Swakopmund is a beach resort and an example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa. As of the 1970s, German influences remained evident, including German street names, a German daily newspaper, and the German language being spoken by some residents, prompting The New York Times to describe it as "more German than Germany". A 2008 New York Times article describes the town as having "the dislocating feel of a Baltic Sea resort set in the tropics."  

Swakopmund is located in the Namib Desert and boasts to be an adventure centre of Namibia. The town also has plenty of places of interest and sights in and near it as well as offers a lot of tours and adventure activities run by local tour operators.

Swakopmund ist ein Badeort und ein Beispiel deutscher Kolonialarchitektur. Er wurde 1892 als Haupthafen für Deutsch-Südwestafrika gegründet. Ab den 1970er Jahren blieben deutsche Einflüsse offensichtlich, darunter deutsche Straßennamen, eine deutsche Tageszeitung und die von etlichen Einwohnern gesprochene deutsche Sprache, was die New York Times dazu veranlasste, es als "deutscher als Deutschland" zu bezeichnen. Ein Artikel der New York Times aus dem Jahr 2008 beschreibt die Stadt als „das verstörende Gefühl eines Ostseebades in den Tropen“.

Swakopmund liegt in der Namib-Wüste und rühmt sich, ein Abenteuerzentrum Namibias zu sein. Die Stadt hat auch viele interessante Orte und Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Nähe sowie viele Touren und Abenteueraktivitäten, die von lokalen Reiseveranstaltern durchgeführt werden.

In 1855, the British Africa explorer, missionary and adventurer David Livingstone "discovered" the Victoria Falls and was so taken by their beauty that he named them after the British Queen at the time. With the construction of the railway line from Cape Town to Cairo - which was never completed - and the completion of the bridge over the Zambezi in 1905, the first tourists arrived. The following year the legendary Victoria Falls Hotel was built. UNESCO declared the falls a World Heritage Site in 1989.

1855 „entdeckte“ der britische Afrikaforscher, Missionar und Abenteurer David Livingstone die Victoria Fälle und war von deren Schönheit so eingenommen, dass er sie gleich nach der damaligen britischen Königin benannte. Mit dem Bau der Eisenbahnlinie von Kapstadt nach Kairo – die nie fertig gestellt wurde – und der Fertigstellung der Brücke über den Sambesi im Jahr 1905 kamen die ersten Touristen. Im Jahr darauf entstand dann auch das legendäre Victoria Falls Hotel. Die UNESCO erklärte die Wasserfälle 1989 zum Welterbe.

Sesriem is also known for Sesriem Canyon, about 4 km from Sesriem itself, which is the second most important tourist attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. It is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab river in the local sedimentary rock, about one kilometre long and up to 30 metres deep. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means "six thongs", given by settlers on the Dorsland Trek who had to join six rawhide thongs in order for a bucket to reach the water. Sesriem Canyon is only two metres wide in some places, and has a portion that permanently contains water, which many animals use.

Es ist eine natürliche Schlucht, die der Tsauchab-Fluss in das örtliche Sedimentgestein gegraben hat, etwa einen Kilometer lang und bis zu 30 Meter tief. Der Name Sesriem ist Afrikaans und bedeutet "sechs Riemen", gegeben von Siedlern auf dem Dorsland Trek, die sechs Rohleder Riemen verbinden mussten, damit ein Eimer das Wasser erreichen konnte. Der Sesriem Canyon ist an einigen Stellen nur zwei Meter breit und hat einen Bereich, der ständig Wasser enthält, das viele Tiere nutzen.
