Inspired by the 2011 South Korean drama Dream High. For every time Jay Park ruined your life, he gave you a lollipop. Of course, he gave it to you anonymously, because how embarrassing would it be if people found out that the legendary trainee Jay Park gave lollipops to the girl whose life he kept ruining?

The time he ruined your audition.

On the day that Jay Park muttered an emotionless and unapologetic “oops” in your ear during Kirin Arts High School’s auditions, approximately one minute and thirty-seven seconds before your own, you decided that he was put on this earth solely to ruin your life.

And really, you would’ve forgiven him if he’d just shown even just a sliver of remorse.

But an “oops”?

“So you just spill coffee on people for fun?” you’d asked, hissing from the heat of the coffee and the shock of the large figure crashing into you as you made your way around a corner. You couldn’t even think about the words before they just exited your mouth.

“So you just bump into people for fun?” his deep voice replied, matching your tone.

“I feel like I’m getting a third-degree burn as we speak!”

“Well, your blouse looks better brown anyways.”

 . DAY ONE FATE

SUMMARY âŠč After being saved from a demon by two Shadowhunters named Sunghoon and Jay, you are taken to the Decelis Institute, their base of operations, to find out more about yourself. Because unlike what you once thought, you are no ordinary human. You are Nephilim — part-human, part-angel.

WARNINGS âŠč profanity, violence, blood, minor gore, minor injury

NOTES âŠč ( approx word count: 5.1k ), text between black dividers are flashbacks, this chapter is more of exposition and intro — so hopefully the next chapter is more interesting 😗 ✌

AUTHOR’S NOTES âŠč this ended up being finished a lot slower than i initially planned bc i hated how the first draft turned out and scrapped it before starting all over again đŸ«  my first written fic let’s goooo đŸ€

DISCLAIMER âŠč everything in this work is fiction and is not meant to be accurate depictions of how the mentioned idols behave in real life in any way.

 . DAY ONE FATE

IF THERE WAS ONE THING THAT WAS CERTAIN IN THIS WORLD, it was uncertainty. No one could know for sure what would happen in a day — in a matter of seconds, even. One moment, the world could seem as clear as your reflection in a mirror; and the next, the glass could shatter before your very own eyes.

Your current situation was like that in a way.

You sighed as you observed your unfamiliar surroundings. This room was apparently a guest bedroom, and you felt it all too clearly: the bareness of the white walls and the tidiness of it all was so unlike your own room at your home, where picture frames and posters decorated every corner of the room, filling the space with a life full of memories.

Still, you supposed this room fit you better. Its emptiness was a physical representation of what you truly knew about yourself, seeing as the life you had lived for the past nineteen years was a lie.

“So you’re the one the hyungs were going on about?”

You lifted your head, forcing your eyes away from the ice pack in your hands to see an unfamiliar face standing at the doorway.

Your first impression was that he was incredibly tall. Upon first glance, one might mistake him for a model, with his long and elegant limbs, paired with a natural air of confidence and charisma that drew the eye. But despite it, you had a feeling that he was rather young as well. Not a boy, but not quite a man yet, either.

His long hair — which had blonde highlights running through them and brushed against the tips of his ears — made him seem more boyish, despite the sharpness of his features. And the way he stood, with his head cocked to the side, gave off an air of innocent, puppy-like curiosity that could easily be found endearing.

“Jay-hyung told the others you put up a good fight,” he suddenly said, “but you don’t really look like much to me.”

You scoffed, affronted by his comment.

The events that transpired a few hours ago were still fresh in your mind — and right now, they felt like an open wound with salt being rubbed into it.

To celebrate your first day in Decelis City, you and your new roommate agreed to spend the night out to have some fun. You knew that once your first semester at your university (the prestigious Decelis University, which was the reason you moved to Decelis City in the first place) started, classes and assignments would consume all your free time and you might not often get the chance. So, you eagerly followed her to the Pandemonium — the hottest nightclub in town.

But you didn’t know just how much pandemonium you were in for when you walked through those doors

You sighed.

 . DAY ONE FATE

You screamed.

