Derrick Eckart - Tumblr Posts
Oh my god, Penny would be trapped with her two biggest abusers. The horror of imagining Gloria Kellen in a position of power over Penny gives me nightmares. As the wife of the heir to the dukedom and since the duke is a widower, it is very likely that the duties of the lady of the house were delegated to her, that is, she would have control over the maintenance of the house, meals, parties and servants. If the servants' willing abuse, tolerated by Derrick, consisted of exquisite rotten meals, toy cutlery, insults, and needle wounds; Now imagine the abuse ordered by Lady Gloria, a girl who risked serving a cup of mosquitoes to a duke's daughter just to envy her beauty and wealth, adding also her jealousy of her husband's attention to her own sister. her. Penny could now wake up with rodent carcasses in her bed and on her plate; if she takes the route of physically harming her, she could order her face to be burned and her hair cut off. Gloria would have her sister-in-law's dresses and jewelry destroyed, especially the ones Callisto gives her, because she can't stand that Penny looks prettier than her or that she has better things. If Penny complained, Derrick, as sick as he is (in addition to possibly having a fetish for dressing Penny in a chaste and simple way, highlighting her vulnerability) would say that his wife's actions were correct because Penny's clothing was inappropriate, He would require her to apologize to Gloria and then punish her with solitary confinement. If they were gifts from Callisto, Derrick would struggle to hide his joy, and would add that Penny should be grateful to Gloria, since it is wrong for a single woman to accept gifts from another man, then he would further punish Penny from meeting with Callisto. Callisto.
Gloria would definitely spend her time organizing dances and tea parties, where Penny would be constantly humiliated and harassed. Every time Penny explodes AND/OR defends herself, Gloria would play the victim, she would pretend that she was nice to Penny by introducing her to her friends or that she was just advising her without wanting to offend her, since Gloria chose all the guests, they would happily join in. to their farce, and would declare how "The Eckarts' crazy bitch" attacked the defenseless Lady Gloria. Derrick, as always, would blame Penelope and punish her with isolation without food or water, the Duke who only listened to his son's words, would foolishly shower her with gifts to buy her silence, and Penny, without anyone bothering to hear her version, would suffer in silence.
My personal headcannon is that the original Penny was actually a tomboy interested in learning to use a crossbow and hunting, despite these being activities not considered suitable for ladies in the Empire, to the point of not having special clothing for women, but rather men's clothing adapted to them. I think Penny might be interested in horseback riding, it would give her a feeling of freedom or get back to practicing with the crossbow. Gloria would bribe a stable boy to not adjust the saddle properly for Penny, causing her to fall, or bribe a knight to hurt Penny with an arrow, when she practiced with her crossbow. Derrick would convince the duke and Reynold that the fall occurred or the arrow got stuck, because Penny was very clumsy in its handling, they would never wonder why the seat also came loose or how Penelope magically managed to make the arrow turn around in its seat. address. Penny would end up deprived again of an activity she really enjoys, Derrick would find the perfect excuse to keep her locked up for his recovery and because he will no longer be able to go out to practice, and Gloria would get a new jewel and the pleasure of hurting her imaginary rival with impunity.
But would she still hold on to Derrick? What happens if she constantly dies as a result of Gloria and Derrick's abuse? Makeup mixed with an illicit substance could kill you, animal carcasses contain dangerous viruses, wounds can become infected and can be fatal, and let's not forget hunger. Being the Eckarts, I don't think a doctor regularly visits Penny. I think that by constantly being reincarnated, Penny would mature, she would realize that all her pain is because of Derrick, he is the puppet master behind Gloria and the servants, she would understand that Derrick's abuse is no different, that her brother is a disgusting degenerate who has raped, imprisoned, abused and manipulated her, just because he cannot accept his guilt for having incestuous feelings for his little sister, nor let her have a life without him. He has deprived her of her freedom, even allowing her to be accused of killing the crown prince, only to make her his sexual slave, he is a monster.
If Penny clings to one person, it's Callisto, he has the status to punish Derrick and Gloria, and enough intelligence and common sense not to fall for her lies.

Headcanon that Derrick and Lady Kellen were engaged in the og timeline.
My reasons for why this couple would make sense:
Gloria Kellen seems to be respected among the noble ladies and of marriageable age. For someone like her who is not from a notable family, Derrick is quite the catch as he is the firstborn son and future head of the Eckart duchy. It's not uncommon to break off an engagement if another suitor has appeared who can offer more power and wealth than the previous one, after all marriage back then was not based on love, most marriages were political arrangements. We also do not know how the Hunting arc was resolved in the og timeline. Her fiance Baron Tulitte might have been executed by Callisto for the assassination attempt, imprisoned or incapitated in a similar way as he is now, which would make a marriage with him disadvantageous.
