Delaware Today
—
This is a piece for Delaware Today about young girls losing interest in science, technology, engineering and math related studies. The state’s schools and businesses are hoping to turn all this around. I love it when I come up with a few sketches that I still want to use for something and this was one of those times. A big thanks to AD Kelly Carter!

You may have gotten this question before, but do you know the rest of the nantucket story?
No, I have not gotten this question before; thank you for finally asking!
To answer said question: yes, I know both the dirty and the clean versions. Oddly enough, I actually learned the dirty version long before I even knew there was a clean one. When I was younger, my Mom used to recite it to me, as it had been recited to her by her father when she was a little girl:
(NB: the “****”s are pronounced as muffled noises)
There once was a man from Nantucket
Whose **** was so long he could **** it.
He said with a grin
As he wiped off his chin,
"If my ear was a **** I could **** it!"
Having a terrible sense of humor is a proud family tradition which we take very seriously.
During the cretaceous period, velociraptors never said “I love you.” They hunted in packs and would attack dinosaurs several times their size and then run off to a safe distance to watch as their quarry collapsed from exhaustion due to blood loss. I think that’s beautiful.

Hunter Cole - Artist and Geneticist
Cole grows the bacteria in a liquid culture, and then uses the culture as her paint, applying it to a gelatinous augur in a petri dish, as if the augur were a canvas. When applied, the culture is clear, but over a 24 hour period it slowly begins to glow, becoming more visible. For the two weeks following the culture’s application, as the bacteria grows and dies, the drawing changes.
