Day One Of Posting Cute Critters We Found On Our Field Trip:

A big fat millipede (Pachyjulus hungaricus). It’s called Hungarian millipede, but hilariously, it doesn’t live in Hungary at all. It’s most likely called Hungarian millipede because it has red and green stripes like Hungarian flag 🇭🇺. It’s one of the biggest millipedes in Europe and produces stinky yellow chemicals in self defense. This big guy is curled up in classic defensive pose.

Btw, most millipedes are completely safe to hold. They don’t bite and the chemicals they produce are usually harmless to the skin. Only a few tropical species can cause damage or inflammation to the skin. However, DO NOT EVER hold a centipede! Centipedes can deliver a nasty bite. The easiest way to differentiate them is by looking at their body shape. If it’s rounded and friend-shaped and curls up like this, it’s a millipede. But if it’s flat, with many legs sticking out sideways and with long antennas, then it’s a centipede so avoid it (but don’t kill it, centipedes eat cockroaches and other pest insects and they are a very important part of the ecosystem).

one of the most impressive animals I met this year was a huge platyrhacid millipede, found chugging through some bamboo leaf litter in Malaysia.

he was a pleasant weight to hold in the hand, but spread out over so many gentle, graceful legs. the video offers a nice look at his eyeless face—all polydesmidan millipedes lack eyes.

I only hung onto this animated spinal cord for about thirty seconds before setting him back in the leaves, but I recall this encounter so vividly. a truly memorable creature

Hi! :)

Hi! :)

I use Clip Studio Paint for my art, a program that has a heavy focus on comic and manga art. Today I decided that I would start to play around with some of the provided features, and sketch out a potential comic page, with some of bugs I enjoy drawing.

Critique is always welcome, and I hope you have a nice day!
