Personally, I always prefer Skyler in her moments of being an antagonist to Walt. In the early seasons when she's trying to catch his secrets. Then later when she is distancing the family from him and sleeping with Ted. Even when she's laundering his money she does it in a way to be difficult to Walt (at certain times).
And when she knows his secret and is laundering her money I think those smaller protests help her distance herself from it. If she can still work in opposition to him it helps her keep the morals that she has started to loose.
But by closer to the end of season 5 she's given up. She's on his side. And it's sad. I think it's a big reason why I prefer her in all the over seasons. Not to say it's bad writing because I don't think it is but seeing Skyler so broken down. Most of her traits have been watered down by Walt's actions. She stands fully on his side, even threatening her sister and brother in law.
This is why the seen in Ozymandias where she fights him is satisfying even if half lived (with Walt stealing the baby).
Season 2 is probably one of the seasons in the show that best highlights the damage that Walt’s empire has on average people. From them no longer using distributers and the episode with the meth parents and the kid.
Jane is probably the most 'memorable ' example of this from the show. Jane initially starts off as a cool girl, Jesse loves her and almost pines for her attention.
But when she relapse her personality is different. She becomes more desperate? Unkempt? In general it takes away her cool. She also becomes more blatantly manipulative with her father and Walt.
And unlike other characters in the show when Jane dies we see how important she is to other characters. The grief her father felt causing him to accidently make a plane crash. The grief Jessie feels for her makes him go to a crack house and go crazy for like a season.
While he didn't actively kill her all his actions and inactions led to her death. With Jane we see a microcosm of Walt's impact to people.
i really do wish i could’ve watched breaking bad before its legacy as having the best ending because it probably set my expectations too high and so while watching the last season i was expecting a lot and while it delivered it wasn’t close the image i had of it
i do think people who separate walt and heisenberg are so weird to me because in my head heisenberg is more a symbol than what walt is
heisenberg is simply how he will be remembered and seen but there isnt any line. even in season 5 where a lot of people think 'heisenberg' has taken over there is a scene while saul and walt are in the disappearing guys bunker where walt tries to do the 'this ends when i say it does' but he fails because he ends up coughing
throughout the show while walt looses his morals he never truly 'becomes heisenberg'
