IT'S SPOOKY MONTH!! HERE'S A SPOOKY SNIPPET FROM SPIRITWALKER
The icy tiles warmed beneath my skin. No more waiting.
I pushed at the wall and the entire section behind the mosaic shuttered. My strange suspicion was correctâthere was a hidden passageway in the tunnelâbut I needed more force to open the door all the way.
I pressed my other hand to the wall and pushed harder, straining the muscles in my back and shoulders. The wall moved inwards this time, rotating like a cog, until it was just a sliver between two gaps. There was enough room for a witch to comfortably walk on either side.
I gestured to Maya. âAre you coming?â
The younger witch, ever loyal, followed me into the pitch black that awaited us. The smell of mold slapped me in the face, and I had to resist the urge to cover my nose in order to keep my grip on the wall. I stretched my foot as far as it would go, trying to gauge how far the passage went, but only felt emptiness. This vast, dark, unknown space should have frightened me, but instead I was struck with a strange familiarity. I had been here beforeâin my dreams.
Once we were both fully inside, I let go of the wall. Considering its weight, I assumed that it would gradually slide back into place. Instead it slammed shut, sealing me and Maya in the mysterious hole. I could hear her hands frantically scraping against the bricks, searching for a way out.
âWhat do we do, Lady Daron?âÂ
âI am sure that Ann Marie will open the door if we stay here for too long. As for the dark, you can leave it to me.â
I slipped my spirit dagger out from its hidden holster with one hand and used the other to locate a wall. When I could feel the solid surface, I stuck the tip of my dagger into the stone. It cut through easily as the brick was so old it chipped and crumbled upon force. Muscle memory took over, carving out the rune spell for light for me.
All of the walls illuminated brilliantly, as if a star was hidden inside of them. Keeping my dagger in my hand, I surveyed my surroundings. The room was smaller than I suspected, only large enough to fit about ten people. Moss and mold grew on the walls and weeds sprouted from cracks in the stone floor. How long had this place been forgotten?
Mayaâs gasp echoed across the walls and I turned to see what startled her. In the corner was what appeared to be a girl, but she had no skin, no color. Her body was solely light, occasionally sparkling with the intensity of her energy. I tightened my grip on my spirit dagger.
âHello,â the spirit said. âI would introduce myself, but I do not know who I am.â

Iâm just âyes andâ-ing you! Yes, kids are addicted to technology and are having behaviorial issues. Yes, we call what they watch cringe. And we should explore why we think itâs cringe because it could lead us to part of the problem instead of shutting that line of thinking down. Sorry if that didnât come off clearly.
i think we should care more about how the parents of gen alpha are giving them technology addiction to the point they throw tantrums when its taken away than how annoying skibidi toilet is
Please donât apologize!! You brought up an important topic and opened up an interesting conversation about technology usage concerning kids. We need this! We need conversation starters on the internet! The things youâre saying are important and I donât think youâre wrong. I just think thereâs more depth to the topic than youâre aware of and thatâs okay! Thatâs good even. Thatâs why we have the option on this app to add on to what people are saying.
I donât know everything about this topic either. I just know what Iâve seen over the past few years working with kids and Iâm really used to discussing something until itâs dead because thatâs all I do as someone who studies English. But also as someone who studies English I know that what you have to say is important and I donât want you to stop sharing your thoughts because this is how we all learn new things.
Iâm being so serious. Do not apologize for speaking ever. Not even if youâre wrong, which you are not right now.
i think we should care more about how the parents of gen alpha are giving them technology addiction to the point they throw tantrums when its taken away than how annoying skibidi toilet is
Iâm just saying that saying kids are addicted to technology ignores a lot of nuance. I get it. I have first hand experience working with first graders with apple watches and ipads. But the problem isnât just technology; the media is part of the addiction.
Itâs completely different to set up an ipad with a schoolhouse rock playlist vs a cocomelon playlist. The cocomelon kid will be the one to throw tantrums because of what it is and how it affects their brains. I can confirm from my own childhood, I never threw a fit over schoolhouse rock. Iâve even tried playing it for kids on my phone. They are completely uniterested. If it was the phone thatâs the problem that wouldnât be the case, but they actually wanted me to put it away!
