Reasons why Fabian/Riz is a Good™ Ship in my book

Even their shared common goal, to be like their parents, is gone about differently (Fabian has been brainwashed into wanting to become like his dad lest he disappoint him, while Riz wants to be a detective in order to solve a mystery personal to him and just takes advantage of his mom’s profession to help him complete this)

Just imagine Fabian… finding out his boyfriend is so poor he sometimes has to eat cereal with water for dinner…..and making a point of inviting him over for dinner like three times a week ‘just because you starving would be an inconvenience to team morale, of course’

Riz does not generally accept hand outs, thank you very much, but you know what? If he’s invited to go over to this handsome dick’s house, he’s damn well gonna empty his fridge

They’re both actually pretty socially inept, but each in their own way. I can see them helping each other learn from each other, since the areas one is mostly clueless in are kinda the other’s specialty (Fabian: too show-offy and extroverted™, doesn’t know when to admit he’s wrong or shut up, Riz: too awkward and paranoid, doesn’t know when to insist on something or how to really talk to people in general)

The possibilities for stupid passive aggressive pet names and playful relationship teasing are endless

They both have trust issues, in their own way…. imagine them helping each other overcome them…. and growing as individuals….. hnn

Fic idea: Fabian explaining to the Hangman that he’s into guys/ being stressed about coming out to his ultra macho, slightly misogynistic sentient motorcycle- but it turns out the Hangman was only trying to help wingman him with girls bc thats what Johnny Spells did, basically it was left on past user settings and just has to re-configure real quick.

In the end the Hangman just being the most embarrassing wingman in front of all the cute boys and Fabian appreciates it but he is NOT READY YET HANGMAN how do you even TALK to cute guys???

Could you explain fabriz to me lol? Like, its the most popular d20 ship as far as i can tell, and most of the d20 fan content I see is about it, but I like, fully do not see it. queer riz is an hc I can totally get behind, but where does this turn into him and fabian being together? genuinely not trying to be mean or start beef btw. I'm a gay guy and I love mlm d&d ships, and I'd like to get behind fabriz, but fabian seems like the straightest person in the world, idk. I don't mean to be shitty

youre totally fine!! & before i get into anything, just because i never see this get said and its v important to me: it’s totally fine to not ship a thing. even if it has a hundred explanations and canon basis, or everyone in the world loves it, you can still not like a ship. if you just dont get it, or if them showing up on your dash all the time is just annoying, or for any reason - thats fine. you shouldn’t engage in content in ways that arent enjoyable for you!! and while im happy to explain why i, personally, like fabian/riz a lot, its okay to not agree with my interpretations, or to resonate more strongly with other ships, or whatever. no one is gonna be mad! engage fandom in a way you enjoy!!

now, with that disclaimer out of the way:

for me - and this is going to be a personal thing, because different people search for different things in fiction - the main thing i look for in any ship is the potential for characters to change and be changed by their relationship. sometimes i like this in the direction of negative character development. but more often, i am most in love with the idea of characters choosing to improve themselves specifically for the sake of their loved one. im a sucker for the healing power of love - not in that My Loving You Will Make You A Better Person, because gross, but in that My Love For You Makes Me Want To Be A Better Person. especially for gay ships. 

that means that i like ships where they characters both overlap and differ in ways that encourage growth. i like ships where characters have very different personalities, & thus very different character flaws & strengths, but very similar life experiences, and as such can learn from each other. and, of course, i like ships where characters are extremely affectionate to each other, whether they show it or not.

fabian and riz have a lot of narrative overlap, and it would take me ages and ages to do a full analysis of it. they both romanticize and seek to imitate their parents, and especially their dads. fabian’s front of Pirate Adventurer Man is, over and over again, confirmed to be both created & encouraged by bill seacaster, because thats how they relate to each other; riz’s single-minded focus on Detective Mysteries TM is rooted almost entirely in watching his mother work & the backwards projection onto his own father. they also both have serious hangups with their dads’ deaths - they both get Last Dad Messages over the second half of season one, Extremely Unsubtly. that being said, despite having such closely matched hang ups, they have very different conclusions; riz is on a vengeance quest & ends up avenging his dead father & saving his mom, whereas fabian ends up growing past his father’s influence (if very, VERY slowly) and coming to appreciate the others around him. theyre parallels - but they also have very different ways of approaching those same problems, and very different resolutions as a result.

