you wish you were me. finding caterpillars on my tomato plants 4 millimeters long. I found like 3 more today. definitely in the cutworm family.

hi ive been wanting to post these photos for like 2 or 3 months bc i cant believe i caught it on camera! cardinal got cowbirded...
[Image ID: Two close up photos of two birds on a dogwood tree branch. The bird on the left is a juvenile cowbird, which is a greyish brown colour. The bird on the right is an adult male northern cardinal, which has a red coloured body with a black circle around the eyes and beak. Both photos have a white, translucent watermark in the bottom left corner, which reads ‘xrinsu 2022′. In the first photo, the northern cardinal is stretched left toward the juvenile cowbird, and has his beak in the cowbirds open beak. In the second photo, the juvenile cowbird still has their beak open and looking toward the cardinal; the cardinal is standing upright and is looking upwards, over the cowbird. End ID]

spider friends from today :) first one is most likely a tan jumping spider (Platycryptus undatus) and second is also a jumping spider of a different species! fast little rascals..
first photo: a zoomed out picture of a tan jumping spider, which is a small, brown and grey spider facing upwards, in the center. the spider is sitting on a light brown tree trunk, with pine straw in front of the tree.
second photo: the same spider but close up and facing downwards, on a light brown piece of bark.
third photo: a zoomed out picture of a twin-flagged jumping spider, a small, black and white spider facing upwards in the center. the spider is on a medium reddish brown tree trunk, and the left fourth of the photo shows the ground and street behind the tree.
fourth photo: a zoomed out photo of the same spider facing upwards on the same tree, but it is further up and to the right. this photo shows the back of the spider more clearly.

tiny bluets for a long day

little creature I found last night scuttling in the rain. i believe they are part of the cherry millepede family (Xystodesmidae), probably in the genus Dicellarius. image id in alt text.
