I can’t believe someone called tysannoraurus-sex had to say this

PSA about ADD/ADHD because it’s WILDLY misinterpreted

ADD/ADHD is not just an “inability to focus”. We can’t focus because we’re already too focused.

Why?

A normal brain automatically has a feature called Sensory Adaptation. This filters out redundant, repetitive or unnecessary information. Notice how by the end of the day, you’ve forgotten that your socks are on your feet, or your glasses are on your face because you’ve gotten used to the feeling? People with ADD/ADHD can’t naturally do this. We are stuck focusing on hundreds of sensations, smells, tastes, feelings etc for countless hours. We’re unable to filter these things out, and they’re so distracting that it makes it almost impossible to properly focus on anything else.

This is why affected persons often have a repetitive motion (ex. leg bouncing, fidgeting, tapping etc) because not moving feels unnatural. You can imagine why most people with ADD/ADHD often have anger issues as well; imagine constantly being subconsciously aware of thousands of things touching you and happening on and around you all at once, and being physically unable to read a book because of it. It’s frustrating as hell.

People with ADD/ADHD are not stupid. We do not intentionally space out or daydream because we are bored easily. We WANT to learn and be normal. But our brains are physically lacking a type of evolutionary adaptation which allows us to not be constantly uncomfortable in our own skin.

TL;DR- ADD/ADHD is being constantly uncomfortable and not being able to focus due to frustration, not because we’re stupid or spacey.

Washington: Alexander, can you stop being bitchy for five seconds?!

Alexander, confused: Sir, I wasn’t being bitchy.

Jefferson: He meant your personality. *points at the door* leave.
