andre constantly tells cal to sit on the left side of him, getting annoyed when their hands bump when they’re eating or doing school work. sometimes cal forgets or purposefully sits on the wrong side and ends up knocking food off andre’s fork or hitting his arm and messing up his writing.

cal complains about how desks and other trivial things aren’t made for him. andre just tells him to shut up and jokingly calls him freakish. he loves telling cal random facts about left handed people, especially how they were accused of devil worship and persecuted in olden days. cal doesn’t even listen to him anymore.

there is one thing about their differing dominant hands that the boys both love, though.

they’re able to hold hands easily; andre on the left and cal on the right. their fingers intertwine like they were made for one another. there’s an awkward fumble to hold hands while andre’s driving, but they always figure it out.

when they sleep in the same bed, they fall asleep holding hands. when they go to the movies, they hold hands. (always closer to the end of the movie, though. cal has to eat popcorn first.) when they’re talking and having game night with family, andre’s hand sneaks under the table and holds the hand of the boy sitting next to him. cal is quick to return the gesture, squeezing andre’s hand tightly.

that’s the andre i know and love

the kriegman’s travel to germany as much as they can. most trips are just mr and mrs kriegman, but trips during the summer and over christmas break are able to include their two boys.

andre is always thrilled about these trips. he can’t sleep on the plane and is always tapping his fingers or fiddling with the straps of his backpack. having barely any leg room doesn’t bother him. nothing could bother him. he’s so happy to see family and just spend time in germany.

when they land and come out of the terminal, andre runs to hug his cousins and grandparents. he almost knocks over his grandfather when he sees him, enveloping him in the biggest bear hug known to man.

andre feels at home. he’s speaking in german, and everyone understands him. it’s not like connecticut where everyone makes fun of him for speaking in germanz (some kids even call him a nazi which makes absolutely no sense.)

he misses cal; he always misses cal. there’s happiness here though. he knows he’ll spend almost every hour with cal when he returns home, but for now, he’s fine with just calling. his family is here.

andre is a chronic nail biter. he gnaws on the tips of his fingers until he sees blood. he brings bandaids in his backpack and his car. there’s always at least one finger that is wrapped up.

cal has always wanted to stop him but could never figure out how. one day, when the boys were driving around to clear their heads, andre began biting his nails for the millionth time. without thinking, cal grabbed onto his hand and intertwined their fingers.

they both stayed silent for a moment, and cal wondered why he did that and if he fucked something up. after a few seconds, andre squeezed cal’s hand in acknowledgment.

now, whenever cal sees andre biting his nails, he grabs onto his hand and holds it tight. he often draws on andre’s hand or taps random rhythms on his palm. it helps andre a lot.
