ways to describe facial expressions in writing

humans can obviously talk to communicate, but you have to remember that, naturally, we use our face to show expressions as well.

EYES

- widened in surprise/shock, filled with confusion/hurt

- narrowed into a glare

- filled with tears

- looking down at the ground defeatedly

- gleaming with mischief

- shining with hope/determination

- burning with hate

- emotionless stare

EYEBROWS

- raised in surprise

- furrowed in confusion/thought/worry

- one eyebrow perked to show attitude

NOSE

- scrunched in digust

- blushing with embarrassment

- lifted higher = more confidence/bigger ego

- aimed lower = less confident/weak

MOUTH

- in a pout = upset

- gaping with shock/confusion

- lips shaking from trying to hold back tears

- pursed in thought

- pulled into a smirk

- widened into a grin

PUTTING THEM TOGETHER

- Eyes wide and mouth gaping, they felt numb with shock.

- They felt their face begin to burn as they shifted their gaze to the ground.

- They pursed their lips as they concentrated, brow furrowing.

- Their eyes gleamed with mischief as they smirked.

using facial expressions is very useful in writing. simply using dialogue to express your characters’ emotions and thoughts will lose your audience’s attention and interest.

keep these in mind while writing!

Beginning Sentences

…a smut writer’s playground. Even small changes can transform a simple sentence into an interesting paragraph starter or piece of dialogue. So here goes a compilation of tips that can help you achieve that effect.

| trick #1

Give away the most important bit of information at the end of the sentence — all while placing a character’s reaction to a previous event at the very start. That way, you sync with the reader’s response and anticipation, all while creating suspense.

| trick #2

As a rule of thumb, two to three commas in a sentence, albeit best used scarcely, indicate your sentence marks a paragraph’s highlight. Draw a short subclause to the beginning. Since commas can make for a complex read, it needs an eye-catcher.

| trick #3

Replace subject pronouns that begin a sentence with gerunds. “He shivered, searching for the blanket” becomes “Shivering, he searched for the blanket”. While both versions can sound elegant, I find that the latter can connect any action to a prior sentence much better. In other words, it generates sophisticated reading flow. PS: You can also draw the existing gerund (”searching for the blanket”) to the front, similar effect.

Deliberately. Fragment. Your Sentences. Once in a While. Start out the sequence with an adverb. You can employ this very expressive stylistic device to describe more intense sexual feelings or sensations. I personally reserve it for orgasms.

Pick the doubt of your protagonist as a sentence starter, then go on to describe that they act against said concern regardless. “Although she was unsure how to do it, getting the new toy to work put a smile on her face.”

| trick #6

Should you run out of ideas, an “If only…” sentence can introduce variety and a character’s thought.

| trick #7

The curious case of writing a solid beginning but not coming up with an appropriate end, no matter how hard you try, probably means the sentence is already perfect as it is. Just place a dash, done. The rest of the thought is either obvious to the reader or involves them in a guessing game.

| trick #8

Colloquialize the start by leaving a pronoun or (p)article away. Especially in dialogues. “I would’ve guessed you’re cheating” becomes “Would’ve guessed you’re cheating”. It rolls off the character’s tongue quite well and brings speech to life.