(i couldnt possibly go through every single parallel between fabian and riz and not make a fucking novel, so a quick top five: Vengeance Quest For Dad, social isolation despite talking to people a lot, using ADVENTURE to distract from/cover emotions, horse-blinder focus on goals, absolute mechanical brutality either when needed or when it looks cool, etc etc)

fabian and riz also both have intense hang ups with vulnerability. they show it in very different ways - fabian puts up a front of Yes I Am A Manly Man Who Will Not Take Shit And I Don’t Care About Anyone But Me (which is part of why he reads as a straight guy on first look, because straight guys are all about that Repression); riz just straight up does not talk or think about it, will not tell his friends they’re next to his dad’s grave, doesn’t talk to anyone about finding his dad’s last message or being trapped in the palimpcest, Sentimentality Is For Cowards Cool Kids Avoid Things. which, like, all clocks, because theyre Teenage Boys.

the thing is, because of the specific ways that they have these vulnerability hang ups, i think fabian and riz are uniquely positioned to help each other overcome their issues - and, in doing so, to help themselves, because identifying each other’s problems would help them identify their own. there’s a reason that fabian’s first, primary, and only freak out over the gilear video in the new ep was all about “you said the BALL was my best friend what the FUCK.” riz is not Cool. he’s a goblin, and a detective, and a huge nerd, and the opposite of a Popular Kid. fabian being seen showing Actual Affection to anyone would be a hit to his ego, but to the ball??? never mind that fabian in episode two reached up a corn glob’s butthole to pull riz out at the expense of his clean clothes, his dignity, and his consciousness, or that fabian hand-calligraphied hundreds of business cards for him, or that fabian always thinks riz’s ideas are the best of the group, or that lou has said out of character that fabian really does like riz. he can’t be Seen doing it.

which hurts. it hurts! riz is used to people not wanting him around, and it sucks. but fabian doesnt realize it hurts riz’s feelings yet, because fabian’s a dumbass. the thing is that fabian really does like riz, is willing to let him ride sidesaddle on the motorcycle when the hangman just wants a hot girl, apologizes when he accidentally keeps evidence from riz, hits the people who hit him. he just doesn’t realize he likes riz, for the same reason he doesn’t realize that his thing for aelwen is all projection, for the same reason he doesn’t realize he’s hurting riz’s feelings: because fabian has spent so long convincing himself and everyone around him that he’s a Pirate Adventurer Huzzah that he lacks any actual self-awareness beyond that projected image of himself. and learning that he’s hurting riz - learning that he likes riz, really likes him, as just as friend or as something else, and that he doesn’t want to hurt riz, and swallowing his pride so that he doesn’t hurt riz - would be a really strong kickstart to fabian moving past that projection to some real, viable self-worth.

riz, on the other hand, is an Avoider. but that doesnt work here, with fabian, because fabian is loud as fuck. riz has made stronger claims on his relationship with fabian than with his own mother, because fabian is just fucking impossible to avoid. riz can’t just like…hide in his office and not think about fabian. for one thing, he just straight up likes fabian too much, but for another, fabians too useful to just completely avoid him. theyre on the same wavelength, every time, for what the next step should be. even if he did leave, fabian wouldn’t realize that riz is avoiding him, because fabian has 9 wisdom and is a dumbass, and he’d just come banging down riz’s door as loud and obnoxiously as possible anyway, because thats who fabian is.

riz can still avoid it for a while - see: “he’s my best friend its not weird why is everyone so into kissing i just want to spend time with my bff fabian” - but he cant avoid it forever. and when he does eventually realize that its Not A Platonic Thing, if he tries to avoid it, fabian is going to come find him and ask what the fuck is wrong with him, because fabian is a Confrontation First person, not an avoidance person. riz has to face it, eventually. riz will have to face everything, eventually, because avoidance is not a healthy long-term solution. and a good experience with confronting one of those issues, and coming out the other side and being happier, realizing that change can be a good thing, would, once again, be a really compelling segway into some genuine character growth.

so tl;dr, i think fabian and riz share a very genuine and real affection for each other, even if theyre both too Teenage Boy Dumb to realize it. i think that their flaws complement each others in a way that inspires character growth, and they have lots of shared life experience to relate to each other. and i think that all of that combined could make a really sweet, compelling love story.

i have a strong feeling that in the world of fabriz doing the dumb practice kissing thing one of them eventually goes to kristen when they realize they like the other and she just. laughs for five minutes and gives them absolutely no advice except to be less stupid

kristen is far and away one of the Last people theyd go to, only second maybe to gorgug. she’s got a girlfriend! right there! she wouldn’t understand needing to Practice, or making out without any, like, romantic intention. she’s still hung up on the idea that shes found The One, yknow. at best she’d just laugh at them and tell them they should date, which is wrong, because it’s just practice, and she can just chill, okay.

gorgug would probably understand. gorgug tends to understand stuff like that. but fabian hates when gorgug understands stuff. any time he and gorgug are in the same page he feels deep in his gut that it is a warning sign that he is on the Wrong Page. plus gorgug would absolutely tell everyone else, and that’s just a big no. Hoof.

fig would Get It. wanting to get ur kisses in? casual making out for practice? oh fig would Get It. but fig would probably also talk about it, and even worse might offer to help, to sub in and kiss the two of them as part of learning, and something about fabian feels. he doesnt know. like he doesn’t want it to be a thing he has with anyone else. he wants it to be His And Riz’s thing. his and riz’s totally platonic thing. that’s not weird.