You fell to your knees, mouth covered in horror at the sight before you–of a blade slicing through flesh, of ink-coloured blood painting the walls black, and of the sight of a crumbling corpse at the feet of a merciless figure. You flinched at the sound of steel cutting through air, as the stranger — murderer? — before you flicked their blade, effortlessly ridding it of the blood that stained it.

The stranger sighed as he sheathed his blade at his side. He titled his head to look at you, hair falling softly over his eyes. Moonlight enveloped his figure like a halo, allowing you to get a glimpse at features that seemed carved from marble — too perfect to be real.

In ordinary circumstances, you would be ashamed of how you looked in comparison to such a fine man, with your torn stockings and messed hair. But as of now, you couldn’t care less.

There were more important things to worry about.

Your eyes flickered over to the corpse at the stranger’s feet. What a truly hideous sight it was: the body of a wolf, the eyes of a spider, and rows of razor-sharp teeth. And how could you forget the scent of rotten flesh and blood on its breath as it cornered you, snarling, drooling, and all too eager to consume you — bones and all? Now, there it was, slowly turning into a pile of ash.

It was unbelievable that — not too long ago — this
thing was disguised as a charming stranger who had almost successfully lured you to your own death by promising you a good time. When you were warned about the potential dangers of following strangers home, you didn’t think one of the risks was them turning into
whatever it was that had just attacked you.

“I wouldn’t look too long if I were you.”

Your eyes darted back to the stranger. His smooth voice snapped you out of your daze, and you realised once again that you were now alone with this sword-wielding stranger who you just watched cut down a rabid monster with little to no emotion.

“It’s not a pretty sight,” he said.

In your shock led state at his nonchalance, you didn’t hear the footsteps sounding behind you.

“Sunghoon, are you finished here?”

You jolted at the sudden voice and whipped around so fast it was a surprise your neck didn’t break.

It was another man. And just like the other in the alleyway with you (the so-called “Sunghoon”), he was in no way lacking in terms of magnetism.

His hair was slicked back, giving full attention to his features. If ‘Sunghoon’ was the image of soft, ethereal beauty, then this newcomer was an image of masculine allure. He had a strong, defined jaw and sharp eyes, which swirled with dark intensity. You noticed that he too carried a weapon — a blade of some sort — in his hand.

“I finished it off just now,” ‘Sunghoon’ replied.

The other man nodded. To your surprise, he then turned to face you. “You must be scared,” he said, his voice surprisingly soothing.

‘Scared’ was putting it lightly. But you didn’t dare say a word.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

Too shocked by what just happened, you shakily replied your name.

“[____]
” He repeated your name, the sound of it rolling naturally off his tongue. “I’m sorry you had to see that. But unfortunately, it looks like you’ll have to get used to it soon enough.”

You didn’t know what sort of expression you wore, but you imagined it was something along the lines of incredulous.

“What do you mean, I’ll ‘have to get used to it?’” you asked, your voice trembling with the shock at your situation. “I don’t even know what the fuck that was I— what even was that? And who are you?”

The two men exchanged looks. ‘Sunghoon’ walked towards you, causing you to flinch back. Seeing your reaction, ‘Sunghoon’ stopped in his tracks. He raised his arms in a position of surrender, conveying his will to do no harm.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he assured.

“Neither of us will,” his friend added. “We never hurt one of our own.”

You turned to the other man with wide eyes. You had no idea what he meant by that; and in your state, you had no idea if you wanted to. Adrenaline was urging you to run, to flee this place — to flee the whole damned city, if needed — to get away from this. And yet, another part of you, hidden deep inside your being, was something telling you to listen to what he had to say. To stay.

And against your better judgement, you did.

Sensing that you were calming down, the unnamed stranger spoke.

“My name is Jay and the one over there is my parabatai — my partner — Sunghoon,” he began. “That monster was a demon, and the two of us are Shadowhunters. We were sent here to finish it.”

You couldn’t believe a single word you were hearing. ‘Parabatai?’ What the hell was that? And not just that — ‘demon’? ‘Shadowhunters’? You only had one drink that night, but you wondered if you were feeling the side effects of alcohol. Because nothing this man, Jay, was saying made any sense.

