Analyzing The Abilities of Characters From The Boys Pt. XI

đŚEmmađŚ
Little Cricket, more regularly known as Emma, is a child star turned influencer whoâs actress impressed me purely by taking a character I otherwise would roll my eyes at and making me adore and root for her.
Emmaâs ability is size manipulation. Much like Alice in Wonderland, when she eats she grows, and when she makes herself vomit she shrinks. This is tethered to an eating disorder thatâs been perfectly tailored by her motherâs obsessive hand. Her mother carries a tape measure around to make sure her daughter isnât too small or too big, which makes for an obvious metaphor for the unloading of generational body image issues.
The most important aspect of Emmaâs character is that in the Gen V S1 finale, itâs revealed that she can shrink by simply feeling small after Sam yelled at her. This proves that her ability isnât truly dependent on food, but rather on the feeling of being too big or too small whenever she binges and purges.
-Psychology Major Moment-
âKilling Us Softlyâ is a series of documentaries put out by Jean Killbourne about the unsettling and frankly murderous nature of the beauty industry towards young women. Jean said in one of the documentaries something that stuck with me to this day, and reminds me deeply of Emmaâs situation. She had said that while men are encouraged to be the largest of them all, the biggest man in every room they walk into, women are taught to be a perfect size 0, or in other words, âto not even existâ. Emma is repulsed by how huge she becomes after saving her friends, and ignores how in her giant form sheâs stronger than Sam, capable of pressing him to the ground and holding him there with no obvious effort. Sheâs been indoctrinated and manipulated into truly believing that being petite is being valuable, and Iâm praying that come the end of the show we get to see her become a giant woman yet again.
This whole ordeal reminded me so much of âI Like Giantsâ by Kimya Dawson, purely because when all is said and done, sheâs a kickass hero and devoted best friend to Marie, but even then âall girls feel too big sometimes, regardless of their sizeâ.
Holy shit what I wouldn't do to be in the middle but the vampires are Jordan Li, Marie Moreau and Emma Meyer...

Don't worry Emma, my sweet girl, you're not alone âşď¸
Andre: Emma, you're in charge. Take Marie and Jordan with you.
Emma: Yes! My fantasy threesome.
Andre: ...
Jordan: ...
Marie: ...
Emma: Of allies on a mission.

just watched gen V episodes 1-3, lets go opinions nobody asked for!!
I'm all in. It may be my black girl mc bias, but I am deeply invested.
I was really not into The Boys. The color-grading, bleak outlook on humanity, and six millionth deconstruction of superman all felt stale to me, and I wasn't a fan of incels recieving new ammo, no matter how satirical it was.
Watching Gen V though made me honestly want to give it another chance.
My one criticism is the criticism I have with most mainstream film, which is the lack of subtlety. There is a bigender character, a schizophrenic character, and a character with an ED in this show, and that is not even the half of it. I would appreciate this more if the show would talk directly to those audiences instead of seemingly spending the whole show adding footnotes explaining those concepts to the general public. But I can let this slide because a foot in the door is a foot in the door and we really need that right now.
Meta aside, oh my GOD this story. I have never been so invested in my life.
Andre and Cate haven't really grabbed me emotionally, but they're both acted so well that i'm intrigued anyways.
Jordan is really fun for me because she has a story outside of her gender. He's really direct and cool and is the exact character archetype I catch feelings for in media. He's also played by TWO actors who have blended their performances so well that I kept forgetting they were separate people.
Marie, Emma, and Sam are so perfect I could probably write dissertations on them, but for now I will settle for saying Waterworld is almost definitely foreshadowing, and if it's not it's a metaphor.
The DEAN is such good writing. They casted an actress who played a loving mother in bridgerton to be a sneak-attack villain, and I haven't seen such a good twist of expectations since Chris Evans in Knives Out.
idk i never know how to end these that's all I got.
I hate a character with unwavering morals and the constant desire to do the right thing 24/7. Like, you donât wanna go apeshit just once? Just lose it a little bit?
Iâm saying this after watching Gen V and realizing I wouldâve cracked that bloody eyed one armed b**** the second I realized she was messing with my mind for whatever reasons. No talking. No hearing her out. No conversation whatsoever. She wouldâve KNEW sheâd been in a fight cause I would have floored her.
But thatâs just how I AM..