The Duke had to give a diamond mine to Lady Kellen's family as compensation after Penelope threatened her with a crossbow. Through a marriage Derrick could retake possession of the diamond mine and avoid that further incidents involving Penelope could escalate into a family feud.
Similarity attracts. They are both arrogant people who abused Penelope and thought her inferior because of her lowborn background. Unlike Emily, rather than physical violence Gloria uses manipulations and subtle insults to agitate Penelope. Another thing they have in common is that Gloria and Derrick both criticize Penelope for how she used to be dressed. Lastly Derrick has the tendency to mask his attraction to Penelope by hurting her in the worst ways. Exchanging vows with the woman who ostracized Penelope in high society is something that Derrick might do. As his feelings for og Penelope deepen, he would become more desperate to escape them. Did I mention that the wiki states Gloria is around Penelope's age?
Thanks for answering my question. When I read both the novel and the manwha, I was struck by Derrick's level of power over Penelope, I am an only child and I don't know much about society in ancient times, but even with that, I felt that it was abnormal for an older brother to control more the life of his little sister, than the father. It makes sense that Derrick, due to his competition and the Duke's depression, was delegated the care of his siblings, which explains why Reynold and Original Penelope were so immature, a boy of barely eighteen years old, raised them. In Penelope's case it was worse, because her caregiver had incestuous feelings for her, and she dealt with them, verbally abusing her and allowing the servants to mistreat her. What scares me the most about Penny's situation is how realistic she can be. A father falls into deep depression, neglecting his children, someone within the family takes the reins, the grateful father, feeling that this member is more capable than himself, gives him a lot of powers over the children. With all that power, that family member begins to sexually abuse one of the children and takes advantage of the father's depression to make his victim believe that his father is not going to protect or believe him. That happens in the Eckart family, the duke confused his eldest son's administrative ability with aptitude to be a father, and gave him the responsibility of raising Reynold and then Penelope, ignoring the clear signs that Reynold was not well, an example of That every day is his abuse of Penelope. Let's remember that Reynold, even as an adult, continued to behave like a playground bully, clearly having enormous maturity and frustration control problems. That boy needed his father to teach him manners and how to treat his little sister. Not his distant brother, who if you looked closely, he was even worse mentally than his brother. Penelope got the worst of it, in my opinion, she was like Reynold, she lacked maturity and control of certain impulses, but she also had to endure mistreatment from the servants and her brothers. Derrick harassed her, looking for any excuse to punish her and keep her in her mansion, despite Penelope's supposed bad personality and immaturity, the only confirmed incident before Ivonne's arrival was the tea with mosquitoes. Besides that, the worst thing Penelope did was lash out at the maids when they brought her rotten food. Derrick obviously saw the food, but since he wanted to punish Penelope for the feelings he felt for her, he used it as an excuse to make her suffer more. hunger and keep her locked up. If when he practiced crossbow with Eckles is a sign, it is possible that if Penelope interacted with men, Derrick would make scenes like that, embarrassing her. Thanks to that, Penelope was unable to develop friendships, something that abusers always seek is to isolate the victim from her, something that Derrick worked hard for. That sick man was willing to condemn Penelope for her ridiculous accusation of having tried to kill the crown prince, just to keep her as a sexual slave. Honestly, it's not surprising that most of Penelope's deaths occur before Layla arrives. If Derrick started sexually abusing her, I'm sure the Duke would be the last to notice her, if Penny is lucky.
How the hell does Derrick have so much authority over Penelope? Something I never understood was how it was possible that Derrick, being only the eldest brother, could grant harsh punishments such as feeding his younger sister bread and water or restricting her mobility, without even consulting his father, the Duke. Clearly they have given me more power than a simple brother should have in my opinion, I am an only child so I don't know much about sibling dynamics, but it seems strange to me that Derrick has more influence in Penelope's life than her own father at the point. That when she is arrested, he is the one who goes to visit her. Don't you think that in a situation like this the legal guardian should go?
what is an elder brother if not a second absent father? From the start Derrick seemed to me more like an abusive guardian than an elder brother. His actions towards Penelope were never those of a brother towards a sister. Their relationship was not sibling like. In a similar manner I don't view Reynold and Derrick's relationship as very brotherly. It might have been different once. Before Ivonne disappeared. He helped Reynold and Ivonne sneak out to visit the festival, didn't he? Disobeying his father, that doesn't sound like something the Derrick we know would do. But something in Derrick must have changed after he lost his little sister and made him crave control.