Still, that wasn’t even the last of it.

“We were sent to track down and execute that demon because it was targeting others of our kind and killing them off,” Jay explained, his eyes trained on you, conveying his earnesty. “And the demon went after you, too, despite not being interested at all in humans — which only means one thing
”

You swallowed nervously. The two men remained quiet as they looked at you, letting the words sink in. You shook your head in denial.

“No That can’t be
” you brought a hand up to your head, running your fingers through your dishevelled locks. “You’re not seriously saying I’m— you’re— you’re crazy.”

“I know it sounds like a lot, but I promise I’m telling the truth,” Jay said, his eyes almost pleading with you to believe him. “The demon went after you for a reason. And the reason is because you’re like us.”

Jay never once broke eye contact with you. And now, you wished he weren’t so honest — because the truth was hard to swallow, this one most of all.

“You’re Nephilim.”

 . DAY ONE FATE

You were Nephilim.

According to Jay, they were descendants of humans and angels — not that you knew what that meant. Apparently, Nephilim children were usually raised to become Shadowhunters. They protected humans from Downworlders (which consisted of vampires, werewolves, warlocks, witches and the like), with you being an exception, considering you didn’t even know you were anything but human until today.

Your world was essentially flipped upside down. So this stranger essentially telling you that you looked weak grated on your nerves.

“I guess finding out I’m part-angel took a lot out of me,” you replied.

The boy raised his eyebrows before laughing. “Looks like you still have a lot of fight left in you, though.”

You rolled your eyes and turned your attention back to the ice pack you were holding against your wrist. From the corner of your eye, you could see the boy eyeing you up and down — as if trying to assess whether you were a threat or not — before slowly relaxing his stance, so that he was leaning against the doorframe.

“You know, not many people can land a punch on Jay-hyung — even if it’s by surprise,” the boy suddenly said. “You should be proud.”

Despite yourself, you laughed.

The last thing Jay probably expected when enlightening you of your seraphic lineage was to get a punch in the face as you tried to make a run for it. (You didn’t really know why you did it, but you blamed it on the shock.) Unfortunately, the only thing you got out of it was a sprained wrist and an overwhelming amount of guilt. Instead of running, you ended up just fawning over the wound — or lack thereof — on Jay’s face, apologising over and over again as Sunghoon laughed behind you.

The punch seemed to calm you down, however, since you ended up agreeing to follow them here to the Decelis Institute: The base of operations for Shadowhunters in Decelis, as well as an asylum for those under their protection. Yourself included.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t stay with you for too long. They had to leave you in this room while they reported their findings of today, since a lot of the details were classified — meaning they weren’t for the ears of an outsider like you. This boy was the only person you’d interacted with since they left.

He smiled cheekily before removing his weight from the doorframe.

“Can I come in? Sunghoon-hyung sent me to get your wrist checked out, but I can’t really do that from here.”

 “Oh— yeah, sure,” you said.

He took your permission and walked into the room coolly, with long strides. You shuffled over on the bed to make room for him to sit next to you. When he did, the first thing you noticed was that even sitting down he seemed to tower over you. When you thought about it, Sunghoon and Jay were rather tall as well; it made you wonder if part of the Shadowhunters’ training regime for children included taking special supplements to boost their height.

“My name’s Riki, by the way,” he said, as you offered your wrist out to him to take a look. “I’m a Shadowhunter, too. Just like Sunghoon-hyung and Jay-hyung.”

You winced slightly when his fingers prodded at the swollen skin, earning a whispered apology. But you relaxed shortly after, seeing how careful he was afterwards. You wondered, how many times had he done this before? Most probably a lot, considering how dangerous his line of a Shadowhunter’s work was. You weren’t completely helpless — courtesy of your adoptive father training you in self-defence (which you didn’t ever have to use until tonight) — but you didn’t think you were cut out for hunting demons like them.

Somehow, the thought of their struggle made you feel sad.

“Riki?” You tested the sound of his name out, earning a small smile from him.

