SPN Freethinking – On the Subject of Billie and the Magical Coffin

Something I’ve been tossing around in my head for a little bit that I wanted to get out there. Dean is so certain that Billie’s magic coffin is the only way to stop au!Michael. But why is he so certain of this? Why is he so sure this is the best option? Because Billie told him it was? Did Billie show him every single one of his new death books and then tell him that the magical coffin was the best way? No, she didn’t. She showed him one book i.e. the book with the path she wants Dean to go with. I think we need to start looking at Billie as a form of an unreliable narrator. She works for the universe, she’s giving Dean a map to the best outcome that will suit the universe’s bigger picture…not necessarily what will suit the Winchester’s or Earth’s. There could very well be another solution in one of those death books that while may be a viable option for Earth and its inhabitants but maybe not so much for the universe as a whole. Her role is to keep the universe balanced. She gave that book to Dean hoping he’ll choose that particular path (after all, she’s still bound to the rules of freewill after all, Dean still has to make the choice to do it) but we have nothing to go on besides her word that that’s the only option, it’s just the option that works best for her and the universe’s needs. Granted, the whole topic on freewill and what she can adhere to is getting a little muddled due to her very obvious interference but as we’ve seen with angels, we can’t look at freewill as this very specific thing. You have to think about freewill in more abstract terms. Even if you are being manipulated by a third party into making a particular choice, you’re still making that choice…it doesn’t matter that there was outside interference. Freewill in it’s most basic form is just about making a choice. It’s like you’re taking a test. You have options A, B, or C and you pick one and that’s that. It doesn’t matter if the class bully was distracting you by throwing spitballs at you so you accidentally circled A instead of B. It was still technically your choice. I’m not necessarily saying that Billie is lying but I also think we need to look into the possibility that Billie isn’t telling Dean the whole truth. That she’s leaving things out in order to steer him into a particular decision that meets her particular needs. And we’ve also seen that these death books can change. Did the death books change because this Michael isn’t from this universe and is therefore an outside source that affected the world in ways the universe hadn’t predicted before? If that’s the case, we have a group of apocalypse survivors that can also affect these books. They were never meant to be a part of this particular world so their presence could potentially change things. I mean, they’ve been talking about Michael upsetting the balance but what about these groupings of hunters that shouldn’t exist in this world and are now saving people that the universe hadn’t necessarily accounted for being saved. Yeah, I can understand why Billie might be a little bit angry with tfw for breaking into other worlds. I’m sure its causing a big huge mess for her to clean up.
