every summer cal’s family goes camping (literally shown in the movie) but sometimes andre comes along. one time he and cal snuck off to the lake at night and swam together. they laid on the dock for a while, swatting away bugs and dodging any of them that got too close. the last time they jumped in the water, they found each other before coming back up. they held onto each other and came to the surface in each other’s embrace.

their legs kicked together, keeping them above water, but neither of them minded. any bruises they got on their shins would be worth it. the cold water meant nothing as their bodies were fire and their touch was fuel.

as the sun rose, painting the sky in warm hues, andre and cal got out of the water. their way back to their tent was fueled with laughter when one of the boys tripped and hisses when they stepped on rocks. their tired muscles and minds were absolutely worth it; that night would stay in their minds forever.

andre 10000% talks in his sleep. in between soft snores, he’ll mutter random words. no one really pointed it out until he had his first sleepover with cal who wouldn’t let him forget about it after. slowly, cal becomes used to the boy beside him saying random things, some even unintelligible. on certain nights, cal will try to have a conversation with him only to receive whispered words and small grunts. a couple of the tapes include these late night conversations, but cal decides that andre doesn’t need to know that.

has anyone else noticed a parallel between the home videos at the start of zero day and the security footage at the end of the movie?

cal is shown sitting at a table on his birthday. he’s being sung to, cheered on, and supported, but he stays still and stoic as if he doesn’t feel anything. he has everyone’s eyes on him, yet he doesn’t seem to care.

on the other hand, andre is playing around with who i would guess is his older brother and some of his friends before being shown dancing on an exercise bike. he is enjoying life. he is experiencing emotion.

this is repeated in the security footage. cal has no feelings, and andre has too many. cal yells at his peers with his gun in their faces while andre stays silent, thinking about what he is doing and second guessing the plan at the very end.

zero day is almost nothing to cal, just a way to end his life memorably and take out as many people as he can with him. zero day is everything to andre. it is a way for him to get back at people, to express his emotions even if they are anger and frustration.