Their relationship would be more comparable to a guardian and ward. I hesitate to call it parentification, because Derrick absolutely did not meet the emotional needs of Reynold and Penelope (he probably barely interacted with Penelope) but I do think he took to some degree care of Reynold in a way their father failed them. I believe he had to grow up too early and that his childhood was cut short given the fact that he had to be prepared to become the next head of the Eckart duchy and their father had likely fallen into a depression after experiencing the loss of his most treasured child. Perhaps Derrick wanted to share his father's burden and offered to take on some of his tasks. Such tasks may have also included looking after the children that the duke was neglecting over his grief at Ivonne's disappearance. Making sure Reynold doesn't stray away from the right path and gets in trouble, being in charge of punishments for minor offenses that he considers too unimportant to bother his father about, ironing out his mistakes, overseeing his education, budgeting etc. You can see where I'm going with this: Derrrick was a person of authority in Reynold's life (hc). And I think that's how he became easily a person of authority in Penelope's life as well. If Derrick did his role so well with Reynold then this could explain why the Duke entrusted him with Penelope. Though I suspect that most often the Duke had no idea what kind of punishments Derrick was handing out to Penelope. I can imagine that at the start Derrick was asking his father for permission for every little thing that eventually the Duke just handed a share of his power over to Derrick. And when he noticed that Derrick acted independently he found that it had a positive impact on their family interests, which caused him to have a little bit too much trust in Derrick's judgement without checking.
Unusual circumstances forced Derrick into the role of the little Duke to support his father and unconsciously everyone around him started to get used to it. Derrick gaining more power over his siblings than he should have wasn't seen as something weird, because he was a precocius child and already preparing to follow into his father's footsteps as the next Duke anyway. Everyone else was so busy searching for Ivonne or offering their condolences, they had forgotten completely that they still had two other children in the house which were in need of parental care.
In my opinion part of the reason had to do with their father's mental state and inability to act as a guardian, part was Derrick's overqualification in certain fields that made people trust him to take on tasks that they would not have given other kids his age typically, part was that his status as the Eckart heir lifted him above his siblings and he would enjoy certain privileges that were connected to serious responsibilities in the future that neither of his siblings would have to fullfill. I think Penelope's gender also played a major role given that they were living in a patriarchy where the domination of women through their male relatives and spouses was normalized. The story is set in a historically western inspired world but the author herself is Korean. It is possible that some Confucian ideas of filial piety still made it into the text.

Lastly there was the underlying idea that Penelope had to prove herself worthy of the Eckart name. If Derrick's treatment of her was that of a master to his servant or a noble to a commoner instead of a brother to his sister or a nobleman to a noblewoman then it was condoned because no one viewed Penelope as an Eckart except for her stepfather. The staff acted under the assumption that Penelope was living there temporary and would be thrown away once the true lady had returned. Even if some of them had objections they were in no position to voice them. Only very few would intervene in other people's family affairs.
As for why Derrick went to visit Penelope in prison instead of his father: plot related reasons. Love interests are generally given more screentime than side characters such as parents. Penelope's situation also wouldn't have looked that bleak if instead of her brother her father had come. Unlike Derrick the Duke would have shown that he cared. Besides the scene of Penelope trapped behind bars was important, it was meant to parallel the bird in the cage that Derrick gifted her and would serve as a hint that Derrick's desire for Penelope was dark and possessive.
I can also imagine that their father was doing paperwork, looking for a good lawyer or meeting with influencial people and trying to negotiate better conditions for Penelope in the meantime.
Penelope: AAAAAAHHHHHHHH
Reynold: Derrick, do you hear that?
Derrick: Reynold, I feel that.
Reynold: *Screams* Penelope: *Screams louder to assert dominance* Yvonne: Should we do something?! Derrick, observing: No, I want to see who wins this.
I finished the novel so I made memes to fill the void ~ part 1
Spoiler for the novel and side stories!

Part 2
Part 3
Mermaid Au
All characters are mermaids, no humans. Mermaids in this Au eat fish and have claws for hunting. They live in underwater caves called dens. They usually live in big pods of over 10 mermaids for protection but some choose to have smaller groups. They also have claws, sharp teeth, and powerful jaws for hunting the sea life. Males are usually much bigger than females and are more aggressive but females can hold their own against them. Mermaids also have fins where their ears go.
Penelope has a dark green tail and fins Callisto has a blood-red tail and fins
When she was young Penelope's mother died from injuries sustained from a killer whale attack and a lack of resources leaving Penelope to fend for herself.
