What went on there left the children traumatized, but when they all receive a letter out of the blue, telling them that Sir Reginald has died, they have the chance to go back and get some recompense, and maybe some answers as well.

20 Fics for 2020 (Rated G, Rated T, and Not Rated Edition)
Over the last year, there were many fics that I read that really moved me, and, in hopes of giving the authors the credit they deserve, I decided to do 20 Fic Recs for 2020. This came a little late because I was focusing on writing so much, but here are the fics that were in my top 20 last year!!! Not all of these have moodboards, but the ones that do will have a link beside them on the list!!! If you are an author of one of these fics and want to see a moodboard of it, please tell me!!!!
20. “the world is big enough without you” by Mavrick/ @mavrickison (x)
I am a huge fan of angst... which will become apparent when you read this entire list, and I also really love character studies a lot. They have a wonderful way of characterizing Vanya, and the style of writing in this is just genuinely impeccable. I am super excited where this fic goes, and it’s something that has made me realize why reading WIPs is actually excellent because I get to react right as it comes out each time it updates, and I’m super excited to read more in the future!!!!
19. “A Natural Perspective” by Quokkasandnothingelse
I started reading this fic right around the time that it was first posted, and I just was hooked instantly. Exploring guilt people feel through time travel is just.... god it’s the ultimate vibe for fiveya. It’s a fic that I will always adore, and I think that it has actually been completed in the time it took me to make this list (side note, but I’m SORRY for how long this took). There is one scene in particular that lives rent-free in my head, but I really cannot spoil it just know that... y’all should all read this fic. I have not read the last chapter yet because I’ve been trying to somewhat avoid procrastinating writing this list, but I’m going to reward myself with leaving long drawn-out comments after this, and I’m so excited to finish it!!!
18. “Coffee Beats” by ellaphunt19 (x)
I really enjoy fics that I can read and they give me the same feeling I get from watching a rom-com. This one-shot series, revolving around barista!Five and Vanya (who works right across the street from him at a record store) just really does what fluff is supposed to do— let you escape for a bit in a lovely, sweet setting. This author is somebody I collab with along with @jjdoggie-s-fanfics and @liquidsparks and they’re all just wonderful people to work with, and I’m so glad that 2021 will be filled with writing alongside them! (As we’ve announced on a recent LITCA update, we’ll also be collabing on a Powerpuff Girls AU and a Teen Titans AU!!!) If you don’t have time to read a multi-chap but want to read something and finish it, I really recommend reading the fics in this series. They are connected, but each one is technically able to be read on its own and you can finish one and still have a sense of completion!
17. “Mistakes Are Best Made Moments” by NicePlaceToBe
I really love a good business AU, and this fic truly feels like a rom-com and I justADORE that. This writer has some of my favorite fluff ever (like all of my favorite fluff fics in ANY fandoms I’ve been in are all within the fiveya fandom, the fluff writers here are truly next-level). I just really love all the fics this author writes!!! One thing I really like in this particular fic is how the writer characterizes Vanya. If you guys like business AUs/ fluff, this is def a fic to read.
16. “Hubris” by RepeatingLitanies/ @repeatinglitanies (x)
I really love short character studies like this, especially when they’re loaded with angst. It’s a short enough fic that you could read it for sure over a lunch break, and what would a lunch break be if not for sobbing a little bit? There are a few fics by this author that just have always stood out in my mind. A lot of the earlier writers of fiveya I read before really starting to write for it, and her fic, “A Necessary Correction,” will always remind me of when I first started reading for the fandom. I’ve rambled to her about it a few times before LMAO. A lot of her super heavy angst fics are my faves, and I like how she explores how small things that can happen can cause complete changes in the characters.
15. “Life Beyond All Comprehension” by JjdoggieS/ @jjdoggie-s-fanfics (x)
Okay, I’m going to be honest and say that this fic lives in my mind primarily because of Diego and Ben in it. If my future wife and I don’t have some weird little teenager exporing our house and referring to us as the gay couple who died mysteriously, what has my life up to this point even been about? That being said, Five just being a weird guy (insert the “i’m the weirdo” gif (you know the one) here) and Vanya being a grieving edgelord goth is quite possibly the most iconic AU characterization I’ve ever seen. I rambled to the writer about it so much, but I just think that Five and Vanya in this are immaculate. Also, I just love Allison and Luther in here too. Honestly, if you’re a found family fan? Read this. Please! (I didn’t even mention this was a Beetlejuice AU in my ranting omfg, what a VIBE.)
