After Holden and Dorothea's dinner date, it was time to celebrate Holden's adult birthday. He barely spent time with his family due to his work, so he wanted an intimate party - with only his daughters and wife to celebrate the day of his birth.
They took a bunch of pictures that day, unaware that this would be one of the few moments they would spend together as a happy, complete family.

Dorothea is in labor, and Holden is ecstatic! There is no better birthday gift than the birth of his son - well, technically, it was a day after his birthday. But still, they were having a baby today!

All is well in the Montgomery household. Both Holden and Dorothea are comfortably compatible with each other, but perhaps this too-good-to-be-true comfort has made her question if maybe he had been hiding his own infidelity, that maybe his "business trips" are too frequent, too long.
But how could he? When he is so enamoured with her. And how could she doubt him? When her own insecurities should have been his? After all, she is the one who is entertaining and meeting the advances of her sister's husband.

For days, Dorothea wallowed in self-pity and fear. Her husband was coming home tomorrow just in time for their son's birthday. She was so sure that Delilah had snitched on her, so she hadn't called or messaged him.
For the first time in years, Dorothea was afraid.
Yet he said nothing but words of love and affirmation to her. Does that mean he knows nothing? Or did he know but he simply refused to confront it?
For now, she kept mum and watched as he played with Bella. It wasn't the time for that. For now, it was time to celebrate Edel's birthday.

By the time he arrives home from work, she has long dozed off. And by the time she rises from the bed, his side of the bed has lost the warmth of its owner. How long has it been since he had last held her? Since she had last kissed him?

And when they are finally together in the same room, awake and warm, all they do is fight and argue. Why is he always working late? Why aren't you at home during the weekends? Why aren't you here? Are you cheating on me? He's working. He's busy. He's stressed all the time. He's not happy with his job. He never wanted to work in the business industry. He never wanted to manage his grandfather's company. But he's not quitting. He won't, not when they have five children who need education and medical care.
He would never abandon them. He swore he would love and take care of her for the rest of their lives. So how could he? And why would he? He would never, never cheat on her because there is no living, breathing creature who could ever compare to her.

Dorothea called Holden if he could get off work early for the twins' birthday, but as always, he was going to be running late. He promised to bring back gifts, but that wasn't what Dorothea was worried about. If it weren't for her mother, she wouldn't have invited her sister and Damien to the party. But it was his daughters, too, even if she would rather not have her family see them side by side. The resemblance was uncanny. The pink eyes were a dead giveaway. Her feelings aside, she didn't want them around her family. Maybe it was better if Holden was running late. She wouldn't want him to see this, not when their marriage is hanging by the precipice.

Looking back at it now, she couldn't recall what went wrong that day. It was her daughters' birthday, the twins were growing up into beautiful children with dark brown curls, pink bejewelled eyes, and flushed dimpled cheeks - they looked so beautiful, so like their biological father. She should have been happy. The secret was out. She no longer had to hide it. The only problem left was to confess to her husband. He loved her too much to let her go, so if she just confessed the truth and pleaded with him, begged him to stay, and promised him she would never see Damien again - she would even go as far as suggest they move, then perhaps she could keep her family.
Steph won't have to look so sad while eating her favourite cake because Holden had been caught up with work, and Belle won't have to take a nap so she would have the energy to see him late in the night. Because if she confessed the truth, then she would have been more assertive with Holden, and she would have seen how his work had destroyed him bit by bit. . . If she had, then maybe. . .

Everyone had gone home, but Damien stayed. It had been a long time since they faced each other, a long time since she found out he had gotten her sister pregnant. Dorothea thought it was over. It should have been over, so when he reached out with the practiced affections of an old lover, with a touch so familiar she had almost given in, it took her a minute before she could push him away. It was only a minute. It only took a minute, but Holden had seen it all.
If he had any ounce of faith in her before that day, it had all disappeared in that one minute she failed to reject Damien's advances.