The Duke who was looking for Yvonne after she was separated from them found Penelope and took her in. Reynold and Derrick were not happy about this and never fully accepted her into the pod. As such, she was seen as an outcast in the group and always given smaller portions of their hunt so she sneaked out to go hunt for herself.
She found a nice little cave to eat in whenever she wants alone time a good distance from where the Eckharts reside. One day when coming back from a successful hunt she is attacked by an injured merman.
Callisto is the strongest in his group as well as the best hunter. His father is the group leader who is in charge of protecting them. He was very unhappy with his father for taking another mate right after his mother passed. And his stepmother wanted to get rid of him.
She had his father send him to hunt in an area filled with hostile mermen who were kicked out for being too aggressive. He killed them though but he got injured during the fight. He couldn't go back to his group yet because the smell of blood would attract other predators. So he sought refuge in a cave. The same cave Penelope frequents.
Penelope was dragging her still alive prey, an octopus to her cave so she can eat it in peace. It took her a great deal of time to catch because of how slippery they are. Callisto heard her coming assumed she was an enemy and attacked, only to let her go once he realized she was harmless. Penny still fought back though.
During their little scuffle Penelope's prey got away, she was very mad about it, octopus is her favorite. Callisto did apologize about it though but she didn't want to hear it, not only was he in her spot but he was the reason her food got away.
To make it up to her he offered to catch something for her instead but she declined more interesting in why he was there in the first place. So he explains the series of events that lead him here. Penelope is horrified as the area he's talking about is not far from her cave.
But she is madder than someone is invading her safe spot, so when Callisto mentions that he's staying till his injuries heal, she goes out to get medicine to heal him with the logic that the sooner he is healed, the sooner he will leave. He is very taken aback since nobody but his mother ever did something like this for him, so he lets her.
Even when he eventually leaves, he keeps coming back to the cave to see her. But because they don't want anyone from their group to find out they both go to the cave at different times. He even brings her food which quickly silenced any objections she had. Completely unknown to Penelope, Callisto was actually courting her by offering food and leaving her other gifts. He was planning on finding her during mating season to take her as his mate.
This became the new normal for them, sneaking off to their little cave until they were found out. Derrick had begun to notice Penelope sneaking off, not only that but she was gaining weight. He did not think much of it until he notice the smell of an unknown male on her. He was pissed, he never liked her since she was brought into their group thinking she could never fill the void felt when Yvonne went missing. And now she was sneaking off to go galivant with an unknown male and was probably pregnant (she was not, it was from all the prey Callisto gave her).
The next time Penelope snuck out he followed her from a distance to see what she was really doing. Unknown to him that Reynold was also following him, having noticed Derrick's weird behaviour when looking at Penelope. Reynold knew she's been sneaking off for years now but never thought much of it since she was never gone for long so he thought whatever she was doing was harmless. So he was kind of alarmed when he noticed Derrick following her knowing nothing good will come of it.
Penelope is none the wiser about being followed and reaches the cave first. Derrick upon reaching the cave notices that the smell of the unknown merman is all over the area and assumes this is his den.
He gets confronts her about it right there. Penelope is obviously terrified, she's always been scared of Derrick he was always openly hostile towards her from the very beginning even more as they grew up. Now he's found her only safe space and he knows about her meeting, someone. He's getting angrier and has her cornered now.
The only thing she can do now is trying to get him away from the cave in case Callisto shows up. He may get the wrong idea and blindly attack. Knowing him it could end in bloodshed given both of their personalities.
Luck however was not on her side cause Callisto does show up. Neither of them noticed him because he came through the kelp. He heard Penelope talking to someone and she sounded scared which was alarming as no one else was supposed to be there. Just as he comes into view Derrick suddenly grabs her digging his claws into her skin.
Seeing that he was going to hurt her Callisto attacks him. Knocking Derrick away catching him by surprise and putting himself between him and Penny. Who is officially freaking out, this is going to end very badly. The two males were going to rip each other to shreds and there was nothing she could do.
As if the gods heard her pray Reynold showed up and he and Penelope were able to separate the two males before they could mortally wound one another. Once that is done Penelope tries to convince Callisto to leave to calm the situation. He doesn't want to leave her but knows staying would only make things so he complies with a promise that she'll be ok.
She goes to the brothers where Reynold is still holding back Derrick. Derrick breaks free from Reynold and begins dragging her back to the dens, once there he keeps her trapped in an unused cave on the outskirts of the dens as punishment.
For weeks she stayed there locked if Reynold had not come around every day to feed her she would have starved. Even the Duke barely came to visit her, he didn't even ask for her side of the story only to scold her for meeting an unknown merman.
