ik this is probably pointless to discuss but imagine women being confined for centuries with beauty standards and wanting to look perfect at all times just for males to come out and say “WE have it harder and you will never understand what we have to go through” it just makes you angry. Like what? ( i wish i could articulate my thoughts better )
I hate it when people say "if you take off your makeup, you'll be ugly!"
They need to realize that makeup is an enhancement of the beauty that is already there.
Look at it this way, if I drew an art piece that was already good, then put small designs on it that made it look a bit more interesting, at the end of the day, the original art pieces beauty matters to the final product. If it was not-so-great looking at first, some small designs probably wont be able to make it stunningly beautiful.
In simple terms, makeup is enhancement, not erasure or cover up.
So funny to me when people say that they're a communist but then buy makeup because "the company says they support feminism."

Thinkin' about how I was gifted one of those toy makeup sets when I was like 7-8 years old. I looked up "toy makeup playset" to try to find one similar to what I had.
Is it not viscerally disturbing that girls are marketed toys that perpetuate beauty industry propaganda when they're barely out of diapers? We're conditioned from day one to associate girlhood with cosmetics/makeup.
And yet, so many girls still want to pretend that their decision to wear makeup is definitely an empowering personal choice and not at all influenced by outside factors. :(
Things that are not self care:
1) doing your makeup
2) shaving
3) plucking your eyebrows
4) over the top and expensive skin care routines
5) any activity that is actually just Beauty Maintenance expected of you
Things that are self care:
1) meditation and practicing mindfulness
2) clipping and buffing your nails
3) keeping up with regular hygiene
4) trying new kinds of tea
5) any activity centered around making you feel whole and healthy
hey quick question, what do radical feminism has to say about heels and makeup? I know historically men used to wear heels and then women did too, but I don’t know if wearing heels has somehow been twisted by the patriarchy. I also want to know the same thing about makeup, and all the things that are associated with femininity. I also maybe understood that radical feminism doesn’t believe in concepts like femininity and masculinity, could you explain why? Thank you.
Okay reasons off the top of my head to say no to heels and makeup and femininity in general as advised to me by radical feminism:
expensive
stupid
men aren't socially expected to do these things
waste of time
signals to other women you think of yourself as a human being
gives you more room to be human
can rub your eyes
feet don't hurt
no long lasting health problems
makes you more attractive to men
There is a book called the Beauty Myth that you might be interested in reading. I haven't read it myself nor know if it's strictly radical feminism or just critical of the beauty industry in general, but it's been quoted on radblr and well reviewed.
I think I know what you're talking about with regards to rf not believing in concepts like femininity. Femininity and masculinity are gender roles, and as such they are not innate. This also means they change over time and place. You can see this in your example. It was once part of the male gender role to wear heels and now it's almost strictly part of the female gender role. So, yes, femininity and masculinity DO unfortunately exist, but they are not innate, as evidenced to us by masculine women and feminine men.
watching the olympics, it's always frustrating to me that the women are still tryna be so "pretty." like male swimmers will have black swimming caps and black goggles--just neutral shit--but female swimmers will have to make their accessories pink and "girly" all complete with some patriotic fake nails. the beach volleyball females have swimming bottoms riding up their crack like g-strings, men winking and cracking jokes about why they love watching it. female runners with contoured faces, perfect liquid eyeliner flicks and lip liner to suit. hell, you'll be watching female weightlifting and they'll have fake lashes on. like "yeah i know i'm doing something super unattractive to men rn like daring to be stronger and more athletic than them, but look! the pink! the glitter! the false lashes! i'm still fuckable! don't put me in the ugly category!" so tired of women surrendering their power to men lmao
saying you look better without makeup shouldn't be so taboo tbh. like some women need to be told that their fake lashes and heaped foundation and painted eyebrows look objectively terrible and their natural features are hot. why can't i say that you look hot fresh-faced? because you do. forget whatever men think. those freaks would fuck a piece of abandoned carboard in a dirty street. they don't even know what a healthy woman looks like. they have literally lost all objectivity. these fools don't even know how our bodies work and you expect them to give an accurate opinion on what kind of woman looks good or healthy? they don't know shit! your pooch is actually attractive! so is your buccal fat! so is your arm and leg hair! YOU'RE A BABE! stop trying to get rid of the babe-ness!
So I’ve been teaching 6th grade since January, and one thing about my female students which made me upset to realize is how many of them are obsessed with skincare. I've heard the girls in my class discussing the EYE CREAM they use. Like tf you mean eye cream? You're ELEVEN!!! I'm a decade older than you and have never even touched eye cream!! The most skincare a middle schooler needs is cleanser and moisturizer, maybe some acne cream. Who tf is selling you all this other stuff? Who tf told you you needed all this?
It hurts me to see. Their brains are too young for these types of insecurities 😭 no 11 year old girl should be obsessed with wrinkles, I wanna beat tf out of whatever tiktoker made them believe they needed skin that perfect
if hearing a girl criticize consumerism and beauty/makeup/anti-body hair culture or even just saying they don't like wearing makeup or shaving or performing femininity immediately makes you label them a pick-me maybe that's your own conscience or internalised guilt projecting just sayin'. maybe she isn't the one who thinks you're anti-feminist for wearing makeup (let's face it she most probably doesn't because most people fucking wear makeup) but your visceral defensiveness at someone just existing outside conventional beauty standards says more about you than it probably does about them
Almost a year ago I got my "dream job" of working at Sephora. I had already began reading a lot of rad fem literature by the time I got there.
10 years ago I would have loved it but by the time I was working there I was already aware of the dystopian nightmare it really is.
It was one thing to help someone find a basic skin care routine to calm their skin but when we had to push certain products.
To make the sales goals you had to look at a woman's face and slowly ask and press them on their flaws and suggest the magic product that would help them.
I did it for one day, I killed it on the sales floor. I could not sleep that night and had already began drafting my resignation letter.
When I grew up, drag full face glam was popular but now it was the "no makeup, clean girl" look and I had to help girl find foundations that would hide their flaws.
Their flaws were either
1. Natural human function of the largest organ we have
2. Cover up the damage they were continuing to do with all the latest products.
I pleaded with parents to not buy little girls skin care than I knew would destroy their skin barriers. But isn't that the point? So when they grow up they need products to help cover up or heal the damage they have caused.
They paid so little I couldn't even afford most of the products in the store even with my discount.
We would have to clap when told we made the company billions of dollars in profits.
It really pushed home the oppressive costume that is "femininity".
I have a lot more to say but I'm droning now.
But I have to say I understand now why people do not want to engage with radical feminism because it "ruins" everything. Everywhere you look you realize the psyops being ran to keep woman consuming and enjoying their bonds.
