Hey, letʼs forget about all history canons for a sec!
I want to know about your own headcanon with these two if you donʼt mind.

Relationships between nations are a really complicated thing. They have a huge responsibility on their shoulders and they cannot build relationships and live like ordinary people. In order not to break down and not lose themselves, they can create a semblance of some kind of relationship between themselves. These weird relationships are hardly similar to what we have, but they help nations not to go crazy.
Some become so “attached” to each other that they will stick close even if they look like they're going to slit each otherʼs throats. Like France and England. Like Russia and America. On the one hand, they are tired of seeing each other, on the other hand, they have spent so much time together that they consider their “hurt-comfort” or “hate-love” relationship something natural.
I’ve always thought about why Francis taught Matthew to called him “papa” while Arthur told Alfred that they were brothers.
I suppose once personifications get colonies they have the power to create whatever relationship they want with that colony. And remember, they’re still “human” in a way. So most of them decide that they want their new colonies to have a sort of familial relationship with them.
Arthur went down the “older brother” path with his colonies because of his own older brothers. He grew up the youngest and wanted to be the older one for once. He was probably picked on when he was little and was under the impression that he would be a “so much better and nicer” older brother.
Also throughout history he was pretty terrible and cruel to his older brothers. So he kinda screwed up his relationship with them. I can see Arthur looking at Alfred, thinking that this would be his “second chance.” Ya he ended up screwing that up as well. Nice job Arthur.
Idk as nations familial relationships are just complicated. Imagine being someone’s older brother while also being their literal colonizer. But as beings who outlive any humans they meet, they’re really only able to make that sort of connection with each other. Because getting that close to any human will inevitably just lead to heartbreak.
I can go on a whole nother rant about how the nations are probably always battling with what it means to be a personification—with what they feel is their duty to their own people and country—and battling with just being human. Like humans they want to experience love and friendship and want families.
Arthur viewed Alfred as his little brother, but he also viewed Alfred as his colony. America was this child he loved cared for and America was this piece of land that he colonized and controlled.
Anyway I’ve made myself sad now.
And two more versions about Alfred which I have heard from Americans.
His glasses represent Texas state (canʼt say something about it, I have no clue).
It also gives Alfred the feel of being like Superman. Think Clark Kent, when he takes off his glasses and he’s Superman, I think that is what Alfred tries to do, to add onto his “I’m the hero!” mindset.
According to my feelings, about Alfred I know everything what I ever could know about a character.
And when you interested in Matthew, you suppose to be attentive, patient and think about his character a lot, because something concrete you rarely find online.
Letʼs talk about the reason(s) why na brothers wear glasses?
I stumbled upon the theory that Alfred wanted to seem like a fool. Without glasses, he looks smarter. However, he wants to stay in his role. So that his world order is preserved under his leadership and no one doubts that he is not actually dumb. That is, he can calmly maintain a world order that is convenient for him, as long as others are convinced of his stupidity.
And if Alfred really doesnʼt have vision problems, then perhaps he persuaded Matthew to wear glasses together so that there would be no suspicion. Like, Matthew is unlikely to refuse Alfred anything. And he takes advantage of it.
With glasses, they look even more alike. Also, since theyʼre twins, it would be a bit strange if only one of them wears glasses (I think).
That is, summarizing, we get this: America wants to pretend to be a silly guy and has persuaded Canada to wear glasses too.
One more thing, by the way. Thereʼs an opinion (not mine) that Al does all this on purpose, that he understands how bad and fool he is compared to his brother. And he does a lot to make Matthew invisible. According to this view, Alfred is the cause of all his problem.
More positive version, if I made you feel sad:
For some reason, it seems to me that Matthew really has problems with his eyesight. Then the version that Alfred wears glasses as if “in support” of Matthew will be appropriate.
Like, “the hero will not leave you alone!”
I have wanted to say something like “I will be with you, together”, but I accidentally translated it too literally and this phrase sounds funny, I like it.
Can his ego still become more inflated? Or is infinity not the limit for Americans, mm??
After watching too many Hollywood superhero movies in one sitting, Matthew stares at himself in the mirror, tries styling his hair and winking like Alfred and whispers “I’m the hero! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧” under his breath.
Sure. When you donʼt express your position/opinion for a long time, you may just get confused and completely have no clue what to say when someone suddenly asks you to voice what you think about something. If you used to do what you were told without any disputes/arguments and will refuse to make decisions on your own; in this case you already will have the big problems with understanding what you want.
Yeah, because no one can be perfect, dear. Hm, “hurts his feelings without realizing”. If a person will not tell you, you will never know what he thinks about. I canʼt read your mind, you canʼt read mine, thatʼs what I try to say. And giving the fact that Matthew doesnʼt talk/say/tell/speak (too many words, meaning the same...) about himself- you get the idea. I donʼt blame Matyusha, never ever. But we both know that itʼs not only Fredyʼ fault, yeah? When you feel that a person makes you feel bad, you can (and have to) say about it. If you didnʼt he may unknowingly pour salt on your wounds over and over again.
(Thank you, it definitely cheered me up!! I also try to learn Spanish, but keyword is “try”, haha)
When Alfred makes Matthew laugh, Matthew lets out a little giggle and immediately tries to cover it up with a cough because he can’t let his “totally loud annoying obnoxious brother” know that he actually finds him funny.
When Matthew makes Alfred laugh, Alfred laughs. Even if it’s not that funny of a joke, Alfred will laugh hysterically like it’s the most hilarious shit he’s ever heard. And his laughter is loud and contagious so Matthew ends up laughing as well. So they’re both just there laughing like dorks at a joke that wasn’t even that funny to begin with.
(Also I have a headcanon that when Alfred laughs really hard he leans against people and will put his head on their shoulders)
It feels like Iʼve just read my own headcanons. I think Al really starts leaning on someoneʼs shoulder when he laughs hard. Even now, I can imagine Alfred laughing, clutching his stomach with one hand, leaning on Matthewʼ shoulder with the other, and tears of laughter in his eyes.
(Although, in my opinion, he always laughs very loudly. But this is my opinion as a person who always tries to laugh quietly, because Iʼm embarrassed to attract unnecessary attention)
