Arranged marriages rarely end in mutual happiness. It was no wonder why your own father, a humble baron, had offered you up as a sacrificial lamb on the altar in the figurative and literal sense. He did it to attain the Emperor’s good graces, and bring more wealth to the impoverished lands. Or gamble it all away in the underground casino again. 

Imagine your surprise upon finding out the identity of your chosen husband: the Ashen Empire’s greatest swordsman, Duke Regis Adri Floyen.

Despite knowing he was still devoted to his deceased wife and the mother of his daughter Jubelian, you had naively hoped that you could at least become a friend to him. Punishment for not stooping to your father’s level to gain the Emperor’s favor by trying to control his most trusted soldier. 

Now, here you awakened in your own quarters and not drowning in a pool of your blood. You did not know how or why, but you were almost ten years younger again. You went back to the day when the Emperor announced your engagement to Regis. Jubelian would have been seven by now. 

Have you gone back in time? Are you doomed to suffer in the memories of a loveless marriage through a magic spell? Magic existed in abundance long ago, so it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to consider the possibility that the Emperor had possessed some of it and inflicted its power on the people who have disappointed him. Is it terrible to think that you wanted to keep your distance from Regis and pray that the Emperor found someone else to be his wife? Even when there is no way for you to defy the Emperor’s will as you stood in the cathedral for the second time, dressed in all white?

But if history is doomed to repeat itself, why does Regis’ eyes light up with a glimmer as he watches you walk down the aisle? No. No, it was impossible. There is no way he could be happy with this situation. He didn’t need a wife. He just wanted to be left alone. So, that’s what you will do. 

You will not allow yourself to think of him as nothing more than a friend. You will put Jubelian’s happiness above your own and make sure she will find a good husband who is not Mikhael Hessen. 

In the beginning, Regis will admit that he ignored you. How could he? The Emperor had arranged the marriage to keep a closer eye on him and you were not Amelia. You could never be Amelia, the love of his life and the mother of his child. But you tried. You tried to be a good duchess. You tried to look after Jubelian, yet both of you had died by the Emperor’s machinations. And he would never forgive that bastard, the hypocritical nobles, and everyone else involved in your deaths.

Filled with grief and no will to live anymore, he sacrificed himself for a chance to turn back the hands of time for Jubelian. To start over and make sure his precious daughter did not die again in his arms. To try to actually understand you. 

That is why he had agreed to go through the marriage again. To welcome you as the new duchess and introduce you to his daughter. Her shyness in the past surprised you and made you believe that Jubelian initially hated you, so you refrained from making any kind of contact with her.

Regis felt elated. The two most important women in his life had made a connection. He wasted no time in giving orders for wedding preparations, even though the engagement ceremony occurred only a week ago.
