I Suppose What Annoys Me About Tabletop RPGs Whose Primary Pitch Is Puts The Story First! Is That It
I suppose what annoys me about tabletop RPGs whose primary pitch is “puts the story first!” is that it fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between the rules and the narrative. The defining feature of tabletop RPGs is that interpreting the outcomes of the rules produces a story, and in this sense, all tabletop RPGs “put the story first” – the idea that some tabletop RPGs are About Stories and some tabletop RPGs are Not About Stories is a false dichotomy.
The trouble is that game rules are opinionated about the kinds of story they want to produce, and folks end up conflating “this game’s rules want to produce a different kind of story from the one that I want to tell” with “this game’s rules don’t produce stories at all”, which is not a constructive way to frame things; keep up with that line of thinking and you’re on a short road to becoming one of those dogmatic weirdos who thinks there’s exactly one correct way to pretend to be an elf.

THE DEE SANCTION
#31daycharacterchallenge
The Dee Sanction caught my attention when it came out, but I only managed to read it lately. From the Cthulhu Hack's author, it expands and completes the approaches that blossomed there, resulting in a game with a strong identity, thanks to its characters being convicts saved from a death sentence in exchange for their services as intelligence agents working for Queen Elizabeth I in a world rife with conspiracy and riddled with bad omens. Occult espionage in the late XVI century, if you will.
Gregory Borrow was a street urchin good with his hands, who managed to apprentice with a skilled artisan, that later introduced him to the Compagnonnage and the network of smiths he was a part of as well. His small stature and weak constitution are balanced by a keen intellect, and, during his travels to become a journeyman, he became involved with a group of cipher enthusiasts, that turned out to be an occult covenant. His involvement with them led him to be part of a heist that blew up in their face, causing a victim and Gregory's imprisonment. That's where he learned about the Dee Sanction, and became an agent of the Queen.

#31daycharacterchallenge
The first time I read through Pokéthulhu I hoped for a moment that the animated series were reality. In hindsight, it's probably for the best that never happened. A really old indie game, it's a mash up of Pokémon and Cthulhu, where kids go around catching monsters man was not meant to know and challenge each other to see who has the shiniest dodecahedron and the greater eldritch pet. The system is crunchier than you'd expect from something like this, and the trash talk initiative dynamic is delicious.
Philip Fondsmith is a little hooligan with a rather big mouth who likes to go where he isn't supposed to. His copy of the Pokénomicon is actually stolen from the home of a kid who went to college leaving his copy behind, as is his first shining dodecahedron, but his first catch is his own, and that's when he discovered he has an affinity with thulhu.
Octot'ath is Philip's first catch, captured in the pond behind the haunted house, it's not a particularly strong or fast one, but she's tough, and she grew fond of his Trainer when he wasn't scared by the ominous glow surrounding her alien shape. Truth is, he was simply paralysed by fear, but she's too alien to understand it.

The Lego Movie is something that only happens once in life because you cannot recreate the experience of being dragged to "stupid marketing ploy to sell plastic bricks to 5 year olds" and 90 minutes later come out of "surreal cosmic horror comedy about the existential dread of artistic expression and the meaning of free will with commentary on capitalist oligarchy. To sell plastic bricks to 5 year olds."
