What’s your opinion on the enemies to lovers/rivals to lovers trope in YA and NA? (Where it’s more equal/tit for tat and not just a girl forgiving an asshole for one sided misdeeds). Inspired by your legendborn/sel responses :)

I’m not the biggest fan of enemies to lovers, but I think that’s more because of how it’s usually written—which is what you said about a girl forgiving an asshole—and and not the actual trope. I love the idea of the emotional growth it takes to learn to be a better person and fall in love with someone you hate, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in full.

What I really don’t like is that the characters are clearly attracted to each other from the start and there’s usually some revelation that the MMC never intended to hurt the FFC. The attraction thing doesn’t even make sense. Maybe it’s because I’m awkward around most people but I would not be fantasizing about someone I think is trying to kill me. I will admit that makes Legendborn more of an actual enemies to lovers than other books with this trope but I still don’t like what Deonn did lol.

I think the problem is that it’s hard to understand and convey the emotional growth enemies to lovers needs, and it’s much easier to make the characters attracted to each other from the start.

So yeah, I like the idea of enemies to lovers, but not the execution.

what led you to create it?

I saw other writeblrs and wanted to show off my writing too.

what’s your favourite thing about the writeblr community?

The games. It’s a fun way to connect with other writers.

what’s one thing you’d like your mutuals to know about you?

I’m not just into writing. I also love science!

is there anything you’d like to see more of on your dash?

Idk. I think my dash is great right now. I have a mix of a lot of things I like.

which wips or writing projects are you noodling about, lately?

Spiritwalker. Tbh I don’t even remember when I last worked on We Faceless Folk. I do have another idea…but I want to finish my current projects first.

how long have you been working on them?

I’ve been working on Spiritwalker for 3 years and We Faceless Folk for 1 year.

do you remember what inspired them/what got you started?

Yes! Spiritwalker was inspired by Kendara Blake’s Three Dark Crowns series and We Faceless Folk was inspired by a mix of one of Rotten Mango’s true crime podcasts, Going Dark by Melissa De La Cruz, and our sucky world in general.

how much time, in your best estimation, do you spend thinking about them?

Literally all day.

when someone asks the dreaded, “what do you write about,” question, what do you usually say?

Fantasy. It’s not all I work on, but it’s what I started with and what has my heart so that’s what I say.

Ok, my main characters are Daron Spiritwalker, Maya Wisp, Catalina Hemlock, Aria Fang, Cassidy Tempress, and Naomi Lunaire. Some of my favorite side characters are Iris Arsonite, Amiliana Hemlock, Rosemary Nightshade, and Leon Starling.

who’s the most unhinged?

Maya. One of my favorite things to write is how unhinged she is. She once asked Daron to break her hand just for touching her.

who comes the most naturally for you to write?

Cassidy. I always say I ran out of character traits by the time I got to her so I modeled her after me.

do you ever cringe at them?

Yes.

how much control do you feel you have over your characters? do they ever “write themselves,” refuse to cooperate, or do things you didn’t expect? to what degree? are some less cooperative than others?

During my first draft I had complete control, but in the second draft I lost it. I think it’s so funny though because it’s like some of my characters were so upset at my failed attempts to get them right that they just took the keyboard from my hands and started writing themselves.

what makes you want to follow another writeblr account? do you follow ‘em as you see ‘em, or take time scoping out the blog to make sure you align with its content? do you follow based on wips, or vibes?

Sometimes I follow just to follow. Sometimes it’s because we have similar interests. Depends on my mood.

what makes you decide against following?

Idk I just feel sometimes that no one wants me to interact with them.

do you interact with non-mutuals often?

Not really. I don’t want to seem like a weird stranger randomly liking and reblogging from people who don’t know me.

do your mutuals’ characters occupy space in your noodle?

Some. There’s so many it’s hard for me to keep track lol

Wow, I did not expect the results to be so split! It’s amazing to me that 4 of my girls got the same number of votes. I was so sure Aria would win too.

I kinda expectated Daron to be the least favorite, despite her being my main character. I’ve been reflecting lately on comments I got about her from other writers, and I think she’s really misunderstood. Since she lost, here’s some more about her.

Daron is supposed to come off as perfect, but with something slightly off about her. Other witches practically worship her. She’s talented, patient, and elegant. Daron even sees herself as perfect, but she has a different definition of it. Her clan deals with life and death on a daily basis, and on top of that, she is their future leader. Their standards are to be emotionally reclusive, put the needs of spirits before themselves, and to uphold a system that subjugates some of them to serve witches in power like Daron. She exceeds in these standards more than most. Especially as a lady, she puts the needs of spirits and her whole clan before her own. She is in so deep she doesn’t even register her needs.

Because of this, Daron is a really hard character to write, especially as this is my first wip. Instead of displaying her personality through emotions, I mostly show it through her speech patterns. Daron is used to being a leader, so she doesn't ask people to do things. She tells them, no matter who she is talking to. She isn't trying to be malicious; it's just her upbringing. Other times, someone will thank Daron, and instead of saying "you're welcome", she will say that she is doing her duty or serving her purpose. It is so natural for her to help other people that she sees it as something she is meant to do rather than an act of kindness.

Obviously we can see how wrong a lot of this is, but Daron can’t until she is exposed to witches from other clans. It's like how fish don't know they're in water because they're surrounded by it their whole lives. Daron's arc is unlearning what she knows so she can be a better leader, and learn how to be a friend along the way.

The irony of Daron is that her strife for perfection is what causes her flaws. In the beginning, she seems so perfect that she is an idol figure. Closer to the end, when we really begin to know her and her cognitive dissonance begins to set in, her flaws grow so apparent that they manifest when she accidentally scars herself. In trying to do what she is best at, she is left with permanent reminder—right where she can always see—that she will never be perfect.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from her. It's her response to Naomi saying she is kind.

“I prefer to think I am just. . .Just people can be kind or unkind depending on what is needed.”

I like this spin, because the last time I did this was almost like a vague guessing. Now that more of you know my OCs you’ll probably be able to figure out the ships pretty quickly 😂

1. An abductor takes an abductee on a forced adventure. This happens with THREE of my ships ⛵️⛵️⛵️. One on the high seas, one in high fantasy, and one in the high vacuums of space.

2. “And they were roommates”—ships where the main cast, in some capacity, live together in a somewhat normal slice-of-life setting. This happens with 2 (eventually 3) of my ships ⛵️⛵️⛵️

3. An overprotective OC nearly martyrs themself for their love interest. This happens with ALL SIX of my known ships ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️

Thanks for asking! I have to admit…I’m pretty weak. I’ve never fought anyone either, but I have no doubt I can take Naomi (at least before her training arc). She’s even weaker than me, both physically and magically, and wouldn’t want to fight in the first place. I could blow air in her direction and win.

I might be able to take Cassidy too. Her strength is her aim, but I’m not letting her have her bow. She refuses to use her powers because using them too much will kill her, so that makes us more equal. Cassidy is based off me though so who knows.