You noticed that his name didn’t sound Korean. Perhaps he was foreign? Whatever the case, his company was welcome; having someone to talk to was better than stewing in your thoughts alone.

“I’m [_____].”

“Well, [_____], ” Riki said, looking at you from under his eyelashes, “have you ever gotten a tattoo before?”

Your eyes widened, alarmed at the sudden question. “You’re not going to give me one, are you?”

Riki laughed. He shook his head, the action causing his hair to fall over his eyes like a silk curtain.

“No, I’m not. I’m just going to draw a rune on your wrist to help the pain.” He brought out something from his pocket that looked like a very intricately designed steel pen. “It’s kinda the same thing. But don’t worry — this isn’t permanent.”

You let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding. You’d already witnessed so much change today, you didn’t know if you could handle suddenly getting a tattoo out of nowhere on top of that.

You tilted your head as you watched Riki hold the pen over your skin. To your surprise, the pen began to emit light, and he started to draw something on your skin. There was a slight sting as he applied pressure, but nothing overly painful.

“I don’t know how much Sunghoon-hyung and Jay-hyung told you, but runes are what we use to give us added powers — like increased speed and strength. This thing I’m using to draw it on you is a stele,” Riki explained. You watched him curiously as he continued to draw on your skin, more intrigued by his words than you ever were in a classroom. “The rune I’m giving you is to help the pain.”

As he said this, he lifted the pen – the stele – from your skin. The light dimmed to reveal a black symbol, which looked a lot like it was drawn on with ink rather than light. Riki smiled and nodded at his wrist. You hesitated before rolling it slightly, only to find that you couldn’t feel a single bit of pain. You smiled brightly.

“Thank you, Riki,” you breathed out in wonder as you continued to flex the wrist. “You’re awesome.”

Riki let out a laugh before rubbing the back of his neck shyly. If you were looking, you’d notice that the tips of his ears became red from your praise.

“Don’t worry about it.” He cleared his throat before standing, causing you to look up at him. “Anyway, I was told to show you around. If you’re good to go, we can leave now.”

You blinked. You weren’t sure why, but at that moment, your heart skipped a beat. So far you had met three people after arriving at the Institute: Jay, Sunghoon, and now Riki, too. Who else would you meet while you were here?

“Where to first?” you asked Riki, both nervousness and anticipation bubbling up inside you.

“Well,” Riki said, “I know Heeseung-hyung wanted to talk you before you do anything else.”

You tilted your head. “Heeseung?” You remembered Sunghoon mentioning his name when you were walking up the steps of the Institute with him and Jay. “He’s the head of the Institute, right?”

Riki walked to the door, with you following closely behind him like a puppy nipping at his heels. He smiled over his shoulder when he saw you take a longer stride to catch up, so that the both of you were walking side by side.

“Yep, that’s him,” he replied to your question. “So it’s off to the head’s office we go.”

You nodded firmly.

To be honest, you were rather intrigued about this Heeseung. You didn’t get to hear much about him from Sunghoon or Jay, but they did tell you that he was the youngest ever head of an Institute — and strong, too, even by a Shadowhunter’s standards. You would be lying if you said you weren’t curious to see for yourself what kind of man he was. After all — among people as special as Shadowhunters, their leaders were likely even more so.

“Lead the way,” you said to Riki.

Riki smirked.

“Sure thing, Rookie.”

 . DAY ONE FATE

You didn’t realise it before (you didn’t get a proper look at your surroundings when you were first ushered into the Institute by Jay and Sunghoon), but you were actually quite close to a few other rooms in the hallway. In fact, you were right between two other rooms, which were apparently occupied. Or at least, you assumed as such when you managed to run into someone else after making it only two steps out from your own room.

He was exiting his room — which was to the left of yours — and only just closed his door behind you when he saw you and Riki walking together.

“Oh, what’s this?”

You wondered if being Nephilim, and by extension part-angel, meant inheriting some sort of preternatural attractiveness, because all of the Shdaowhunters you’d met so far were by no means average. And this person was no exception.

