I'd Like To Approach This Topic As, Not Only An Autistic Person, But Also As A Self Advocate Who Sees
I'd like to approach this topic as, not only an autistic person, but also as a self advocate who sees a lot of what goes on in the autistic community.
Lower intelligence often goes hand in hand with being seen as lesser. You're less of a person, less worthy of things like bodily autonomy, rights and respect. I think the push to prove that Wrecker is intelligent is the fanbase going "Wrecker has value! Wrecker deserves love and respect!"
Well yeah, but even if he wasn't intelligent he'd still have value and would be deserving of love and respect. Sadly we as humans still haven't moved past the idea that being stupid is some sort of green light to dehumanize someone. "Oh, you're not smart? Well then, you aren't deserving of being treated like a human being."
Even if Wrecker was just all brawn with no brains I think he'd still have value as a character. He'd still be the same caring and supportive person we all know and love. He'd still be him.
While I see what people are doing with posts about how Wrecker is intelligent (I've shared plenty of them myself) we need to stop equating intelligence with value. Of course a lot of those posts are responses to reading some post or fanfic where Wrecker was written as a complete buffoon whose only reason for existence is to be laughed at. Again, seeing a lack of intelligence as a green light to dehumanize. Dance monkey, dance. I'd get upset too. So people try to counteract those views of Wrecker with the view that he's actually very intelligent and doesn't deserve to be laughed at.
Except a person doesn't need to be intelligent to not be laughed at.
Is Wrecker intelligent? I believe he is in his own way. A way that isn't as valued as it should be. But even if he wasn't he still deserves to be valued as a beloved character.
Sorry if this got way more serious than expected. It just set something off in my brain.
This Wrecker Wednesday I’d like to address the question: “would it be so bad if Wrecker wasn’t intelligent/was stupid?”
The thing is CANONICALLY he isn’t. He rewires a canon from a tank to make it a “gun” that he is able to carry and shoot. He works (successfully) with explosives on screen.
He may not be the most observant or focused. But he makes connections quickly once his attention is drawn.
Making Wrecker not intelligent is mischaracterization.

Wrecker deserves a round of applause for always facing down his fear of heights in order to help his squad. 👏❤️🥹👏
He's a soldier so of course it's "expected," yet he still not only lives up to but often goes beyond what is expected of him in spite of his fear, all for the sake of his siblings, and I just love him for it! ❤️❤️❤️
Just a few moments (not an exhaustive list):

^This will always be my top favorite moment, from "On the Wings of Keeradaks," when Wrecker dodges around Tech and jumps off the connecting strut to save Crosshair who is falling. 👏👏👏

^"Decommissioned," when Wrecker not only takes the lookout role but then swings across an open chasm to help reboot the system.

^"Battle Scars" - not only does Wrecker face his fear of heights, but he does so in order to undergo a surgery he very clearly is apprehensive about.

^"Infested," when Wrecker rappels into a deep cavern swarming with irlings to help Cid retrieve the spice.

^"Spoils of War" - Wrecker follows Hunter in climbing up the cargo containers to try to get the rest of the squad out, before needing to jump off and slide down a roof, narrowly avoiding falling off the edge.

^"Truth and Consequences"
Rex: "He's still not better with heights?"
Echo: "This IS him better."
Also worth noting that Wrecker has to deal with heights AND Tech remote piloting the transport (even Hunter gets a little tetchy after almost being thrown off the transport).

^"The Summit," when Wrecker follows his squad to cling to the side of a rail car.

So what is this!? 🤷🏽♀️ What is this, me and Wrecker and his soul-soothing and back-cracking hugs, drawing and talking about 😂 So today you get one of my favorite Wrecker hugs and my first drawing of the one and only Captain Rex and finally… TECH 😎
Sorry, but not sorry – you have to deal with my interpretation of his hair, because I love to draw wavy hair ☺️
Have a look on the portait details! I really like to know, what Echo, Hunter and Tech are thinking in this moment. Let me know, what do you guess?

In my opinion, Echo smirks because this is maybe the first time his captain looks small 😂

Poor Rex 😁 Never gets used to hugs and maybe bone-crashing is a hurting thing too… 😀

This frame might be my favorite in this piece 😄🙏🏼 Hunter looks nearly shocked while Tech shows one of his rare little smiles!
In this artwork it’s the first time, I experimented with light on dark inverted shading and with the color pecker in Procreate, but only for the background colors ☺️ Hope you enjoy 🫶🏼

Just give me more clones...

You know, I don't really care that much about all the lore and what is or isn't canon, the jedi and sith stuff...just give me clones. That's all I want.
I think Hocus Pocus would be his favourite because I'm horribly biased and love that movie so much!

Another week, another poll. Please elaborate in the replies! It's all about building headcanons for our big guy!
So last week fun/“kiddo” movies won out for Wrecker’s Halloween picks.
Sorry I blanked out on the other ones today 😅
