Little Town
One-shot
Raina walked to the football field with her gym bag hanging on her shoulder, Coach Taylor looked up from his clipboard.
“Your late, Harrison.” He went back at his clipboard marking her present as she set her bag on the bleachers, “Sorry, coach.” She mumbled walking past him to join the rest of the team.
“Hey, you good?” Coach Taylor stopped her, “Yeah, I’m fine.” Eric Taylor watched as she walked away from him as she stood next to Landry.
“Alright, let get started.”

“As we are in our third quarter of the big game, folks and the Panthers and visitors are tied! can they win this game?” The Spokesman says as they watch from the tower, Raina shook her leg anxiously as she sat on the bench. Couch Taylor looked back every now and then to see her look back at the bleachers, Eric looks towards one of his players.
“Lance, get your ass over here.” He whistled as Landry jogged over, “Yeah, coach?” He asked out of breathe wiping sweat from his face.
“What’s wrong with Harrison?” He asked keeping his eyes on the field, Landry looked back at his friend and back at his coach, “No idea, couch. ” he shrugged, Eric looked away from the field glaring at Landry.
“This is not the time to bullshit me, Clarke. We are almost to our last quarter of our game and I need all my best players out there.” Landry scrunched up his face as Eric scowl him.
“She kill me if I told. ” he said, Eric looked at at Raina as she had her face in her hands, he faced back at the field, “Look at the field, Lance.” Landry looked confused at his coach request, so he slowly turned his back away from Raina and the crowd.
“Is it bad?” He said folding his arms as he focus on the game, “Sir-” Landry starts.
“I’m not asking as your coach, I’m asking as a teacher whose worried about one of their students.” Landry signed.
“She got in an argument with her uncle, and that all she would tell me.” He said, Eric nodded before patting Landry on the back.
“That’s all I need to know. “ he said walking away, Landry watched as Coach Taylor walked up to his wife and whispered in her ear before both turning to look at Raina.
“I’m dead.” He said whispered to himself as he runs back on the field.
Raina looks up as Eric called her, “Yeah, coach.”
“I’m putting you in.” He said well writing on his clipboard making Raina sighed trying come up with an half ass excuse, only to be shut down, “This is not up for discussion, grab your helmet.” He walked away calling the team. Raina rolled her eyes going to grab her helmet, she looked backed at the bleachers trying to find either her aunt or uncle but coming up empty. She sighed putting her helmet on and standing with the rest of the team.
“We are in the fourth quarter of the game, Starting running back Smash Williams snapped the ball to quarterback Matt Saracen, who handed off to fullback Raina Harrison, who sweep around left end. Passing it to Tim Riggins capping a six-and-a-half-minute drive with the game-winning touchdown pass with 23 seconds remaining.” The crowd roared as Tim made the touchdown, Raina took her helmet as she watched the team celebrate. She made her way off the field trying not to be notice by anyone, she makes her way into the girls locker room.
Eric watched as Raina leave, he makes his way through the crowd of people towards his wife.
Raina threw her helmet against the lockers, she took in deep breathe. She smashed her fist against the wall repeatedly until her felt numb.
“Raina?” Raina spin around to face Tami Taylor, “ Is everything okay?” Raina wiped her face from the tears.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t they be.” She shrug taking a seat on the bench, Tami walked closer taking a seat next to her, “ Beside from your bloody knuckles..’ Raina quickly hide her hands as she folded her arms, “ And the way you been acting all day, I say you didn’t have a good day.” she watched as Raina frowned,
“You want to talk about it?”
“Its nothing, just stupid family drama. You wouldn’t understand”
“I think I know a think or two about family drama.” Tami gave Raina a sweet smile but sad smile. Raina didn’t know what to say to that she always thought the Taylor family was one of those happy families you see on tv, Raina looked down wondering if she should tell what's been happening at home.
“You don’t have to tell me now, we can just sit here if you like.” She adjust her purse as she got comfortable in her seat, Raina or Tami said a word. They just sat there in comfortable silence.
“Do you think there’s more to life than football?” Raina asked the burning question hat been nagging her for days, Tami thought for a minute.
“I don’t think so, why do you asked.”
“Because that’s how my uncle feels, football was his whole life back in the day so it has to be mines too.”
