Things I'd Like To See/tired Of Seeing As A T1D (Type 1 Diabetic)

Things I'd like to see/tired of seeing as a T1D (Type 1 Diabetic)

Don't make low bloodsugar a rare thing that requires emergency attention.

I get low bloodsugars often but nothing too bad that causes me to be on the verge of unconsciousness (like I see in shows or movies). The lowest of lows that I get are maybe around 60s or 50s but usually I eat 4 or 5 gummies and it's fine. I've been in the 30s before but that still didn't require a trip to the hospital or glucagon (or as I like to call it, big red).

Talk more about high bloodsugars.

Usually when I'm experiencing a high bloodsugar I feel thirsty and tired. It can make me moody sometimes. It usually takes maybe a couple of hours to come down to a good number. I give myself a dose of insulin to help. Or I'll set a temporary basal on my pump to help even more. It increases my insulin intake and I usually set it 50% or 70% for 1 or 2 hours.

Bloodstains.

Happens a lot, usually from checking my bloodsugar I wipe my finger afterwards but sometimes it still bleeds a little and I don't notice it so I usually get small bloodstains on my hands, clothes, my bed sheets, my plushies unfortunately. It's annoying but it happens sometimes.

Decorations!

There are companys that make decorations for your insulin pumps, your meters (the device that I use to check my bloodsugar), even these circle patch things that go around pump sites (sites are the port thing that goes on my body and connects to my insulin pump with a tube and that's how I get my insulin). I currently have a decal on my pump that has a cool pattern on it. There's also cases. So many options!

Noises.

My pump makes alert noises often for different reasons. (Low insulin cartridge, low battery, time to change your site, etc). But I also hear when my pump gives me insulin. It's not awfully loud but I notice it. I don't know exactly how to describe it but it's sort of like a "drrrrr" sound.

Different pump brands.

There's more than one pump brand. I currently have a T Slim pump. I used to use an Animas pump before they went out of business. Another pump brand is Medtronic. Also the Pod (a tubeless pump that's similar to a site) So keep that in mind!

Site changes and refilling insulin.

I have to change my pump sites usually every 4 days or so? (You're supposed to change it every 3 days but sometimes I go longer to save sites). It's kind of like changing a bandaid. You shouldn't keep the same bandaid on for a month! Also when you do change it you have to move it to a different spot to prevent scarring. I switch between my backside, hips, sometimes thighs. But you can have it other places like your arms or stomach. Anywhere with a lot of body fat to help with pain. Sometimes it accidentally hits a nerve and hurts like hell so I try to avoid that. As for insulin changing, I usually refill it after a week? It fills up to 240+ units of insulin and I usually get a warning when it's down to 40 units to refill it.

CGMS and insulin pumps

they are NOT the same thing. CGM stands for Continuous Glucose Monitoring system. It tracks your bloodsugar so you don't have to have as many finger pricks. I personally don't have a CGM. There isn't a device yet that combines the two that has one site. A lot of people have both and some pumps can communicate with the CGM. Since I'm not too experienced with CGMs I'm going to move on.

Not everyone uses a pump

Some people use shots instead. When I was first diagnosed I was on shots until I got my first insulin pump. There's pros and cons to both. I personally prefer pumps.

That we don't take care of ourselves good enough

I see this trope a lot in fiction and while some people are going to be better at managing their T1D than others, most of the time we stay on it. We're not all on the verge of kidney failure or having to lose a foot.

That we're ashamed or embarrassed so we always hide our sites or pumps

Occasionally there's times where I do decide to keep it more of a secret but I don't usually feel embarrassed or ashamed. Sometimes I think it's cool to show off my site or pump. This is one of those things that's going to be different for each person but personally I'd like to see more characters embracing it.

And lastly. One of the biggest things I see in media that's a MAJOR problem. GIVING SOMEONE INSULIN WHEN THEY HAVE A LOW BLOODSUGAR!

This is very dangerous! You give someone more insulin if they have a HIGH bloodsugar not low! Insulin causes your bloodsugar to go down so you obviously wouldn't give someone with a low bloodsugar more insulin.

This could cause death! This seriously needs to be stopped in media.

(Now obviously there's probably more that I could've talked about but these were the main things off the top of my head. Just remember to do research when writing a T1D character. And if you have a question literally just ask someone who actually is T1D. Thanks for reading! I hoped this could help someone!)

Non T1D can reblog this post but don't add to it.

-reminic (suffix)

New suffix just dropped boiz let's gooo-

-reminic: A gender suffix meaning that no matter what you identify as in that current moment, there are always traces (or remnants) of a specific gender!! This is meant to be used by people who's gender fluctuates, which can include (and is not limited to) genderfluid, xenofluid, genderfae, and/or genderfaun!!! "-reminic" comes from the word reminiscent :]

Reminic can be put onto the end of any gender identity, which would look something like this:

Foxreminic

Xenoreminic

Vulturereminic

Froboreminic (Froboique)

Trans manreminic (working on that one, it looks a bit weird :[)

No flag for today, but I might be able to upload one later on when I have motivation!! - 🦊

i know i've said this before but i'm going to say it again because the more i work with geriatric women the stronger i feel about the fact that the only anti-aging that women in their 20s/30s should be obsessed with is building strong bones and muscle mass. that's like the most important thing you can you can do right now to lay a good foundation for healthy aging. you can botox the shit out of your face but that's not going to do anything to save you from dying prematurely from a fatal hip fracture that you can't bounce back from because you didn't do anything to prevent yourself from becoming frail and breakable. like i know that sounds harsh but that is reality for a lot of older women and i don't want that to be you.

