“i felt that five had to have a love story” okay steve !! fine. i’ll humour you. picture this : lila and five in the subway. they’re travelling to different timelines, loosing hope, trying to find a way home. then they get to a timeline and five sees dolores. but she’s a human, not a mannequin. he falls for her. loves her. wants to stay with her in her timeline. and that’s why lila has to force him to come home. she has kids, a husband, a life. five wants to stay with dolores more than anything. but he goes home, back to his timeline, because he knows he has to save his family. because he loves them more.

i love rewatching the umbrella academy because i notice new things every time. for example, Diego had quite the bad attitude episode one. he was really just trying to pick fights with people all the time. it’s strange, because he’s one of my favorite characters now and i guess he must have changed over the course of the seasons.

another thing i noticed: five and viktor had a really good relationship from the beginning. in episode 2 when it shows young five arguing with reginald about time travel, he kind of looks to viktor for what im assuming is guidance? of course, he doesn’t listen. but still. also, when he jumps forward and sees the post-apocalyptic world, the first name he calls is vanya, and he also tells viktor about the apocalypse before any of the other siblings

I think a better ending and message of The Umbrella Academy should have been that Five doesn't tell the others what he learns in the subway and about breaking the timeline, but instead he simply lives with his family, endlessly saving and trying to save the world. To live despite how dark it is and how hopeless it is.

To live in spite of hardship. To live and spit in the face of how hard and bleak it is.

To say, 'I lived' in spite of it all.

That should have been the message at the end.