14. “Paper Chain” by 263adder/ @263adder (x)
Oh my gosh!!! The OG fiveya fluff writer!!! Well, first of all, I adore everything that she writes, but one of the reasons I adore this series is that if I just have a little time to read something and I want to read something from start to finish, I can. Basically, this series is a bunch of one-shots, revolving around a bunch of holidays. I am a huge fan of writing Valentine’s Day fics, and this series actually inspired me to write a T-rated one-shot series for Valentine’s Day. Her characterization of Five is honestly one of the bests in the fandom, imo, and her writing is always stellar. Every time there is a new story in this series, I know that my morning will be made when I read it. She has inspired so many people to get into fiveya, I know, and, if anybody is reading this list that hasn’t read much of fiveya and are curious, seriously read her works!!! I also have another series that I’m going to be recommending by her on here, and either of them are worth reading if you haven’t already!!!
13. “tell me what you’re doing on the other side” by Crystallinee
This fic has a lot of tropes that I just adore (jealousy and protectiveness mixing together to create possessiveness is like one of my favorite things ever), especially when reading fiveya. I really enjoy all of this author’s writing, and I adore how they section everything out in this one in particular. It’s just got great vibes, and I really love it. Another one of their fics is on the smut version of this list, and I just adore everything I’ve read from them.
12. “The Wedding Date” by NicePlaceToBe
God, this fic is truly just. The softest thing I’ve ever read. It’s so CUTE. 😭 I really enjoy friends to lovers, and I really enjoy a little bit of jealousy mixed with concern mixed with guilt, like that’s my life. This is definitely one of the fics that I think people should start with if they’re new to fiveya. (I always go for hardcore major character death angst and smut but I know this might be somewhat... abnormal.) Truly, I think leaning into friends to lovers with fiveya makes for some of my favorite fics because it’s one of the most compelling aspects of the ship imo. Also, no powers AUs in general just make me 💕
11. “Multiples of Seven” by JjDoggieS/ @jjdoggie-s-fanfics (x)
By this point, I’m pretty sure the author and I have nine (9) exchanges with one another and then all of our collabs. Well, this was from our ORIGINAL exchange, that started from us talking about a crack fic idea that ended up spiraling and it’s basically just simp five for 35 chapters now. This fic starts off p angsty, but I know that her fluff will kick in at some point and I’m SO excited to get there. That being said, her angst is like... AHHH. I always tell her that she needs to teach me how to write fluff and I’ll teach her how to write smut in return, but GOD I never even knew she was capable of angst until she was ripping my heart out with the fifth fic on this list.
10. “Science for Geniuses, Love for Dummies”/ “Metamorphosis” by 263adder/ @263adder (x)
Absolutely my favorite Adder series. I’ve loved everything she has written in here, but the moodboard is actually for “Metamorphosis” just because I wasn’t thinking about how it was a series when I was filling out my rubric lmao!!! However, I really adore Leyden Jar, Metamorphosis, and Newton’s Apple a lot!!! One thing I really enjoy is how like... the mutual pining is real in these. Every time I see those two dorks be dumb teenagers, I’m just like, “You’re idiots, and ily both,” which is truly what fluff should make you feel.
9. “Rumour” by pacoca (x)
I had literal TEARS streaming down my cheeks from how hard I was laughing at one particular moments in this, which was probably helped by the fact that it was like super late when I read it but STILL. Okay, so, first of all, the moodboard is lowkey for Allison, but she was the star of that fic. She felt like a Disney protagonist. 😭 I think too that I just love fics with Allison’s rumor being used for petty reasons because it’s just so fucking hilarious and something I accept as canon by this point. While I do love Allison fics that talk about her guilt for using it, I also think that anybody with her power would certainly act that way as a teen. Also, Five’s awkward energies in this are just... god-tier.
8. “Second Star to the Right, Straight On Til’ Morning” by JjdoggieS/ @jjdoggie-s-fanfics (x)
I might be alone in this, but Peter Pan (2003) actually invented love for me. Seeing a fiveya Peter Pan AU that came from an exchange between @liquidsparks and @jjdoggie-s-fanfics is like... It really just feeds the soul. One thing that I really like too is that she made Five’s shadow just be The Boy like that’s such a soft lil detail and my heart just 🥺. This fic brings back all of the feelings I got from watching this movie the first time, and I’m so excited to see it progress. (Check out the art for it here and here too!)
7. “nearly didn’t notice the gentlest feeling” by sweetheartbitterheart/ @fiveyasapphics (x)
I really adore 5+1 fics, and I just love how this one just really explores the dynamics of the family a lot. This fic is soft as hell, and it’s also just so funny at points to me because I think I could see a lot of these conversations actually happening. I really love the writer a lot, and I like how she really gets the softness of fiveya in all of her fics. She was another fiveya writer that I read before I was starting to write, and I can assure y’all that if it weren’t for a few of those authors that I wouldn’t be writing for them still. I recommend all of her fics, but if you’re looking for another T fic by her, I rec “even though our love is doomed” which is the one that I read first by her.