His was a cold sort of beauty, somewhat intimidating in its sharpness. And you used the word “beauty” because there was no other way to describe him: while his eyes were sharp, the rest of his features were gentle (plump, pillowy lips; smooth skin, and a fluffy head of hair) in a way that many females — yourself included —would envy.

You were self-conscious in your appearance, but seeing him only made you even more so.

You had to take off your stockings because of the tear in them, leaving you in just your black dress and Jay’s leather jacket (which he had lent you to protect your modesty) which was obviously too big to be yours. You managed to smooth down your hair, but you couldn’t do much about the dried blood attached to your skin without a shower. So while you were significantly better than when Jay and Sunghoon found you, you still looked like a mess. Especially compared to this person, who seemed to be the picture of effortless beauty.

“Sunoo-hyung,” Niki greeted. “What are you up to?”

“I was just leaving to get some snacks,” ‘Sunoo’ replied after giving you a quick glance.

Riki snickered. “Again?” he asked cheekily. “Didn’t you already eat not long ago?”

Sunoo rolled his eyes. You noticed that they were sharper than Riki’s and reminded you of a fox.

“And?” he replied feistily. “What’s it to you? Don’t act like you don’t binge-eat TenTen to grow taller.”

Your head whipped towards Riki, eyes wide in wonder. So that was how he managed to get so tall? You found it hard to believe that he managed to grow to his height with just food.

Riki, noticing your gaze, suddenly became embarrassed, his cheeks and neck becoming tinged pink with warmth. He raised a fist and cleared his throat, before relaxing his face into a stoic expression.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he replied stoically. Before anyone could say anything else, he then turned to you. “This is Sunoo-hyung, by the way. Sunoo-hyung, this is [_____].”

Riki’s words turned Sunoo’s attention to you.

You couldn’t help but fidget under his gaze as he eyed you from head to toe. But it seemed you had nothing to worry about. Because no sooner than he took note of your nervousness, he smiled kindly, his eyes crinkling and softening his image significantly. His aura was so warm and comforting, you subconsciously offered a small smile of your own.

“You must be the girl that Sunghoon-hyung saved,” he said softly. (At the back of your mind, you wondered just how many people have heard of you in the past few hours.) “You poor thing. You must feel so out of depth here.”

You blinked. Were you really that obvious? Or was he just good at reading people? You should have been bothered by the fact that someone managed to see right through you, despite your efforts to hide your awkwardness — and yet, you were honestly comforted. You could hear the genuine sympathy in Sunoo’s tone, which made you feel understood rather than pitied.

“A little bit,” you found yourself admitting with a smile. “But it’s getting better.”

Sunoo hummed and nodded. “That’s good.” He turned to Riki. “Don’t do anything to make her uncomfortable, you hear me?”

“Wha- I- But I didn’t do anything!” Riki protested, whining like a child that was just reprimanded in front of his friends.

You couldn’t help but laugh. Though you didn’t know much about Riki or Sunoo so far, you could tell that they were close from their banter.

“It’s fine,” you said, defending Riki from Sunoo’s scolding look. You lifted your wrist to show the rune that Riki drew for you. “His rune made my wrist a lot better.”

Sunoo chuckled. “Good. He’s supposed to be the best out of all of us at runes. It would be embarrassing if he couldn’t do something as easy as a healing rune.”

You could tell that Sunoo’s subtly hidden praise had gotten to Riki, if the wide smile that crossed his face was any indication. The two of them shared a brief look, smiling at each other in a way that spoke louder than any words. For a moment, you almost forgot about your situation as you were swept up in the warmth of the wholesome atmosphere they created. And when they both turned to you with that same look in their eyes, you felt grateful for almost being eaten by the demon that attacked you — if only because it led you to meeting these two.

“Are you guys parabatai, by any chance?” you said out of nowhere.

Riki smiled, confirming your thoughts. “What gave it away?”

You shrugged. “Just a hunch.”

Sunoo laughed.

“Well, you know what they say about parabatai.”

 . DAY ONE FATE

“There’s a saying about parabatai.”

You turned to face Jay curiously, retracting your attention away from Sunghoon, who walked a few feet in front of you. Unlike Jay, he didn’t seem like much of a talker — or perhaps, he didn’t feel close enough to you to speak freely — so he decided to let Jay deal with answering all your questions about Nephilim.

