Today In Black Excellence: Shirley Chisholm, The First African Americanand The First Womanto Seek Nomination

Today in Black Excellence: Shirley Chisholm, the first African American—and the first woman—to seek nomination for President.

“I want history to remember me... not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of The United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America.”

—Shirley Chisholm

Chisholm wanted to be remembered as a “catalyst for change.” What did she do?

Shirley Anita Chisholm was a politician, educator, and writer. There would be no Barack Obama or Kamala Harris without her—she was a trailblazer in every sense of the word.

Citing her “double-handicap” of being a Black woman, Chisholm initially rejected a political career but became increasingly engaged in fighting racial and gender inequality. She eventually joined the Democratic Party in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, winning a seat in the United States Congress in 1968, and becoming the first Black woman to do so.

What did she achieve in politics?

With a seat at the table, “Fighting Shirley” introduced over 50 pieces of legislation on behalf of the poor, protesting racial and gender inequality. She became a fierce critic of the Vietnam War when opposition to the war was considered radical. Her outspoken assault on injustice earned her few friends in the white political establishment.

While campaigning for the 1972 primaries, Chisholm was allowed only one speech in televised debates and was otherwise blocked from participation. Despite this, students, women, and minorities proved loyal supporters: In 12 primaries, she garnered 152 (10%) of delegates’ votes, despite a poorly financed campaign and widespread political hostility.

The 1972 primaries also displayed her remarkable character, when she chose to visit racist and segregationist Governor George Wallace of Alabama in hospital after a failed assassination attempt.

After retiring from Congress in 1983, Chisholm taught at Mount Holyoke College and co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women.

“It was an honor to create a piece celebrating Shirley Chisholm. She was the first Black woman elected to Congress and to seek a major party nomination for presidency. Her trailblazing career is truly inspiring and I wanted to capture her power, her bravery and her magic. Her motto Unbought and Unbossed implores us to forge our own path no matter what obstacles try to stand in our way."

Prologue

Prologue

pairing: iwaizumi x femblack!reader

synopsis: ballet au fic (updated weekly)

word count: 343

warnings: none

type: fanfiction

a/n: rewriting an unfinished story from wattpad. inspired by dance academy and dance moms. this is just a intro so the first chapter is coming after. i loooove dance academy btw^^

Charlène Aveline's Dance Company. A prestigious dance school that teaches children from 11-18. With 319 acres of land, the school is absolutely stunning. With fifteen different buildings including a shopping center for students, its better then most universities in Sydney. The most impressive however was the competitive team. There was an elite group of 6 or 7 senior dancers that traveled across the world competing with the best of the best in the industry.

Oikawa and Y/n. Now Oikawa has been his best friend for years. Iwaizumi was proud of his friend for being in the top two. Girls flocked to him after class and teachers constantly praised his ballet skills. Y/n had been Oikawa's friend for years. Iwaizumi was her friend too, but not as close as Oikawa was to her. Y/n and Oikawa fought for the top spot at the end of every semester and many students thought the couple would be cute together.

Many students, but not Iwaizumi. He knew Oikawa didn't harbor feelings for the girl, but knowing that the majority felt that his friend did made him believe it a little bit. Naturally Iwaizumi didn't get as much of the spotlight as his friends, but he didn't mind. With their next year of high school starting, Iwaizumi found it quite difficult to live in his shadow.

He snapped out of his own thoughts and continued drinking his smoothie. As the last day of summer vacation, Iwaizumi and friends were on the beach soaking in the last few days of summer. He watched Oikawa and Y/n sprint back to the rest of the group. He sighed. Oikawa seemed to have forgot his promise to help Iwaizumi over the summer.

At least he wouldn't have to worry about auditions this year. After being on the senior team for two years at least, you wouldn't have to audition anymore unless someone threatened your spot. He watched Y/n laugh as Oikawa whispered something to her. Iwaizumi huffed again. He was going to have to remind his friend about the conversation they had.

Friday July 25th

Ayano Shimizu awoke to an aching pain in her legs. She was instantly reminded of her harsh swimming practice the day before and sat up in bed.

Glancing around her room, she grabbed her phone from the nightstand and checked for any new messages. Yawning, she replied to Kiyoko's message.

Grabbing the nearest hair tie, she pulled her shoulder length hair into a ponytail. 6:30 am. Throwing away the last of the purple hair dye, she looked at herself in the mirror.

Seems like I did my ombre right this time, she thought to herself. Heading downstairs, she found her younger brother Toshiaki arguing with her older sister, Yuuka.

"Hey Ayano, can you get your sister?" Yuuka scoffed, "He's the one who ate all my candy." "No I didn't." Ayano grabbed the empty box from both of them, "I ate the rest of your candy. Are Mom and Dad already gone?" They nodded in unison and Ayano threw the box away.

She grabbed the eggs out of the fridge and began cracking two of them into a pan. "Hey Yuuka can you make lunch for us?" Yuuka nods and nudges Toshiaki to set the table up. Finishing the eggs, Ayano uses leftover kobachi to finish making breakfast.

"Thank you for the meal."

After eating, Ayana headed upstairs to finish getting dressed for the day. Sharing a room with her sister Yuuka, she rarely ever got to the hot water first.

While waiting for her sister to finish, she packed her backpack. Adding the new charm she purchased yesterday to the keychain attached to her bag, she heard the shower turn off. Ayano grabbed her towel and uniform and raced to the bathroom they shared together.

