chihaya envisions the karuta cards in the current queen match laid on the tatami. a vignette fades in, superimposed on the cards, as chihaya recalls a childhood memory. dr. harada looks up at an elementary school chihaya, her hair cropped short, who is holding a stack of karuta cards in both hands.
shinobu, a black haired girl with a mole under her right eye is pictured in profile. she's wearing a light grey kimono embellished with red, white, and pink flowers. she holds a karuta card in her right hand and with her left, she traces her fingers over the card's surface. she has an easy smile and her gaze is peaceful as she looks at the card.
shinobu as a small child is in her elementary school classroom, and the light of the setting sun illuminates her. shinobu looks upward at a karuta card balancing on a light fixture far above her. wind causes the card to flutter down toward her. shinobu's small hands reach for the card, and as we watch the card it trembles; with a flash of light, the scene shifts to the present day and the same card is shown flying away from high school shinobu's outstretched hand. she has successfully taken that card in the queen match opposite her opponent.
