Broken Crowns and Shattered Thrones // Lee Seokmin // prince!au

[PART 02 of my Witchy October Drabbles series]

Broken Crowns And Shattered Thrones // Lee Seokmin // Prince!au

When he first came to you, he had been a prince.

Proud and handsome, so wise but so naive all the same. Though he had once been the pride of the nation, he barely resembled that after the coup swept across the country. Prince Seokmin had appeared at your cottage and asked for your help with fearful eyes, his armour tattered and his skin bruised from the fight for his throne.

“I just need a place to stay and recover,” he’d told you back then. “I vow it won’t be long.”

And yet here he was, joyfully singing beautiful tunes to the enchanted raven you had once accidentally created, gathering herbs from your garden and the woods. It’s been over a year. His armour had been forgotten, hidden at the bottom of a wooden chest, and his bruises had healed, giving way to gorgeous smiles. He’s made himself at home with you, greeting you with a cup of ginger tea in the mornings and sending you off to bed with a soft kiss on the forehead each evening.

You knew there was a part of him that longed for what he’d once had: the throne, the crown, the love of the people. And a part of you wished you could’ve seen him when he was still glorious and powerful and commanded the armies with a flick of his fingers. But the coup had been too powerful to stop. They’d already found and crowned a new king and maybe – you selfishly thought – it was better for Seokmin this way.

Though his once royal self, adorned in jewels and the finest silks, must have been a sight to behold, you liked the Seokmin you saw in your gardens so much more. You had fallen in love with his smile and singing and sweet nature – there was no denying the truth. And as fate would have it, he saw something in you as well. It was during his third month at the cottage that he’d confessed his love for you and for a moment you had seen that same fear in his eyes as on the first day you met, but you had embraced him and the glint of fear never made an appearance again.

Until today.

Startled by something unseen by you, he ran into the cottage with your raven in tow. After slamming the heavy oak door shut, he turned to you and there you saw it again: anxiety, distress, fear.

Before you could even ask what had happened, your raven spoke, “Armed soldiers. Coming this way.”

There were only so many reasons they could’ve come. Witches were exempt from taxes and you had stayed out of trouble your whole life, barely ever even leaving your cottage, so they probably weren’t there for you. But Seokmin? They had every reason to seek him out.

But as you turned to comfort him, to tell him you’d handle it (though you’d never tell him how dark of a magic you’d have to use to protect him), he reached to hold you by the shoulders. Eyes on yours, trembling as they were, he spoke in a tone you could only describe as regal, “Stay here. I won’t let them touch you. It’s me they want.”

The protests on your tongue died as he pressed his lips to yours. And before you could recover, he was already out the door, his sword – kept sharp and polished by a spell you had once found – in hand.

After a moment of shock, you rushed to the door, looking out, ready to go and stand by him. You feared the worst. It must have been former revolutionaries sent to end the previous dynasty’s bloodline. And you could not let that happen, not when he was so dear to you.

What you found outside felt worse though. Your insides were turning and you froze in the doorway as you watched one of the knights reach out a hand holding a golden crown. You vaguely heard their words, begging their prince to come back and take back his throne.

You weren’t sure why it sounded even scarier than your first fear. Why was it that the idea of Seokmin being alive but so far from you, separated by not geography and social class, seemed worse? At least he’d live (but you weren’t so sure you could survive without him).

Seokmin took the crown from the knight, held it in his hand, and your breath got caught in your throat even though you wanted to scream and tell him to stop. This is it, you thought to yourself sorrowfully, this is how I lose him.

You were certain he couldn’t say no – he missed being a prince, you were sure he did. He must have missed the lavish meals, the non-scratchy clothes, warm baths and all the riches in the world. He could find another girlfriend within a day, someone smarter and prettier and less witchy.

A crash sounded. The sound of stones scraping against metal.

Startled by the sound, you awoke from your thoughts and gasped at the sight. He’d thrown the crown at the feet of the knights. His voice boomed between the woods as he spoke, “I have no desire to lead you! Find yourself a new prince.”

The knights tried to argue once more – and it was then that you realised that they must have been arguing, trying to convince him this whole time – but Seokmin raised his sword in a threatening manner. “Leave. Never come here again.”

Though they were greater in numbers, they were too loyal and respectful to fight their prince’s orders. As he lowered his sword, they lowered their heads in a bow before climbing onto their white horses. They left, accompanied by the sound of their swords and armour clinking.

For a moment you saw Seokmin in his royal glory as he had once been – proud and wise and taut with responsibility.

Then his shoulders relaxed and he left out a breath. When he turned to come back, he seemed surprised and even worried to see you there. But then he smiled that warm, bright smile and all worries galloped into the woods, side by side with the knights, going far away from your minds.

When he first came to you, he had been a prince.

But now, in front of you, he was just your Seokmin.
