It took a while for scholars to agree that the painter of this piece was Caravaggio; and even now, the attribution is still disputed by some. Narcissus, with its simple yet balanced composition, is one of just seven mythological works by the artist believed to have survived - according to John Varriano - though the painting still lacks any real narrative.
