It’s been years of doing this, these painful pricks in his skin. And yet, he still can’t help but feel a range of emotions as he prepares the necessary medical equipment. It feels almost ritualistic, now, the way he sanitizes and double-checks his work, such a part of him that it’s no longer foreign or scary.

It is, however, private. Something he doesn’t share with anyone. Only Sirius has been allowed to stay. How can he allow people this, when he might then have to explain the way it both hurts and helps, to inject the hormones into his body? When he might have to verbalize the overwhelming emotion that overcomes him in this moment- euphoria, that this is possible; anger, that this is necessary. 

So it is a step, a giant step -the biggest step he’s ever taken in his life, he thinks- that he has invited James to stay this time. 

It’s taken ages for him to even think about it, months for him to bring it up, and thank the lord James hasn’t pushed at all, or he might have had to start the whole ‘thinking about it’ process over again. But James is patient. He never pries. He only asks questions that are so heart-meltingly validating, how can Regulus want anything but to have James here, in this moment?

But he still is rethinking his decision, as he prepares. Wondering what he has gotten himself into, to allow James such intimacy. Until James moves.

He maneuvers himself behind Regulus, so one leg is on his either side, Regulus’s back pressed into his chest. And when Regulus finally, wordlessly, completes the injection, James only wraps his arms loosely around his waist. Whispers in his ear, “You’re perfect, you know.”

His chest warms and he feels so, so, loved. And he’s never not regretted letting someone into his life more.

Regulus who, even when transitioned, still has thighs and needs to wear belts because his hip to waist ratio is too great. Regulus who feels confident about his curviness and doesn't think of it as feminine or dysphoric, because it's a part of him, and he's a man. Regulus who get kissed and bitten on the softest parts of the his body and loves the things it does for him. Regulus who doesn't have a flat chest. Regulus who loves himself.
