Months later and I’m still trying to figure out why they had Mike and Will fight again after they seemingly made up in season three. It doesn’t serve much of a purpose at first glance. Will being in love with Mike would’ve been just as convincing if they were in contact the whole time since the move. Their heart to hearts could’ve worked just as well. But they decided they needed that extra tension and all I can think is that the distance serves two points:

1) To make Will think Mike and El have a better relationship than they do.

2) To make both Mike and Will uncertain about how much the other cares for them.

Interesting.

this comes up every day i feel but like i cannot stress enough how mike implying that will can't be categorized the same as lucas dustin and max is a dead giveaway on his part. their bond is inherently different because in his head he can't reconcile his idea of friendship with what he feels for will. his feelings for will are fundamentally different because they're not platonic and that's what sets will apart from the rest of the party
