The HotD writers made the same mistake D&D did: they thought their fanfiction is better than George’s work. Any chance for this show to be actually good was ruined by this massive flaw, George wrote morally grey and questionable characters. Ryan Condal & Co. on the other hand kept shoving their “everything is solely black and white” narrative down our throats. Thus leaving the audience stumped as to why anyone would prefer a child abusing rapist as King over a woman who so far has done nothing nearly as evil.

I honestly can’t think of a single change the show made that was better than what was originally written in the book.

Honestly, that's what I think of House of the Dragon at this point, it's just fanfiction. Especially cause some things completely go against things that explicitly happen in the book (ex. Daemon killing Rhea would have been impossible in the book). But yeah definitely agree with you.

I don’t think so at all, they’ve been whitewashing Team Black the minute they cast 19 year old Milly Alcock so no one clocks just how disgusting Daemyra is. Do you think the ship would be as popular if we watched 41 year old Matt Smith groom an 8 year old?

Moreover they made Aegon II the love child of Joffrey Baratheon and Ramsay Snow, thus destroying any chance for neutrality. The Dance is now between a rapist who runs child fighting rings vs. a woman whose flaws were deliberately ignored in the show.

Any chance for nuance is coming solely from a fan perspective, the writers have the subtlety of a reversing dump truck. There’s nothing neutral in their Team Black = heroes and Team Green = villains writing.

In the beginning stages of the show, yeah I believe they wanted to be neutral. When they were writing the show, they made the choice to give positive characteristics like Alicent who in the book is your stereotypical evil stepmother. I think it's small things like that which show they wanted to do but this isn't Game of Thrones where the books are fully written with fully established dialogue, setting, characters, etc. Fire and Blood has conflicting reports on characters and most events are briefly described in a paragraph. GOT was easier to adapt cause they basically got a finished script in the existing books, Fire and Blood not so much. I imagine they wanted to be as compelling as GOT but with too many "blanks" in the original text, they realized they would have to write out said morally grey characters, which isn't always easy. So I think they gave up and went with the easy route of heroes vs villains. Hope this makes sense :)