She would have stayed there longer but they had to migrate to the tropics for mating season. Penelope would have been left behind if Reynold didn't plead with their father to let her out and take her with them. Knowing that the other mermaids in their pod would not feed her when they're gone. the Duke agrees to let her go but she had trouble keeping up with them because she hasn't been outside. So Reynold carried her the entire way.
Mermaids go to the tropics to warmer waters for mating season. It's very common for various pods of mermaids to meet up there to find a mate. Their a little less hostile to each other as they tend to breed with other mers from different pods to prevent inbreeding. Some mermaids even leave their group to join their new mates or break off to start their own.
Penelope was looking forward to it because there was a chance that Callisto was going to be there. He had mentioned it briefly months before the location of the breeding grounds. They finally arrive after a week of constant swimming, there were other pods there already but Callisto was nowhere in sight.
Disappointed she heads back to the den she picked out. Mermaids don't stay with their pods when on the breeding grounds to encourage mingling with others. Plus mers often leave their pods to form their own when they get a mate.
The next day all the females were mingling together to prepare for the day, and the males were out hunting. Mating usually starts when at least one female goes into heat triggering all the others to go into heat as well. This is due to many generations of mermaids mating in warmer waters, their bodies subconsciously know that they are going to mate and prepare accordingly. So it's important that all females group together to ensure that they all go into heat, then they go into their dens and wait for a male they like and invite them in.
Around midday is when things started to kick in, by then all the mermaids had gone into their den and the mermen had returned from hunting. Penelope just wanted to remain unbothered, still sad about the fact that she hasn't seen Callisto in months.
Her heat was starting to take over, and everything was starting to burn. It seemed more intense with all the pheromones wafting around the water. Instincts taking over she cries out for a male to give her relief, and a hand reaches out to touch her. Surprised, she lashes out to claw its owner only to stop when she sees who it belonged to.
Callisto had travelled day and night to get to the mating grounds in time. His stepmother had struck again, this time she sent him to an area infested with orcas. He had to lead them on a wild goose chase for two days just so they'd lose interest in him. By the time he got by to the area, his pod lives in they were gone.
He kept swimming till he reached the mating grounds, praying that he wasn't too late. That Penelope had not chosen another male as her mate. His witch stepmother had tried again to get rid of him, sending him straight into a gang of orcas.
By the time he got back to his home, his pod had already set off to the mating grounds. Luckily he arrived just as the mermen were coming back from hunting. He recognized Reynold from before and with relief realized the Penelope was somewhere on the grounds.
The only problem was, that the mating ground are massive and the caves there were hidden in the seaweed. Giving its inhabitants some much-needed privacy for what they're doing. So the only thing he could do was swim about listening for her call.
Finally, he found her in a small cave similar to the one they shared all those months ago. She was just as beautiful as he remembered her. She had lost weight but that could be taken care of later.
Penelope was stunned, she was beginning to accept that she may never see him again after months of not knowing if he is alive. Without hesitation, she pulls him into her den where they spent the rest of the season.
Once the mating season was done the mers either went back to their pods or broke off to join another pod. Penelope and Callisto were the latter joining a group of other mers whom they met over the season and finally getting away from their awful families.
Months later Penelope and two other females suddenly disappeared. Callisto was obviously worried until an elder female reassured him that they would be back in a few weeks. True to her word, Penelope all came back safe and sound her own little surprise in her arms.
When a mermaid is expecting she eats twice her amount than usual to make up for the final trimester where she leaves the pods to give birth in a secluded area. Her fellow mermaids will also go with her to provide support and help in the birthing process and watch out for intruders. Once they give birth they stay a couple more days to nurse their pup before introducing them to their mate and the pod.
So to say Callisto was ecstatic to find out his mate had given birth to their pup would be an understatement. His daughter was so tiny she didn't even fit into both of his large hands.
I feel like at some point in their time together the male leads have contemplated putting Penelope on a leash when out in public. because homegirl be wandering away from them getting into all sorts of trouble.
They've definitely got a bunch of mini-heart attacks when they take their eyes off her for barely 5 seconds only to look back and find her gone.
🎃👻Halloween🎃👻
For some odd reason, the main cast finds themselves in a haunted house/escape room scenario. They have to solve puzzles to progress deeper into the building in order to get out.
Not even half an hour in, everybody has concluded that they need to put a leash on Penelope. Because homegirl just keeps disappearing under their noses at random intervals looking for clues or flat out walking away from them in plain sight to investigate something else.
I imagine that if Penelope was in a horror movie she would be the first to run when shit gets spooky. Like, the group is looking around the room trying to solve the puzzle when something moves on its own and Penelope becomes an Olympic track star. She already had to deal with death flags she was not gonna deal with ghosts.
