Donna Noble And The Plucky Young Man Who Helps Her Out - Tumblr Posts - Page 3
A Comment: Love how they keep the Doctor and Donna so platonic! It keeps the shippers away!
Me: It’s cute that you think that.
This is lovely. Totally what I loved about them as well <3 I was so captivated by their potential for a truly mature relationship. Also they just. Have fun together. Which is so underrated in romantic relationships (or shipping, or whatever.)
*it's past midnight here and I'm getting a sudden urge to write an essay on why I ship doctordonna romantically*
So it seems that general fandom still insists on them being platonic, besties, brotp etc. And I'm fine with that, people have the right to interpret fictional characters any way they like. But! Ten and Donna were the first non-canon couple I have ever shipped. Like, ever. I have never understood the thrill of shipping characters. But these two made me go "NO, this is WRONG, they belong together!" Of course, I blame the absolutely incredible chemistry between David and Catherine (and it only seems to intensify with time, which is even better!) But as for the general fandom perception... I remember seeing a post here a few days ago, which I can't find again, but somebody said something along the lines "maybe they are not so shippable (is that even a word or am I *in Donna's voice* Just Saying Things?) because they are the same age and look the same age, and if Catherine were 20, people would ship the hell out of it". But for me that's the whole point! Because we - women who are not in their 20s anymore - need representation too, and need to be portrayed as desirable. We need to be the love interest. Btw, that's probably why I'm not a fan of doctordonna fanart showing them as cute-babylike-chibi creatures (not a fan of the style in general, although I know some people like it and that's fine etc). But I love that the Doctor and Donna look like actual adults! They have wrinkles, their jawlines are sagging a bit and so on. And there's no need to pretend those things are not there. That's how humans (well... Time Lords and Ladies too, apparently) look and it's beautiful.
And finally, the friendship thing. I really do appreciate friendship, I believe it is very important by itself. But also that it is the foundation of a long-term term mature loving relationship. And Doctor and Donna fit that narrative perfectly - well, in my head, anyway. On a more personal note, I somehow managed to end up being in love with a person who only saw me as a friend twice in my life. (Those were two different people, obviously. Lol) It took me about ten years to move on from the second story. So I guess imagining the Doctor and Donna ending up together and not just friends is my way of dealing with that trauma.
So yeah. It's all personal in the end. But that's why we need fiction and fictional characters, right?

We’re so not married.
one of the best/funniest dynamics on TV is: (in/sp)
❝Sometimes in life, you find a special friend. Someone who changes your life just by being part of it. Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop. Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. When you’re down and the world seems dark and empty, your forever friend lifts you up in spirit and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full. Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times and confused times. If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows. If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on. Your forever friend hold your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay. And if you find such a friend, you feel happy and complete because you need not worry. You have a forever friend, and forever has no end. ❞
Writing more Ten pining after oblivious Donna:
I’m not jealous, the Doctor reminded himself for the umpteenth time as Donna continued to flirt with the prince of Garinae. Jealousy is a petty emotion and as a Donna’s best friend I am above such petty emotions. I am happy she’s enjoying herself with this upper-class twit. Happy. Definitely.
(Subtext: Certainly not me.)
“No man’s ever going to be good enough for my Donna.”
— The 10th Doctor
Found on my dash when I woke up this morning.
“She wasn’t doing a thing that I could see, except standing there leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together.”
— J. D. Salinger, “A Girl I Knew”
Oh, god, the Ten/Donna feels. The way that Donna thinks she’s nothing, thinks that she’s no one, and she’s everything, both to the universe and to the Doctor.
I imagine this is how he sees her.
Rewatching The Runaway Bride like:
Look at these two
totally platonic
friends
Valid, but he definitely confesses on accident because he literally cannot help making a complete idiot out of himself where Donna is concerned.
She takes the opportunity to agree to a date, but only out of pity, of course.
The thing about romantic Tendonna is that it's not that I don't think it's impossible and also do what u want for shipping. I DO however think it's impossible that they would actually get together as a couple because they're both the most horrifically stubborn and dedicated to the bit people in the universe. They would be playing attraction chicken and first one to even float the idea of changing their relationship to something non platonic loses. Where a normal couple would have mutual pining they have mutual spite 💖.
And of course whatever “date” they try to go ends in horrible disaster, and she’s NOT going to let him get away with that so they’ll have to have another date… no, a do-over where it’ll work out properly. Because they are NOT going on multiple dates, just do-overs because trouble is always interrupting them. That’s all.

They wink at each other while exchanging vows and can barely keep from bursting out laughing. Their friends and family are convinced they are in love, when they are so obviously NOT. Truly a hilarious ruse.
They do love an inside joke, so they make darn sure that everyone else thinks they are in love while it’s their private secret that they are truly, completely platonic. And if sometimes they keep up the couple act when there’s no one else around, well that’s just part of the joke. Really.