Calling something cringe absolutely does not ignore the problem. It opens the discussion for why it is cringeâbecause itâs nonsenseâand that opens the discussion of what nonsense can doâkeep kids from learning. And you know what, stunting kidsâ growth is cringe. I wouldnât think skibidi toilet was that much of a problem on its own; itâs the fact that most kidsâ media is like this these days.
Iâm taking a social media class this semester and weâve actually been diving into what makes it so addictive. Because a site like pinterest is not nearly as addictive as tik tok right? (thatâs what the statics say at least. Significantly less time is spent per person per day on average on pinterest). You use technology for both of them, but clearly one type of media is more addictive because of its content and algorithm.
I get what youâre saying and I agree that parents need to parent their kids more, but my point is youâre missing a lot of the conversatiom by shutting down the âcringeâ language. This is about more than âkids are addicted to technologyâ, itâs about how itâs being used thatâs giving kids and adults technology addictions. Technology can actually be helpful to learning of used correctly. I see kids using ipads in class, actually. Thatâs why we need to investigate a little more on what the problem is instead of using broad language.
i think we should care more about how the parents of gen alpha are giving them technology addiction to the point they throw tantrums when its taken away than how annoying skibidi toilet is
Yes but also the discussion around how annoying skibidi toilet is is important! Itâs not just technology that is changing kidsâ behaviors, itâs the media they are consuming. Other than the obvious overstimulation problems we see, media like skibidi toilet is not teaching kids anything, and when your job is to help them with writing you can see they need now more than ever media to teach them language/phonics. Skibidi toilet is the opposite of that.
Also it is annoying when you have to hear it every day.
i think we should care more about how the parents of gen alpha are giving them technology addiction to the point they throw tantrums when its taken away than how annoying skibidi toilet is
Catalina's Playlist
Spotify Link
Description: This playlist consists of mostly folk music and anything I thought sounded earthy because Catalina is a grounded character. There are especially songs about plants because her powers revolve around plants and eating poison. There are also themes of finding yourself and your strength because that is her arc. You will also hear bits about family and protection because Catalina is a momma's girl and takes on a maternal role in her friend group.

Snippet Sunday
look. i tried to make this snip shorter. i really did. but we kind of need all the context for this to make sense. so have all the context! here's Vy and Jules(?) having a super fun conversation in Spark Signature:
cw: possession, self-harm, blood
There was a time when Julesâs apartment felt more like a home than Vyâs own. When theyâd make the drive from the Othello Academy down to Rainier Beach, it was never with the looming dread of having to face people who only cared for them out of obligationâout of love for somebody else. When they went home with Jules, they werenât going home to Erik and Minh; they were going home to no one.
At that time, more than anything else, that was what Vy had needed.
Julesâs apartment now is nothing like home and everything like a cage. And, in spite of Vyâs wishes, itâs anything but empty.
Jules paces the kitchen, running his hands along the countertops, over his arms, through his hair. His voiceâa low, constant murmurâfills the air like haze, clinging to every surface and making Vyâs hair stand on end. He doesnât even seem to hear the door open, doesnât see Vy at all. Not until theyâre standing across the bar from him, a world and an island and a foot-and-a-half away. He blinksâslow, catlike. ââŚVy?â
The surreality, the incongruence, the wrongness of it all dries Vyâs mouth, coats their tongue in sand. But they have to say something, do something. âYou, uh⌠you okay?â
âFine.â He crosses his arms; his hand wraps around the flexed muscle of his biceps and he flinches. A moment of hesitation; he props his hip against the bar instead, tail lashing. âYouâve been out for a long time.â
âJust. You know. Working.â What is wrong with him? Does he know where Vyâs been, that Vy knows? Sure, Vy came back to tell him, to ask him what the fuck he thought he was doing, but thatâd been when Vy thought theyâd have the upper hand, the first shot, not that Jules would be lurking around the apartment, allâ
âYou smell⌠strange.â
Okay, what the actual fuck? âI⌠took the maglev?â
âNo. Strange like blood, strange likeâŚâ His nostrils flare. His wings twitch. Not that nervous twitch, that Jules twitch. This feels⌠preparatory. Predatory. âWhat did you see?â
The answer comes out like thinking, like breathing. They couldnât hold it in if they tried. âYou.â It hangs in the air between them, a ghost of what Vyâd witnessed, what Jules had done. When he says nothing, they continue: âThat personâDr. Pooleâwhat happened? Whatâd you do?â
âNothing.â Itâs not a word; itâs a hiss. A baring of teeth. âNothing they didnât deserve.â
Itâs not him. Itâs not him, but itâs fierce and feral and familiar. Itâs bloodstained lips on a holoscreen, eyes like frozen blood glaring across a pub table.
