If I had a nickel for every masc angel that told a male protagonist that he loved him soon before being killed in a tragic sense infront of the protagonist, I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, huh? (Technically the kaworu one happened like 3 times but still)
I fucking love the idea of Shinji becoming an angel of nephlim in some form, so fucking much.
Like it pushes him closer to being like Kaworu, it kinda shows a loss of humanity, and kinda the effects of his repeated sacrifice when he pilots; and especially after the Zereul fight, seeing Shinji's body now reflecting the evolution and loss of humanity that Unit 01 has following its merge with the S² engine.
Also it just looks and feels dope as hell! The idea of Shinji being left not entirely human after Unit 01 reconstituted him, and him becoming the very thing he's been fighting against. Shinji after giving everything he had left, breaking his promise to never pilot again, choosing to get back in and fight again showing the last of his humanity dying with him as Zereul stabs him, and letting him be reborn as some form of angel-human (a nephlim?), and also the idea of shinji having like the core red eyes, and controlling unit 01 (like Kaworu controlling 02), also just looks so cool to me. And I feel like it kinda shows a better version of "The Curse of the EVA" that they mention
Like I loved that in Rebuild 2.0 and 3.0+1.0
