ASPCA on Cat Care:

“Please keep your cat indoors. Outdoor cats do not live as long as indoor cats. Outdoor cats are at risk of trauma from cars, or from fights with other cats, raccoons and free-roaming dogs. Coyotes are known to eat cats. Outdoor cats are more likely to become infested with fleas or ticks, as well as contract infectious diseases.”

Humane society’s days:

"The Humane Society of the United States believes that every cat deserves a life free from hunger or thirst, fear and distress, discomfort, pain, injury, or disease, and that cats at risk for these are our responsibility to care for. Regardless of whether they are owned or not, cats who are outdoors are the leading cause of cat overpopulation in communities and can be a conservation threat to at least some species of wildlife on a case-by-case basis.”

American Veterinary Medical Association’s policy:

“The AVMA encourages veterinarians to educate clients and the public about the risks associated with allowing cats free-roam access to the outdoors. Keeping owned cats confined, such as housing them in an enriched indoor environment, in an outdoor enclosure, or exercising leash-acclimated cats, can minimize the risks to the cat, wildlife, humans, and the environment.”

American Association of Feline Practitioners:

“Veterinarians are encouraged to educate clients and the public concerning the dangers associated with allowing cat's free-roam access to the outdoors.” 

Nature published an article which said this in the introduction:

“Our findings suggest that free-ranging cats cause substantially greater wildlife mortality than previously thought and are likely the single greatest source of anthropogenic mortality for US birds and mammals.”

National Wildlife Foundation posted about:

“...two new studies that provide more evidence of the havoc outdoor cats wreak on wild birds and other wildlife.”

I want to emphasize two points:

1) Outdoor enclosures and harness/leash training are a thing. My cat is harness trained and I plan on taking him outside soon. I’m not saying never ever let your cat experience the outdoors; just do it safely. 

2) What I’ve collected here does not apply to working cats (like barn cats or farm cats). I simply don’t know enough about that subject to comment, nor does that appear to be the focus of any of the information I’ve collected.

I hate when Europeans try to shame me for having an indoor cat. “Oh, you should let him be free to run and play and hunt outside.”

Like, do you know what’s outside in America? Guns and cars.