Vyâs never believed in possession; people, once dead, were content to stay that way. But, before Jules, theyâd never heard of Sparks lingering after separating from their bodies, either.
Jules found the Ether by accident; whoâs to say nobody in the Ether noticed? What would stop someone from using him to hitch a ride back to the material plane?
âJules, if you can hear me?â Vy edges away from the counter, back towards the door. âI need you to come back, now.â
âWhat did you see, exactly?â Not-Jules slinks around the kitchen counter, into striking range. âItâs easy to⌠misinterpret a situation, isnât it?â
âTotally. So easy.â Their combats scuff over the entrywayâs mat. âYou know, thatâs⌠probably it. I just misunderstood. Silly me! Iâll justâŚâ their fingers search for the button, the doorâs interior release, âhead back out. See what else I can find todayââ
âNo. This is more important.â Claws click across the vinyl stone floor. âWe need to clear this up. We wouldnât want the wrong information gettingââ
Vyâs hand finds the button. The door hisses open behind them.
Not-Jules stops. âVy.â They tilt their head, a razorblade smile splitting their lips. âDonât run from me.â
Vy stumbles back, through the door into the hallway. The stairwellâs enclosed; if they go that way, theyâll have nowhere to run. The elevator can be stopped remotely; itâs even worse. They turn and sprint towards the end of the hallâthe fire escape.
âVy!â They glance over their shoulder; Not-Jules stands in the hallway, claws digging into their own forearms. Blood wells in their wake, flowing and glowing and crackling.
Hemomancer. Not-Jules is a hemomancer.
âDonât fucking run from me.â

Would you mind telling me a little bit about Catalina?
LOL I am finishing up her playlist right now. Great timing, friend!
Catalina is my mc, Daron's, best friend (even though it takes Daron the whole book to realize it). She's the daughter of a mistress, which pretty much equates to a duchess, and her mother is also the headmistress of the school all my characters attend. While Daron keeps a professional relationship with her mother and barely interacts with her brother, Catalina contrasts her by being very close with her mother and her little sister. Because of her relationship with her family, she serves as a mother figure in her friend group.
Catalina is an incredibly strong witch, but she has trouble believing it because Kelsee has been out to get her for years. Their families have been fighting for more power in their clan for generations, but Catalina's mother was over it and decided to run a school instead. Kelsee saw this as a bid for power and bullied Catalina into doubting herself and made their classmates believe it too, but don't worry, Catalina realizes her strength.
From the start of my writing, I intended for Catalina to have ambitions other than succeeding her mother as mistress--she thinks she suits a smaller lifestyle better--but I just added in an arc for her recently where she is put in a leadership position and learns that she is good at it. In the end, she decided she really does want to be mistress and lead with Daron, who has one of the highest positions of power in their country.
Catalina's the kind of person who always knows what to say so I gave her some of the best dialogue. A friend once told me that I have a kind smile, and I thought that was the nicest thing anyone's said to me so I wanted to immortalize it. In my first draft, Catalina already had a similar line so of course I gave it to her to say to Daron. She also says this line that was rated the best line in my wip from a poll I made: "We cannot be perfect. We can only be better."
Like other witches of the Herbneivorous Clan, Catalina's powers include being able to grow plants, tell their properties by touching them, and being able to eat poison. She's eaten so much that her blood's actually poisonous, but it's not much of a threat because she's typically calm and grounded.
Thanks for asking! That's Catalina.

