my favorite headcannon is that dally is an honorary older brother to ponyboy. just the way he saw mrs. curtis as a mother figure and even took care of pony after his parents' death- he loves that kid and his family.

e.g.

inviting pony to hang out with him after soda told pony he wasn't allowed to hangout with him and steve ("little kids are allowed")

choosing to hang out at the movies after pony was just jumped for going to the movies alone

getting pony food without having to ask if he wanted anything (and theoretically paying for it...)

asking pony if he was freezing and giving him his leather jacket (also lecturing him saying he was going to get pneumonia)

making sure he was safe (risking his own life to get pony out of the church, putting out the fire on his arm, and then lecturing him again at the hospital)

honorary mentions from deleted scenes

asked pony how his milkshake was, and when pony complained, dally tested it out and complained to the worker

told pony to be a good boy after harassing people with paper straw wrappers, and pony replied, "yes, pops 😔"

pony is the youngest and he doesn't always make the best decisions. since soda and darry can't always be there to watch him, dally naturally takes on the older brother role when he's around pony. though he doesn't do it most kindly, the intention is there.

a/n: i saw a post about a cop’s daughter asking if the kid in the back of his police car was cute and it inspired this

-so you guys would definitely meet through your dad

-he’s a cop, a hell of a good one too

-he had many run ins with dally

-over dinner your father grumbling on about him constantly

-“never associated with the likes of dallas winston”

-one night after school, you walked straight to the local police station with your dad’s fast food order in your hand

-he had been standing right in the doorway when you arrived and accepted the bag graciously immediately distracted by his burger and the words of his coworker

-you spotted a boy in a denim jacket sitting in a holding cell, taking a drag

-immediately recognizing him as dallas winston

-you almost cringed at the sight of the bloody boy in the dirty cell

-“found him roughing up the boy down the road” you heard your dad’s partner mutter to him

-he noticed you looking and sent you a sly smirk

-“you should see the other guy”

-his lip bloody and swollen, his eye black and throbbing

-once he was released you ran into him everywhere

-it was almost like it was on purpose

-and it was of course

-dallas had taken a liking towards you: the enemies daughter

-he was quite confident asking you out; no one could resist dallas winston

-well apparently you could

-“oh come on doll, don’t hurt me like this”

-eventually agreeing and letting him take you out even though you knew your father would disapprove

-he unexpectedly took you to a small diner in your neighborhood

-him getting easily distracted by all the options and ultimately decided to get blueberry pancakes even though it was nearing 8 pm

-not letting you pay but also not paying at all

-you made sure to come back the next day and apologize

-and leave a big tip

-he’d definitely steal things for you too

-you felt guilty at first and always made sure to go back and pay for them but eventually gave up on paying and just excepted his ‘borrowed’ gifts

-your friends suspected he’s been rubbing off on you

-waking up at midnight to him banging on your window to let him in

-one summer day you left the window open for some fresh air and woke up to dally crouched on the floor, petting your cat

-he’s literally in love with your cat

-not that he’d admit it

-and all while this is happening your parents still don’t know about him

-knowing you aren’t going to ‘change’ him and loved him for who he was

-him randomly shoving his ring into your hand with no explanation

-“keep this”

-wearing it on a chain because it didn’t fit on your fingers

-him yanking your hair when it’s up because it’s “a sign of endearment”

-hiding your things while you shower

-one time your dad walked into your room while he was over and he had to cram into your closet

-he would definitely try out your makeup while you did your homework

-and he’d rock it

-he would constantly annoy you but that’s the only way he knows how to show affection