6. “Five Going On 30” by ellaphunt19 (x)
Okay, I’m going to force myself not to rant here, but I’m probably going to end up ranting. First of all, the fact that she’s said that it’s half fluff and half angst because it was written for both @liquidsparks and myself will constantly make me KROK. The feelings that this trudges up just reminds me of how it FELT to be this age, to feel all of that insecurity that comes from growing up and how CLUELESS you are. I remember thinking that I knew everything that age, so it’s just super relatable. Plus, this fic has DOUBLE the nostaglia because it’s an AU based off the movie “Thirteen Going On Thirty.” One thing that I really love is that this fic just really leans into the emotions. I was not expecting a movie from the early 00’s to make me as emotional as this did, and I am just counting on sobbing the entirety of the scene that ACTUALLY makes me cry in the movie. (To clarify, the movie itself is pretty light-hearted, but there is this one scene that will always get me because just.... God, friends to lovers is just That Bitch™️ for me.) When this fic is fully completed, I intend to read it from the beginning and just sob the entire day. I will absolutely take the day off from writing to feel all of my emotions, and I will probably scream at her for a few hours about it. So,... sorry in advance, Ella. ❤️
5. “I’m In Too Deep, Can’t Touch the Bottom with my Feet” by Jjdoggies/ @jjdoggie-s-fanfics (x)
THIS IS JUST. God, this is my emotional support whump. I love all of the comics elements she adds (the fic itself is an AU where Vanya goes to Hotel Oblivion, and it may or may not have inspired me to add a fic to one of our exchanges dealing wtih Hotel Oblivion), but the WHUMP. There’s something about seeing your faves in a lot of emotional pain that just makes you feel alive, LMAO. I will rant to her about this fic forever, and I just... I think a lot of my very most favorite fics are from authors that tend to write frequently in one genre and they kinda just turn it around completely and show an entirely different side of their writing. As much as I love her fluff, this fic just RESONATES with me. Also, it’s totally done now, so y’all better get on it. 😤
4. “Ut Malum Pluvia” by rappaccini/ @rappaccini (x)
This is legitimately the only thing I can honestly say that I have read aloud, drunk off my ass on 3/4 a bottle of Arbor Mist®️ Mango Strawberry Moscato, to the author, taking breaks to threaten her if she dared let Mr. Pennycrumb get hurt. One day, I intend to make a powerpoint of this fic and present it to her in a similar state of inebriation, and, when I do, I think that she’ll witness me sobbing as much as I did that night. Lbr, I still tear up thinking about certain lines. One thing that she just NAILS is the ability to make me feel crushing pain with just one sentence. I had actually never been a super big fan of fix-it fics before I read this one, but this sold me on the genre. The way she easily blends in comics elements, the interactions among the family with the exploration of the “forced found family” dynamics, and just the amount of EFFORT that I know was put into making this series. Genuinely, I am so blessed to have read this fic, and I am so blessed to be friends with the writer because her writing is just so lovely. (Idk if I’m the only person who does this, but do any of y’all have a writer who will comment on your fics once in a while and you’re like, “WAIT YOU READ MY STUFF?!? REALLY?!? THANK YOU?!?” That’s her for me, tbh.)
3. “The Corpse Bride” by xxbunnykissesxx/ @xxbunnykissesxx (x)
I will rec this fic forever. First of all, I was not expecting to get as emotional as I did from it. She generally writes crack fic, so I was just not expecting to cry from this. I think this might be my favorite AU of fiveya as far as the general vibe/world of it goes, and I love the divergences she made from the canon of The Corpse Bride because the ending feels much more fitting of the themes in it? (Yes, I’m aware I just said her story was better than the film, sue me.) This is another of those instances where a writer writing outside of what they usually write made something just STICK with me. Five is the ultimate wife guy in this, too, which I always love in any fic.
2. “Two Feet Forward” by nightsrk/ @corvidcraft (x)
GOD. Okay, so this is probably one of the most popular fiveya WIPs rn, but I didn’t actually read it until I was making this list. The way he writes the dynamics of fiveya is just... he really gets all of the most compelling parts of them. Plus, I love that he wrote a fic that’s just salty about all of the ableism in TUA because there really is a lot of it, both in the show and fandom tbh. There are a few lines in there that just choke me up because they really accurately describe what I feel often. I think too that Five’s characterization is perfect, and Vanya’s is excellent as well. I just love this fic a lot (it recently updated!), and I’m so excited to see how it all ends.
1. “empty promises, loaded lies” by sunchime/ @liquidsparks (x)
First of all, everything she writes is impeccable, and I reccomend it. I was lucky enough to actually beta this fic before she posted it, and I just... I am constantly in awe of how beautiful her writing is. She has such a poetic style with a lot of her writing, and I just think it elevates the emotions that much more. The fic itself has a sort of dark academia feel to it (not precisely but like fancy boarding school with murder and stuff does fit that Vibe™️), and I still can’t get over that it’s technically a high school AU because it is unlike any high school AU I have ever read😭😭😭😭