After enjoying her shower, she glanced at the clock once more. 7:30. She really needed to hurry. Grabbing her house keys from her nightstand and stuffing her phone into her purse, she headed downstairs without saying goodbye to her siblings. Despite this, they were right on her heels, trying to catch the train with her.

They all made it on time of course. Exhausted and sticky from the July heat, they each took a seat on the empty train.

This was a daily occurrence to them ever since Toshiaki went to middle school. Getting closer to the school, the train filled up causing them to have to give up their seats. Reaching their stop, they still had five blocks to walk.

This was usually when the three split up into their own friend groups. Toshiaki went with his friends from the baseball team and Yuuka went with her friends from the choir club. Ayano however usually walked with Kiyoko.

Sure the boys following her was a bit obnoxious, but she was glad that the seniors didn't hit on her when she was walking with Kiyoko.

The walk was usually silent except for a greeting or two. Ayano and Kiyoko were different that way. Ayano could talk to anyone, while Kiyoko preferred the quiet. "You guys have the prelims soon right? Is that what you call them?" "Yep, if we make it we have to go against some powerhouse schools." "I know you guys will do great." Ayano gives Kiyoko a smile as they enter the school.

Ayano waves as they get separated into their different hallways. Spotting her friends, Ayano pulled them both into a hug by their lockers. "Any reason why today is different from any other day?" Kazuo, the older twin, asks.

His usually ear length black hair was cut short today. "I like the new haircut, Kazuo. "At least someone appreciates it," he says over exaggerating the someone in his sentence.

"Hey it's not my fault I don't think you'll pull girls with that cut," Saori replies. Saori's usual pink pigtails were nowhere to be found and an elegant ponytail replaced them.

"I wouldn't be talking if my roots were growing out," Ayano teased. Kazuo tried to hide his laughter which earned him a slap from Saori. The three headed up the stairs to the second year hallway.

Nishinoya spots Kazuo instantly and they do their handshake. Tanaka isn't far behind joining in with them.

Kazuo gives a small wave as he joins the boys to wherever they spent their time before class. Saori laughed a bit, "He really likes them doesn't he?" "You sound like his mom. C'mon we're going to be late."

Saori and Ayano were in class 2-4 while the boys were in class 2-3. They sat near the window where they could easily pass notes back and forth.

Saori sat in front of her in the third seat, and Ayano in the fourth. Today however, the desks were pushed together into groups of four implying group work was happening.

Miyu Kimura and Kazuki Okazaki were already seated and sharing snacks with each other. Ayano sat next to Kimura and Saori sat next to Okazaki.

Saori knew Ayano was unaware of her growing crush on Kimura and Okazaki and she wanted to keep it that way. Kimura's long blonde curls were always tied up in a bun and Okazaki's dark blue hair was long overdue for a haircut. Today he had his hair pulled back in a bun with fly away strands here and there.

Ayano started chatting away from club activities to meeting Tanaka later. Saori didn't understand why it was so easy for her to talk about anything with people.

A part of her was jealous and a part of her admired her. Their homeroom teacher walked in, signaling the beginning of class.

After attendance was taken, they began with math. The group work in math required poster boards to be made which put Ayano and Okazaki in charge of design.

Ayano and Saori switched seats so Saori and Kimura sat next to each other to work on the math problems.

"Thanks again for helping with the posters, Shimizu," Okazaki gave Ayano a smile. "It's no problem really. You can call me by my first name Okazaki. You know what would be fun? If we all dyed our hair together. Me, you, Saori, and Kimura." "This Saturday?" "If I leave practice early."

Saori hummed as she did the problems Kimura assigned her to do. She couldn't help but admire Kimura's neat handwriting and the little doodles she did on the side. Catching herself staring, she adjusted her glasses and continued writing. "Hey Saori, your coming right?" Kimura asked her. Okazaki and Ayano looked at her with excitement.

"Going where exactly?" "To dye our hair Saturday. I just did mine so I'll help you guys," Ayano replied barely containing her excitement. "Yeah who's house we going to?" "Mine since no one will be home. We can order food and stuff," Okazaki interrupts, pushing Ayano out the way. Saori couldn't say no to their smiling faces and gave in.

They verbally cheered and went back to designing the poster board.

"Heya Tanaka." Ayano sat next to Tanaka at the lunch table outside. "Heya Ayano. I can't wait for you to see me at practice." Saori sat across from the two with Okazaki on her right and Kimura on her left. "I can't wait either. Wanna hang out Sunday?" Tanaka nods eagerly," Where to?" "The arcade of course! I heard it's cheaper on Sunday." Nishinoya and Kazuo sat next to Tanaka with their lunch.

"Hey guys what're you talking about?" Nishinoya asks. "Just two lovebirds," Kimura replied nodding towards Ayano and Tanaka. "Hey we are not lovebirds, just two friends talking," Ayano argued. Saori gave her a look indicating she knew about her feelings for Tanaka.

"Well guess who I saw guys? Kiyoko! And she had a purple strand in her hair!" "Really? I bet she looks sooo pretty."

Hearing Tanaka talk about how pretty he found Kiyoko was a daily occurrence. It annoyed Ayano, considering her and Kiyoko had similar features. Today made her even angrier because her hair was already a purple ombre and Kiyoko just had a purple strand. Is she really that pretty? Ayano asked herself.

She stayed silent for the remainder of lunch, not wanting to contribute in the conversation anymore. She didn't hate Kiyoko, she just wished people didn't choose Kiyoko over herself.