Hello,

I am Tamer Al-Deeb, a Palestinian dentist from Gaza.

I have hesitated and delayed for a long time to write these words and create an account on GoFundMe, but the need has become very urgent due to what I see of death approaching myself and my family.

To begin our story, it is important to introduce my family, who are the core of my existence and the source of my strength during these turbulent times:

We are a family of four suffering for over 9 months from a brutal war that spares neither humans nor stones.

Mother: The Heart of Our Home

My mother embodies generosity and kindness as a devoted homemaker, always prioritizing her family's well-being. Her unwavering love remains our sanctuary amidst the chaos.

Father: The Pillar of Strength

My father, Majed, a dedicated professor, faced the destruction of the university he served. Despite this, his commitment to education and society remains unshaken.

Brother: A Beacon of Healing

My brother, Mohammad, a compassionate doctor, confronts the challenges of healthcare amidst dwindling supplies and occupation brutality, showcasing remarkable dedication to healing.

Tamer: A Dream Deferred

As for myself, Tamer, I was on the verge of a new beginning, with aspirations to further my career in Germany. I had saved thousands of dollars for the mandatory block account to support my stay abroad. However, the conflict has not only shattered my professional dreams but also consumed what didn't burn of my savings, compelling me to fight for my family's survival amidst the escalating costs of basic human necessities.

I have lost the lives of my dearest friends, neighbors, and much of what I loved.

We have lost our home with all its dreams and memories. A five-floor house completely leveled to the ground!!

Since the beginning of the war, we were forced to flee our home in the north of the Gaza Strip to the supposed safe area in the south. But unfortunately, this was just the beginning. We have been displaced four times in the same southern area, fleeing from death always surrounding us.

Initially, we fled to a school belonging to the UNRWA in the Nuseirat camp until we were forced to move to another area, and the Maghazi camp was the intended destination. Then a UNRWA school, where we were residing in a tent inside, was targeted, killing 7 civilians. We were forced to flee again to a tent in Rafah, but the scarcity of clean water and the spread of epidemics and diseases forced us to flee again to a UNRWA school in the Deir Al-Balah area until now.

UNRWA has been providing refuge to hundreds of displaced families for the past six months at schools that have become vital community hubs, offering shelter to thousands of individuals trapped in the southern region.

Women and children sleep inside classrooms, and the men sleep outside in tents set up in the courtyard. Rainstorms recently have flooded our tents, and it's very difficult to take care of our basic needs.

I am currently volunteering at Al-Aqsa Hospital, assisting in the maxillofacial surgery department. However, a sense of helplessness and despair often overwhelms me. It's hard to put into words the horrors and injuries I witness daily. Surrounded by the shroud of death and the cries of the wounded, I feel powerless. "I want to save you, I want you to live," I often think, "I will do everything in my power to make it happen!" Sadly, many times, they become part of the countless casualties from my homeland. The shortages in food, water, and medical supplies are dire, to the extent that we sometimes perform surgeries without anesthesia. The suffering is unimaginable.

Now we hope to escape death, we hope for the end of the war, we hope to leave the Gaza Strip, and we hope to live a decent life away from bombing, occupation, and destruction.

It has been 9 months of hell and horror. This genocide has been too long to bear, and our mental health and lives are in constant danger. (I can’t describe enough what I have been dealing with daily in the hospitals for the past days. We have reached a point where there is no hope left for us here in Gaza, where we are unfortunately just waiting for our turn to die, and even if there is a ceasefire, the destruction in Gaza is beyond prompt repair

Evacuation fees are expensive, especially now that I have no source of income. Once we can evacuate, your donations will cover our travel expenses and help us get immediate support in Egypt. There will be meal expenses, wardrobe expenses, emergency expenses, etc., but no generous contribution will go to waste.

To cross the “Rafah” Gaza-Egypt Borders, you need to have your name listed in the Crossing List (paid permit), and coordinators in Egypt who have the power to add my family’s names to the list at the border are now asking for anywhere from $6-8,000 per PERSON! They will not add the names until we can prove we have the money ready.

I ask for your help because this is not just my battle alone, but a battle in which we seek your helping hand to survive and preserve our families. Any donation, big or small, will have a huge impact on the lives of my family and me. I am grateful to everyone who donates, and I will remain grateful forever for giving hope and opportunity to me and my family to survive and build a better future.

Thank you for reading my story. For sharing my story with your friends and family. I hope, there is a ceasefire, and we can get the rest and safety we deserve to build our lives all over again. ❤️