“ I’m sure he didn’t mean it like that.”
“He said and I quote the only way your leaving Dillion is with a football scholarship other than that you never leaving this place. “ Raina looking at Tami, “And I think he might be right.” she said rubbing the tears from her eyes.
“Raina-”
“Raina, oh sweetheart.” Raina and Tami looked up to see Ellie rushing in, “Aunt Ellie” Raina met her half way hugging her.
“ I’m sorry. I missed your game.” Ellie pulled away from the hug and gasp when she looked at her hands, “What happened to your hands?” Ellie looked worried at her niece.
“It’s not a big deal, I’m fine.” Ellie ran her thumb over her bruised knuckles.
“Really I’m fine i was just got a little frustrated that’s all.” Raina said.
“Rani I told you countless times how that’s not healthy for your hands.” She scowled softly.
“I know I’m sorry, today wasn’t my day. ” Ellie looked at Tami and back at Raina.
“We talked about it when we get home.” She whispered and Raina nodded.
“I’ll walked you guys out.” Tami said walked up to them, “Hold on, I have to change first.” Tami and Ellie looked back at her.
“Alright we be outside.” Raina watched as they left, she went to a locker and got her gym bag and went to a empty stall.
Raina walked out into the hallways and looked around, she got her phone out of her bag to see missed messages from Landry and Ellie. She was looking through her messages when she bumped into Jason, “Hey, Raina.” He smiled rolling up to her.
“Hey, Jason. We missed you at practice. ” She said stopping in front of him.
“Yeah, i had to go in for a check up.” Raina nodded trying not glance at his wheelchair, “Lucky nothing is completely broken, but I would have to be benched for the rest of the season. ” Raina nodded feeling sorry for Jason, she and Jason never talked or hanged out with each other in their 17 years of growing up in Dillion. They had nothing in common, he’s a football star well she’s a outcast, they really didn’t have a reason to talked even after she joined the team, they never had a conversation until now.
“That’s sucks, I don’t know how we survive without.”
“I’m not hanging up my shoulder pads just yet, Coach Taylor offer me the position as assistant coach, just until I get feeling back in my legs.”
“Wow do the team know yet?” Jason looked sheepishly at her.
Raina giggled making Jason smile, “The boys are gonna have a field day with this one.” She said making Jason chuckled.
“Yeah. ”he said rubbing his neck sheepishly.
“When do you start, just so I can have my popcorn ready when all hell break loose. ” she smiled.
“He said I start Monday.”
“Yikes.”
“Yeah.” He said stressed.
“Hey don’t sweat it, they listen to you. Your their captain they follow you to the depth of hell if you ask them too. ” she assure him.
“Thanks...” he ran his hand through his hair nervously, “Hey, Raina. Are you-” before he can finished her phone buzzed alerting her.
“Hold that thought.” He nodded as she flipped her phone opened, she glared at her phone angrily before snapping it shut.
“Everything’s alright.” Jason asked worried.
“Yeah my aunt and uncle are just waiting outside.” She said.
“Oh I walked you out.” She thanked him as she adjust her bag as they both walked to the end of the hall, “what was you going to ask me?” She remembered him making Jason panic a little inside.
“Uhhh if your going to the party at Tim’s house later.” He said
“Yeah no I’m not really much a party girl...” she said opening the door for Jason.
“Wasn’t you the keg queen for four years straight?” He said grinning.
“No, i think your confusing me with someone else..” She chuckled.
“Why don’t you ever go to Tim’s parties, I see you at every party in Dillion except Tim’s or Layla’s?” Raina goes quite as she plays with one of her braids, “Don’t take this to heart, Jason. But I can tolerate a lot of thing but a drunk Tim and Layla is not one of them.” She said watching everyone get into their cars.
“Hmm.”
She looked at him seeing the wheels turned in his head, “Don’t worry, Street. Your not on my hit list...yet.” She grin making him smiled back at her.
Raina and Jason looked across the parking lot at Tim as he pressed down on the wheel repeatedly, Layla sat in the passenger seat with her hand over her face embarrassed, “JASON! Come on, man. We gonna be late.” He shouts trying to get his friend attention, she rolled her eyes before looking at Jason.