the real question is, why do i spend more time making playlists for my characters than actually writing about them?
i love in fantasy when its like âking galamir the mighty golden eagle and his most trusted advisor who would never betray him, gruelworm bloodeye the treacherousâ
This far into my draft I can really see Daronâs character development. Iâm so proud of my baby girl. Look!
Chapter one Daron
Something sweet rose up from my chest but I promptly tamped it back down.
I did not take even a single glance back at the black-brick mansion. My path had already been laid out, and it led away from Spiritwalker Mansion. I would not be able to keep moving forward if my head was turned back, even for a second.
Daron now
âHow are you?â I searched Catalinaâs foresty eyes and found no judgment; none of the expectation for apathy that I was used to. I only saw compassion. It broke me further. âIt hurts.â âI know.â Catalina gently moved my head so it rested on her shoulderâŚand I let her.
Two rules for creating anything.
1) Make it weird.
2) Make it with love.
my friends r so talented. rb if ur friends are talented
Writing Advice
You don't need to feel guilty when something prevents you from writing. It's okay to find it frustrating, angering, or sad. Sometimes different kinds of grief can put creativity on hold and other times they fuel it. The most important thing is remembering that you will find your way back to writing when it's possible for you.
Benefits of being a writer:
â Story goes how YOU want, nearly 21% of the time
â can buy a new book for 'work'
â excuse for all those blank notebooks you have
â search history doesn't send up any red flags
Downsides:
X You have to actually write a book
"how did you forget XYZ?!" I didn't, I didn't include it because it would wreck the curve. If you think one was left off in error, pick one of the provided choices and then leave your suggestion in the tags
I do not consider any fantasy worldbuilding complete before you cannot tell me something about
the cultureâs sense of humour, with examples of popular jokes,
popular literature VS classic literature,
what children learn in school (especially history, maths, biology),
the common grammar mistakes your conlangâs native speakers make,
the cultureâs cuisine, with recipes,
toy production,
the embarassing old songs people sing when they are really drunk, but would not admit knowing while sober.
I really go to work every day and teach kids to ask before using things that donât belong to them just to come home and see my adult roommates use my dishes without asking

â ď¸âĽď¸ Unsuited âŚď¸âŁď¸
The Game for the Unsuited has officially reopened - and Alana Hargreaves, a girl with no proficiency in any of the four Suits of magic, is the first of the chosen Pawns.
She has a plan to win the Game without playing by the rules; anyone who had ever won before had gotten in, gone a bit insane thanks to the Game's mysterious challenges, developed Sanity magic, and gotten out. But if everything goes according to plan, Alana - and her best friend, Penn, who was chosen for the Game the year before - will learn a different Suit of magic and, once no longer Unsuited, be allowed to go back home.
But as Alana realizes upon entering the Game's giant forcefield, there are two problems with her plan:
One, Unsuited Pawns aren't the only ones playing - in fact, the Game is practically ruled by a Queen of Hearts Mage, and she doesn't want any of her victims to leave.
Two, Penn has almost lost her mind already, but Sanity wouldn't be her first Suit of magic; she now wields the legendary, reality-altering Suit of Creativity.
As Alana investigates Penn's strange new abilities and befriends other residents of the Game - including the Queen of Hearts' messenger brother, Ace, and Charlie, the Game's built-in AI assistant whose origins are somewhat murky - she discovers that the reason for the Game is darker than anyone would have guessed, and that to make it out alive she'll need more than her sanity...but will she fight her way out, or give in and give up her mind in the process?
đŠ¸đť Destined for Death đłď¸âď¸
Nicholas Acker is a ghostâand a special one, because not every ghost can say they were killed by their best friendâŚwho also happens to be a half-vampire-half-bloodwielder.
Jameson, said best friend, feels terrible for accidentally killing Nickâespecially considering that he just got engaged.
So Jamie does what any decent gentleman would do: set out to kill Nickâs fiancee so they can be together in the afterlife.
But when Jamieâs undercover-vampire-hunter twin shows up at Nickâs funeral, bringing with him a whole new set of complications, and Nick runs into a teenage ghost with dreams of curing vampirism, they all have to team up to save themselvesâand all vampires with hope of becoming human again.

Jameson, said best friend, feels terrible for accidentally killing Nickâespecially considering that he just got engaged.
