hey i have this excellent theory about the dangerous gift BUT i’m not about spoilers so i will put it below the cut and i hope it works (also all spoilers will be tagged as tdg spoilers)

Ok so we know that jerboa got rid of all animus magic, but I think I found a loophole in her spell. On page 292, jerboa enchants the candleholder to shatter the power of all current animus dragons. She also says "no new spells cast by any animus dragon alive today." So I feel like any animus dragon born after this would probably have normally working magic. It would be pretty cool if this is tui's idea, but even if it's not and animus magic is just gone forever, that's still a pretty insane plot twist. someone’s probably said this before but this idea has been in my notes app for like a week so i had to post it

first up peril is touch starved. so so touch starved

the first time clay kissed her she cried (and then clay started crying)

just like in book 8, they brush wings whenever they pass each other in the hallways

peril grew up with scarlet telling her that things like sadness and affection are a sign of weakness, so she has a hard time showing her emotions and therefore is easily flustered

whenever clay does something like twine his tail around hers or kiss the back of her hand (which is something he would TOTALLY DO), she just dies

clay used to act super nervous and twitchy whenever peril was around his students, which made her very sad, but now he's gotten over it and trusts her to be careful

being protective is in his nature so peril didn't hold it against him that much

you know what else is in his nature? being an absolute god at cooking

he tried to teach peril but she just ended up burning all the food and honestly what was he expecting

since peril also burns the food he prepares when she picks it up, he feeds it to her by hand which is honestly very sweet and they both think it's the height of romance

the two of them go flying together all the time, especially in the morning when the sun is starting to rise and hardly anyone else is in the sky

peril's favorite class in jade mountain is herbs and healing, both because clay is the teacher and because she likes the idea of being a healer instead of just a fiery death monster

of course clay will give her extra lessons because if it makes her happy then who is he to refuse

his favorite thing is making peril laugh

he will make all kinds of stupid dad jokes just to see the sparks that come out of her nose when she snorts

peril isn't very good with words so she shows affection through actions

namely, she likes to bring clay mud when he's feeling tired like in the first book, but now that she knows he's fireproof, she massages it onto his scales
