Later, I remember leaves, through car windows, through bedroom windows, through the classroom window, the way they shaded and patterned the ground, all that            power from roots. Imagine you must survive without running? I’ve come from the lacing patterns of leaves,            I do not know where else I belong.

Maybe you move your mouth like everyone moves their mouth. Maybe your mouth is the same mouth as everyone's all trying to say the same thing.

“You sing a little, call your family, you think, things aren’t so bad.
You say you love the world, so love the world.
Maybe you don’t even say it for yourself, maybe you move your mouth like everyone moves their mouth. Maybe your mouth is the same mouth as everyone’s, all trying to say the same thing.”

IT’S THE SEASON I OFTEN MISTAKE // Birds for leaves, and leaves for birds. / The tawny yellow mulberry leaves / are always goldfinches tumbling / across the lawn like extreme elation. / The last of the maroon crabapple / ovates are song sparrows that tremble / all at once. And today, just when I / could not stand myself any longer, / a group of field sparrows, which were / actually field sparrows, few up into / the bare branches of the hackberry / and I almost collapsed: leaves / reattaching themselves to the tree / like a strong spell for reversal. What / else did I expect? What good / is accuracy amidst the perpetual / scattering that unspools the world.
