Writing Tropes - Tumblr Posts
"I love asshole characters" bitches when the character is actually an asshole and isn't a "misunderstood bad boy with a soft side that can only be seen by them":

controversial choices, I know
thank youuuuu @actual-gremlin for the tag!!!

that trope where a character doesnt want romance until they find ~the one~ but reverse it. give me a character that centers their life around finding a partner until they realize that amatonormativity is bullshit

vermin of tumblr, id like to hear some of your favourite tropes, in a very not normal way. although cliche tropes are also acceptable
more stuff about becoming a god being inherently dehumanizing pls
patience is such a compelling dynamic in relationships sorryyy it’s the peak of romance to me
I think people misunderstand "x fell first, y fell harder " trope because it's not about like the one who fell harder loves the other person harder. It's just that the one who fell first falls in a graceful way, one step at the time, maybe gradually over a span of time. The one who fell harder smashes trough the air, there's blood everywhere, everything is fine-
I have read fanfics I would pay to have bound into books and keep them on my bedside table.
reblog if you’ve read fanfictions that are more professional, better written than some actual novels. I’m trying to see something
love the classic damsel in distress trope, but the damsel in question is a pathetic fictional man bleeding out in the dark somewhere on the floor before his ridiculously gorgeous knight comes for his rescue just when he’s about to pass out, and the ridiculously gorgeous knight in question is actually a deranged villain who is his archenemy. but they both have these frustratingly unresolved sexual tension going on where they both hate each other but are also super possessive and protective of each other in the sense that no one else can hurt this little guy but me!!!! and so the knight carries his pathetic damsel in his arms bridal style back to his goth castle where they have hot, kinky gay sex ever after (after he nurses his pathetic enemy’s ass back to health, of course, can’t risk bruising our fragile damsel when he’s already half dead).
I love you misunderstood villain who’s been through the worst kind of hell and wasn’t able to come out of it unscarred.
I love you villain who is well understood and just likes doing bad things for pure pleasure.
I love you villain who is loved by the fandom.
I love you villain who is hated by the fandom.
I love you villain who has to cry alone and lick their wounds in the dark because they’re too scared to let anybody see them vulnerable.
I love you villain who’s not scared to shout all their pain and trauma at the top of their lungs for the world to hear.
I love you villain who’s on their knees begging to be accepted and loved for once.
I love you villain who never bows down to anyone.
I love you villain who hides their scars like their deep, dark secrets.
I love you villain who shows their scars like trophies from the battles they won.
I love you villain who wants to create a better world, even if their way of trying to achieve the goal is different than hero’s.
I love you villain who wants to burn the world down.
I don’t do that Anti Shit in my house

You are right about that

I’ve been guilty of writing the last trope, a lot.
my FAVORITE tropes compiled thanks to some suggestions from others
a character gets a sick burn and doesn’t realize it immediately, at some point later there’s just “HEY WAIT A MINUTE”
the double take. this one’s an oldie but a goodie
the injured character makes the killing shot that saves everyone else in a dangerous situation
a character who isn’t speaking is doing something weird in the background, it’s subtle and never acknowledged it’s just there for those who notice it (pulling another character out of something they got stuck in, making a huge sandwich, etc)
the beleaguered assistant inches away from smacking their boss
“quick act natural”
in that vein, the leader character was just in a shouting match with someone and when they come back the rest of the team scrambles to look like they weren’t listening at the door
never forget: “he’s standing right behind me isn’t he”

I understand the idea of "elements" like Fire, Water, Air, and Earth seem quite overused in media, but I still think using elemental power in writing can be extremely creative depending on how you go about it.
I personally use elemental power inside my universe as a way to highlight the role of fandom in its art and the writing process itself, as well as important attributes of communication with the world around you. It's a very important aspect of my world building that took me over a year to polish and only then everything else finally started to feel consistent.
It all depends on what you think is best for what you're doing and the role you best fit inside of it. As a world builder by heart, I started there, and now I'm learning to do the rest.
reblog if you believe fanfic writers are as valid and talented as any professional writer who publishes and sells their novels
I’m trying to prove a point
“For a long time after, I’d just burst into tears if anyone even touched me. Sometimes it’s like that when somebody touches you and you haven’t been touched in a long time.”
— Sandra Cisneros, Caramelo
"yes i know having villains and/or morally grey characters in a story is important – nay, crucial — but I think this character is too *lists the qualities and traits of a villain/morally grey character* and anyone who likes this character should seek help immediately!!!"
