’m not backing out on you.”
Jungkook’s end was silent for several seconds before she finally heard a response come from his end, “Thank you, Chaerin…”
“You’re welcome,” she replied, hanging up on him right afterward. Her eyes went back to the group of girls she had been looking at previously. They were playing volleyball and she noticed they were short one person.
I guess I should go get to know them. She thought as she got up off the ground and headed in the girls’ direction.
***
“I met some girls yesterday,” Chaerin informed as Jungkook met her at the coffee shop that morning. He seemed really tired and stressed, and she was happy that she had good news to bring him. “One of them was single and agreed to go on a date with you. She seems really nice and she’s very pretty.”
Jungkook gave a tired noise to say that he heard her, but she was pretty sure that he had no idea what she actually said.
“Her name is Hyemi. I got her number for you if you want to text her and set up a date,” she pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to him, but at this point his head was buried in his hands.
“What?” Chaerin asked, tapping Jungkook’s hands, “I'm trying to help you out, here…”
“I know…” he mumbled out, removing his hands from his face, “I'm just seriously tired. I've been trying to put more faith into finding someone, but it's hard.”
“Well I have a someone’s number in my hand,” she waved the piece of paper that was in between her first and second fingers, “you should give her a try before you freak out. You do still have a good bit of time. It’s only been three weeks since the deadline was set.”
Jungkook looked at the number in her hands and then to her. He slowly reached for it and looked at it, unlocking his phone to put in the digits.
“See? Not all hope is lost. You’re cute, so you could get a lot of dates between now and the deadline.”
“I don't need dates,” he partially snapped, “I need someone who I fall in love with to marry me…”
Chaerin sighed and watched him type out a text to her, “I know… but we’re in this together. I'll find you a wife one way or another!”
Jungkook looked up at Chaerin and a small smile appeared on his face, “You make things seem so much better than they really are.”
Chaerin smiled back, “Well someone’s gotta keep you straight through this situation!”
Jungkook kept smiling as he looked down at his phone and sent the text he had just typed out, “I seriously lucked out on finding someone as cool as you.”
***
“Jungkook, just because this girl did work out doesn't mean none of them will,” Chaerin sighed, “you really just need to be more confident. I bet there are even girls you used to know that you wish you dated. Try and find out where they are now!”
Jungkook had made it a routine to come to the coffee shop in the mornings. It had been about five days since his meltdown, and he was feeling just as nervous about the situation now as he was then.
“I just… I'm really frustrated. I didn't want to think about love right now! I've almost hit the one month mark, so that means only five left.” He responded, causing Chaerin to take a deep breath.
“I know…” she started, “but you don't have time to be discouraged! Like I said before, you look good! Your looks alone could win a girl’s heart, you just need to find the right one.”
Jungkook stayed silent for a few more seconds, but he could feels himself calming down a bit. Her words felt like a spell sometimes, and he felt really grateful for that. “I just need a few minutes to calm down more. Hopefully I'll feel a little better after I take a few minutes to take a breather.”
“Go right ahead,” Chaerin nodded, watching him walk off to sit at a table near the back of the shop.
A small amount of time passed as the store doors opened. A young girl walked through and looked straight forward at Chaerin. She was still cleaning and prepping to open since they didn't open for another ten minutes.
The girl looked horrified when she realized she had walked in before they were even open, “Oh my God, I'm so sorry.”
Chaerin just shook it off, “it's alright! I'm almost done cleaning this machine and I'll be ready to take your order.”
The girl apologized a few more times and bowed apologetically, and she took a seat in the booth that was fairly close to Jungkook. Chaerin looked at Jungkook and nodded her head toward the girl. This opportunity was perfect, was it not?
He looked from the girl to Chaerin as he took a deep breath. He couldn't just let this opportunity slip from his hands like this.
He moved to her booth and smiled, introducing himself. Their conversation went well as Chaerin smiled at them from behind the desk. She really hoped that he would find the right girl soon.
***
Jungkook’s friends never really came to the coffee shop, and Chaerin had a feeling that Jungkook would avoid going to that place with them on purpose. The only thing Jungkook couldn't monitor was if they went while by themselves.
She had seen Seokjin there a lot, and even after she met him at the party he had visited a good bit. He never said anything to her about it, but he would sometimes eye her from his seat near the front window.
She wasn't worried about him at all until one day, he came in with Namjoon. They came in while having what seemed like a serious conversation, but she couldn't tell what it was about at all. They stepped up to the desk and began ordering as she recorded their orders. She actually thought that they both didn't recognize her as she repeated their order and began ringing it up… that was until Namjoon threw that hope out the window.
“You're definitely that girl Jungkook’s dating.” He said firmly and confidently. Even Seokjin looked a little surprised at his tone, “why haven't we heard anything about you since that party?”
Chaerin took a deep breath and gave a polite smile, “I've only seen Jungkook while I was working, really. He’ll stop by sometimes and we’ll talk. It's not ideal, but at least I get to see him.”
“Why are you even with him?” Namjoon shot back almost immediately as Seokjin elbowed him a little bit for his blunt tone.
Chaerin seemed to falter a little bit as she tried to think of a good answer, “He’s been nothing but nice to me, and I enjoy being around him when I can be. Despite such the short time frame of getting to know him, I feel it’s enough time for me to fall for him. I've already started to.”
Seokjin’s eyebrows raised, “you’re so open about it…”
Chaerin looked down and tried to play it off like that didn't worry her. She didn't want them to catch her lying… it would all be over if they did. “Is that wrong? I'll admit he was just cute at first, but he’s actually really sweet. But don't tell him any of that! I want to be the one to tell him…”
“But he doesn't want to marry someone he doesn't love or that doesn't love him,” Namjoon didn't miss a beat.
“Well, at first we just kinda dated to see if it would work, and since he hasn't broken up with me yet, I would say that it was a good sign.”
Seokjin was buying it all, but Namjoon was way more skeptical. He didn't say anything else of the subject and just left after getting his coffee.
Chaerin felt like she could finally breathe again once they exited the building. She hoped that didn't make anything worse for Jungkook and herself… but she honestly wasn't too sure.
Again, I’m sorry it’s short! Dx