But from their few interactions alone, you had a feeling that they were close. When you asked Jay about it, he mentioned them being ‘parabatai’. The word you had never heard before — and which you were incredibly curious to know the meaning of.

“They say a parabatai is like the other half of you,” Jay explained. “No matter where you go or how lonely you feel, you’ll always have each other.”

“That sounds like having a soulmate,” you said, wonder apparent in your eyes.

Jay smiled at you.

“It is. A parabatai is your partner for life. We take oaths that we would lay down our lives for each other if we have to, and when we die, we’re buried together,” Jay explained.

“We’re always stronger together, not just because we draw on each other’s power — it’s because you know that you’ll always have someone there to pick you up when you fall. And no matter how much you bicker or fight, you can always trust them with your life and the lives of the people you love.”

He faced forward again, his features softening as his eyes fell on Sunghoon once again.

“Not every Shadowhunter has a parabatai
But if you do, you’ll realise that once you take that oath, you can never imagine your life without them.”

You hummed thoughtfully.

You couldn’t say that you understood the full depth of the parabatai bond. But you did know that it was something beautiful.

“You guys have an amazing bond.”

You turned away, slightly embarrassed when Jay looked at you with eyebrows raised in surprise. You smiled wistfully — perhaps with a feeling of loneliness.

“I’m jealous.”

 . DAY ONE FATE

“You’re jealous?”

You laughed shyly as Sunoo and Riki looked at you. Hopefully, they didn’t think of you as being silly for envying their bond. But how could you not? Who wouldn’t want the assurance of having someone who they knew would always be by their side?

Sunoo smiled kindly. “Well, since you’re Nephilim, there’s a good chance that you might find one of your own.”

You blinked in surprise. “Really?”

You hadn’t really thought about that yet. You only just found out you were Nephilim, after all — and you didn’t even know if you deserved the privilege of having a bond like that, considering you’ve never had to risk your life the same way these boys had to as Shadowhunters. But you had to admit, the idea made your heart flutter.

“But we’ll have to see what Heeseung-hyung says about that first,” Sunoo added thoughtfully.

Riki nodded in agreement. But a few seconds later, he gasped in realisation.

“Fuck, I totally forgot about that!” He turned to you with wide eyes. “Come on — we gotta go! Heeseung-hyung is waiting for us, and I don’t want to be put on probation again!”

Your eyes almost popped out of your sockets. You had also forgotten that you were supposed to meet Heeseung, but your mind was more focused on what Riki had said afterwards.

“‘Probation?’” You asked incredulously. “‘Again?’”

“Not now, Rookie,” Riki said. He grabbed your wrist and tugged you behind him as he sped-walk, forcing you to almost jog in order to keep up with him. “Less questions, more walking.”

“Good luck!” Sunoo shouted from behind you. “Let me know how it goes!”

“Okay!” You and Riki replied in unison.

And then, the two of you disappeared down the hall, leaving Sunoo to laugh and shake his head. As he walked to the kitchen, he had a smile on his face. He recalled how easily you got along with Riki and him after just one conversation — Riki, especially, considering how he let you get a glimpse of his more mischievous side. A side he often kept hidden around people he just met, so he would be taken more seriously and not underestimated for being slightly younger. That alone showed just how naturally it felt to have you there, between the two of them.

You might now know it yourself, but Sunoo could already tell that you would fit in nicely at the Institute. If he was being honest, he was hoping that Heeseung would ask you to stay. The reason? Well, he just liked your company.

And he had a feeling that the others would too.

Sunoo chuckled at the thought.

Now wouldn’t that be interesting?

 . DAY ONE FATE

The thing you noticed about the Institute was that it felt rather prestigious. It had a historic structure, indicating many years of existence, but the inside was furnished in a modern – yet still classically elegant — way that reminded you of five-star hotels for wealthy people. The bottom floor had a living room, dining room and an entertainment area, while upstairs had the bedrooms (including the guest room you currently occupied) — and, apparently, the head’s office.

