The shifting flashes of red and blue police lights in his rearview mirror yanked Rowan from his half-unconscious stupor back into reality. The siren caught up with him seconds later, piercing through the fog of intoxication clouding his senses. Fuck, how much had he drunk? How many empty bottles littered the floor of his kitchen?Â
Hadnât he sworn, months ago, to lock the alcohol away? Hadnât he promised someone he loved more than life itself that he would stop drinking to forget?
Even though he had, that someone had broken him so badly heâd gone for the liquor cabinet, grabbed bottles at random, and poured the alcohol down his throat until the burn faded into numbness and the agony of the evening faded into the liquor-induced fog. Then heâd climbed into his pickup and leftâhe had to get the fuck away, clear his head. Part of him wouldnât care if he drunk-drove himself off the side of the road, if he crashed and burned and died a nameless drunk.Â
Guided by the police cruiser behind him, Rowan pulled off to the side of the road and stopped, keeping his hands on the wheel. A police officer got out of the cruiser and walked up to his door.
âOpen the door, son.â The officerâs deep, calm voice was familiar, even through the haze of alcohol and anguish blurring his mind.Â
Blearily, Rowan threw his pickup into park, set the parking brake, unlocked his door, and opened it. âHave my li-licenshâ here, sir,â he slurred.Â
âRowa, I donât need your license.â Ah fuck, just what he neededâRhoe Galathynius finding his daughterâs boyfriendâex-boyfriend nowâdrunk driving down Main to get the hell out of town after a breakup that shattered both of them into a thousand tiny shards.Â
âSh-sir?â Rowan was confused.Â
âYouâre drunk, Rowan.â Rhoeâs voice remained infinitely patient. âI have to take you in for the night, son.âÂ
Son. The endearment stabbed a barbed spear straight through the raw ruins of Rowanâs heart. Groggily, he shut off his engine, stepped out of the truck, and would have fallen on his face if Rhoe hadnât caught him.Â
âHere.â Rhoe steadied him. âCome on, son. Itâs just for the night; youâll be able to go home once youâve sobered up.â Holding open the back door of the cruiser, he nudged Rowan inside. âYou get one emergency call.âÂ
âAelin!â Rowan blurted.
âWhat?âÂ
âAelin,â he repeated, hoarsely. âMy call.âÂ
Unidentifiable emotions flashed across Rhoeâs fatherly face. âOkay.â He handed Rowan his phone. âGo ahead.âÂ
Rowan tapped Aelinâs icon, heard her ringtone start to sound, and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited.Â
âTh-this is Aelin.â Her voiceâraw, rough, and creaky the way it was after sheâd been sobbingâcrackled through the phone.Â
âFireheart?â Rowan choked out.Â
Click. Beep.Â
She hung up.Â
Blindly, Rowan grabbed for his phone, but Rhoe held it out of his drunken reach. âIâm sorry, son.âÂ
âPlease,â Rowan begged, tears spilling out of his eyes. âLeâmme try again, sir, fuck, I swear Iâll cooperate.â His voice broke. âSheâIâI needâsheâll call back, I swear.âÂ
Grief and empathy shone in Rhoeâs kind eyes. âI canât. Iâm sorry, son.âÂ
âFuck!â Rowan buried his head in his hands. âPlease!â
Rhoeâs strong hand rested on the younger manâs shoulder. âWhy do you want to do this to yourself?â he asked, gently. Rowan could hear the muted pain in the older manâs words, the deep love Rhoe had for his daughter and for the man she loved, and he knew how much it must tear the man up to arrest his daughterâs boyfriend for drunk driving and then end up going home to a broken, emotionally bleeding version of his daughter.Â
âSâdone,â Rowan slurred, his vision blurring so badly he just wanted to close his eyes and sleep until the pounding in his head went away.Â
Rhoe let out a soft sigh. âStay here, son.â He left the back door open, stepped aside, and spoke to his patrol partner in a low voice for a few minutes. When he returned, he helped Rowan out of the cruiser instead of closing the door and heading off to the jail like Rowan thought heâd do. âIâm going to need your keys, son.âÂ
Rowan blinked. âHuh?âÂ
âYour keys.â Rhoe held out his hand, huffing out a short breath at Rowanâs complete confusion. âIâm going to drive you home in your truck, son, but Iâll need your keys to drive.âÂ
âOh.â Fumbling a little, Rowan handed over his keys. Rhoe unlocked the pickup, helped Rowan up into the passenger side, buckled his seatbelt, closed the door, and went around to the driverâs side. A moment later, they were back on the road, headed towards Rowanâs house. âSir?âÂ
âHmm?â Rhoe glanced towards him, his face illuminated in the amber wash of the traffic lights.Â
âI-Iâm sorry.â Rowan closed his eyes and sank back into the passenger seat. âIâm so sorry.âÂ
Rhoe was quiet for a long few moments. âLock the cabinet back up, son,â he finally said. âIt wonât do anything good for you.â He reached Rowanâs house, pulled into his driveway, parked, helped Rowan out of his truck, and walked him into his house. âSon.âÂ
âYeah?âÂ
Rhoe pressed Rowan into a brief, tight hug. âDonât beat yourself up too badly.â He closed the front door, leaving Rowan alone in his house once again.Â
Rowan made it into the kitchen, shuffling slowly with his hand on the wall to guide him and keep himself upright, and swore at the sight of the bottles on the counter and the floor. So many. Maybe that was partially because of his hazy vision, but stillâso many.Â
He left the kitchen. Heâd deal with that messâŠlater. Right now, he needed sleep.Â
He only made it as far as the living room couch before his legs buckled and he half-collapsed onto the couch, barely remembering to kick off his shoes before he flopped down on his side, closed his eyes, and tumbled into the sweet black oblivion of drunken sleep.Â
The last thing he saw before deep sleep claimed him was Aelinâs heartbreakingly beautiful face, her stunning eyes lined with tears, her soft, broken plea for him to âjust leaveâ spilling from her lips.Â

More Posts from Sarahjswift
I think the spicy scenes are somehow part of their story, how their connection grows from physical intimacy to emotional intimacy
I love seeing posts from people being worried about how spicy the rwrb movie will be because the book was "so explicit"... meanwhile I listened to most of the book as an audio book during my breaks in uni or on public transport while keeping a straight face all the time... It doesn't seem that explicit to me but I don't know if it is just because of all the fanfiction I've read đđđ
AS YOU SHOULD HENRY
Henry: texts Alex first, storms out of the New Yearâs Party after he sees Nora and Alex kiss, tells Alex he wished he could be more free to date who he wants, stares at Alex when he talks about the people heâs interested in
Alex: I have no idea what youâre talking about
Henry:

My heart â„ïž
Still a little hesitant about the movie but this is truly Alex and Henry

Nick thinks Taylor is so funny and I just think thatâs neat đ„č
