"You could yell in this woman’s face,”

said Anton, chinning at an elderly passer-by approaching with the help of a wheeled shopping bag.

“She wouldn’t notice. Wouldn’t hear anything.”

“You could spit on her?”

“She’d feel that,” said Callum. “If I time it right, she’ll decide you must have done it.”

At the end of this episode, in response to a missed Act Under Pressure move, I asked the players to describe "an extremely short, extremely stupid car chase" that wouldn't be out of a place in a British black comedy – and what they came up with cracked me up

Anyway here's the stupid car chase from Knives Out, which isn't British but is one of the best:

Now playing in the Main House

Act Two of Four: The owner of the severed arm is in town hoping to witness something earth-shattering.

Coming next on 28 May – Mick, the Mundane Chosen (Vigil Backstage)

Programme notes

This production includes a natural disaster, fantasy violence, blood, and dismemberment (the dismemberment is not bloody).

Nominations are open for the CRIT Awards 2024!

In case you’d like to nominate us but you’re not sure what we’ve done that’s eligible, here’s a post that lists it all, along with any links you’ll need for your nominations.

Dramatis personae and other definitions

Mick Mason: Sherrydown’s favourite builder and bricklayer. His life has been getting weirder since he dug too deep and hit a leyline.

Melody Bantham: The owner of Melodies, the cosy cafe and vinyl shop on Market Street. Melody is an ageless patchwork person animated by music, who fled her creator ages ago and has owned a music shop on this spot ever since.

Brier: A mischievous shapeshifting púca, the fae guardian of Sherrydown’s Rosebrier Forest.

Department of Omissions (DO, DoOm): The UK government department tasked with preventing harm to citizens from supernatural phenomena. Severely defunded under Tory austerity policies and currently prioritising major urban population centres.

Sherrydown, Brackshire: A historic English market town. One of the first towns to lose its DoOm office.

Omission effect: The rejection of certain beings and phenomena by long-term memory. Can be suppressed by concentration, mnemonic techniques, hypnosis, trauma, or the light of the full moon.

I've spent today sitting on a plush sofa and being moved by actors finding meaning I didn't know was there in words I wrote. I've heard flaming hubris in a monologue I thought was sad and tragic. Comedy in a script I thought would make parents of small children cry. I've eaten Krispy Kreme and given one (1) note and that was a brilliant day's work.

And now I'm heading home a couple of pints deep after drinks with the crew (and our final act of the day), where we mooted probably 100 more new projects that are gonna be artistically amazing and make us friends and maybe even money

Sarah Golding (you know Sarah Golding right?) yes that Sarah Golding has a way of drawing all your back burner ideas and ambitions out and making them seem achievable

I Need A Miracle:

Recording day 1

Pulled my usual stunt: gave myself way too much contingency travel time and got to the studio (or the nearest tube, anyway) over an hour early. Currently sitting in a cafe between the tube and the studio consuming black coffees and distracting myself by blogging and by thinking about topics I could speak about that would be useful or interesting to small business owners (an ask from Dad). Oh ever-growing to-do list, you are a boon in times like these of twiddling thumbs and tapping toes.

A photo of a coffee shop interior, showing the wall behind the counter and part of the ceiling. On the ceiling is a plaster ceiling rose with a pattern of oak leaves. There's a lineart mural of coffee growers on the wall, and a row of lamps in front of it hanging straight down on thin black insulated cables.

I like the ceiling roses in this cafe. Wonder what the building was before?

One thing that I love/hate about creating an audio drama is the process that takes you from recording lines to holy shit I made a world. Record lines - "God, I hate this" Editing vocals - "Is this really what I sound like?" Arranging vocals - "The most boring shit I've ever heard" Adding a little audio panning - "Sounds more real-ish, still boring" Adding sound effects - "This might actually maybe sound kinda cool a little" Adding music - "Are we actually gettin' somewhere? Is this really happening?" Finally sitting down in the backyard and sipping whiskey and listening to Desert Skies - "holy shit I made a world"