“Here it is.”

After a few twists and turns (actually, more like too many for you to remember, if you were completely honest), you and Riki found a door with a golden plate on the front reading, ‘Head of Institute’. While you were a bit out of breath from the little run, Riki seemed completely unphased. His face was the image of composure as he knocked on the door. But after the final tap of his knuckles on the wood, he turned to you with a mischievous grin.

“Don’t worry, he’s not scary,” he said, as if sensing the anxiousness rolling off you in waves. “Just don’t do anything I would do.”

You couldn’t help the giggle that escaped you. “So don’t get probated?”

“Hey!” Riki narrowed his eyes at you playfully. Before he could retort, the door opened. You jumped in surprise – only to find that you were face-to-face with a very familiar individual.

Jay smiled kindly. “How’s your wrist?”

You nodded absent-mindedly. “It’s better now, thanks to Riki.”

“That’s good,” Jay said. You smiled at him before peeking over his shoulder to see Sunghoon standing there, his eyes already trained on you. Seeing your curious gaze, Jay chuckled and stepped aside. “Come in, we were waiting for you.”

You straightened up immediately. You didn’t realise there would be more than one person in the room. And while the familiarity of Jay and Sunghoon should put you at ease, you still felt a little daunted. You turned to Riki. Unlike Jay and Sunghoon, you had the chance to bond with him in a somewhat normal way — that is, without the presence of a dead demon in the vicinity. As a result, you found comfort in his presence.

“Are you coming in, too?” you asked, looking up at him with hopeful eyes.

Both Jay and Riki seemed surprised by your question. Riki smiled, pride seemingly rolling off him, before he glanced at Jay, as if silently asking for permission. Jay opened his mouth to respond. But before he could someone else answered for him.

“If that’s what you want.”

Your eyes snapped in the direction of the new voice.

You knew who he was, even without his introduction.

His hair was styled neatly, parted to the side and slicked back – but rather than sophistication, it gave him an air of dominance more than anything. A sense of strength and control radiated from him. His features were well-defined and mature, and despite being a slight bit shorter than Riki, he stood tall.

Just like the other men you met at the Institute so far, he was unfairly attractive. And like Sunghoon said, he was a lot younger than what one would typically expect from someone with a position as high as his.

Without a doubt, this was Heeseung.

He smiled at you, though it was more lop-sided and resembled a smirk more closely.

“You’ve been through a lot tonight, and I want you to be comfortable while you’re here,” Heeseung said. “If you want Riki here with you, that’s more than fine.”

You bit your lip, unsure of how you should answer. Riki didn’t say much, instead looking at you with a curious tilt of his head.

“Are you okay with it?” you asked him.

Riki raised his eyebrows before giving you the boxy grin you had already gotten used to within the very short time of knowing him. “Yeah, sure. Why not?”

Your eyes trailed back to Heeseung, only to find that his eyes were still fixed on you.

“Then
yes, please,” you said timidly, fiddling with the sleeves of Jay’s jacket. “I’d like it if Riki stays here with me.”

Heeseung’s eyes flickered to your hands, causing you to still them. However, he didn’t say anything about your obvious nervousness. Instead he lowered his head and let out a little laugh, before looking back up to meet your eyes.

You weren’t sure if you were seeing things, but you could swear there was a tinge of amusement to the way he looked at you.

“Well, now that we got that over with, why don’t you come inside?”

You hesitated a second, stealing a glance at Riki. Riki raised his eyebrows and winked, before entering the room, allowing you to follow after him — the way you had been since you left your room. You shuffled forward, basically attached to his back, your head lowered as you felt three pairs of eyes follow every movement of your form.

There was a small silence when you and Riki stood in the centre of the room, followed by the sound of Jay shutting the door behind you. Heeseung walked past you, his sleeve brushing against your shoulder as he made his way over to his desk.

Rather than taking a seat at the chair behind his desk, he opted to stand in front of the desk, before leaning his weight back on to it and crossing his long legs in front of him. He put his hands in his pockets, making his posture even more relaxed – and by effect, causing you to relax yours.

“Now, let’s talk about why I called you here.”