“Looks like you are wanted, see you around Jason. “ she says
“See ya” she gave him a wave before watching Jason roll off towards his friend’s car.
“Raina.” she turned towards her uncle voices as he walked up to her, “What was taking you so long, me and your aunt are waiting.”
“I guess I lost track of time, my bad.” she mumbled walking away from him, “Rani..” she kept walking not wanting to start another argument.
“Rani, wait” he said standing in front of him making her stop, “ I’m sorry, for what I said this morning. It wasn’t suppose to come out like that-”
“Really? You couldn’t fool me.” Sam tried to contain his hurt as he continue to speak, “You may think I meant it but I didn’t.”
“Then why say it knowing how I feel about it.” she said angry
“Because your step closer to graduating, and you gonna be making a lot of choices on your own and I know how you always wanted to leave Dillon but the world out there isn’t like Dillon. It’s more cruel and I can’t be there to protect you, when things don’t go as plan and that’s scare the hell out of me.” Raina soften.
“I didn’t know you felt that way.”
“I’m pretty sure every father feels that way about their daughter.” Raina rubs her eyes as Sam called her his daughter, sometimes she forget how nice it is to be consider their family.
“Hey go head to the truck, I need to make a phone car, alright.” Raina nodded.
She walked towards the truck seeing Ellie and Tami talking, Raina frowned confused stopping as she saw Ellie face scrunched up and moving her hands around frantically, she only do that when she’s pissed, “What’s wrong?” Raina looked at her uncle from the side.
“Aunt Ellie looks pissed.” Sam looked at his wife, “ Did you forget to lock the garage door again?” she said making Sam roll his eyes.
“No..” Raina looked towards her uncle as he look deep in thought making her chuckled, “You forgot didn’t you old man.” Sam smirked shaking his head.
“No I didn’t because Ellie was the last one to leave the house, so she not angry at me.”
“Well she can’t be mad at me, than again I did up and leave with out telling her.” they both stood there quietly as they saw her face and ears turning red , “ Maybe if we move slowly backwards, she probably won’t notice us.” Raina suggested.
“Good idea.” they slowly turned around trying not to be seen my Ellie, “ SAMUEL AINSLEY STEELE.” she shouted across the parking causing some people to look at them, “Full name, your dead.”
“Tell me about it.” They both walked up to the truck to greet, “Raina get into the truck.” Without a word she went to the passenger seat and sat in the middle, she watched as Ellie shouted at Sam. She felt her phone buzz in her pocket.
“hello?” she pick it up not looking at the id caller as she watched her uncle try to calm down Ellie , “hey, Rai.” she rolled her eyes.
“What you want, Riggins.” he chuckled through the phone, she can hear the music playing in the background, “I just wanted to know what you up too, I’m having a party why don’t you come by.”
“I’ll pass.” she replied looking at her slowly aunt calm down, “Why not? Everybody’s here even Landry is here and seems like he enjoying himself.”
“Well, good for him but the answer is still no.”
“Come on, you been ignoring me all week...” he said frustrated, Raina took a quick glanced at her uncle and aunt still talking before focusing on her bruise hand, “Raina? Raina, are you listening to me?”
“Yeah, I heard you.” she mumbled, Tim scoffed over the phone, “Really? What did I say?”
“...”
“Like I thought.”
“Tim I’m not in the mood to give you a happy ending, okay? Why don’t you ask Tyra or maybe Lyla. I heard she gives a great handy.”
“What the hell is wrong with you.”
“Nothing, I’m just sayin how I see it.”
“What the hell is that suppose to mean” he growls
“I’m just saying I wasn’t the one making out with Layla a few feet away from Jason’s hospital room.”
“How did you know about that..” he whisper
“It’s a small town, Timothy. People talk.” She said looking up watching her aunt and uncle make their way towards the car, “I would say it’s always a pleasure talking to you, Riggins. But that be a lie.” she snapped her phone shut as Ellie and Sam got in the car.
“Sorry for the wait sweetie, me and your uncle had something we needed to clear up.” she said glaring at Sam, as he started the car, “ It’s alright.” Sam pulled out the school parking lot onto the road,
“Who was on the phone.”
“Just Landry.” She said, Sam didn’t question any further as he focus on getting them home. Raina leaned her head on Ellie’s shoulder falling asleep.
