Frozen 3 & 4 Theories and Analysis

So the Frozen 4 announcement

I am cautiously optimistic and here's why - I had previously said that I think they should make 4 movies to match with the seasons and I think that is exactly what they are doing.

3 and 4 will be Spring and Summer, though not in that order necessarily. And yes I know the first movie had brief summer, but c'mon guys we all the first movie was winter! The bulk of that movie took place in winter and that movie explored wintry themes!

Frozen was winter. It explored the dual nature of winter - beauty and danger. How winter can be as much fun as it can be dangerous. How viewing through love or fear can make all the difference. It discussed how to survive the winter, you have to let people in. How love can thaw the cold. How the primary focus during this time of year is to hold onto each other until the warmth returns. It was all metaphorical, but still.

Frozen 2 was autumn and this one was almost certainly not metaphorical. Autumn is considered the transformational season. We are moving from Summer to Winter. Nature is decaying, the harvest has come, and we must release what we no longer need. Elsa transformed and let go Queen of Arendelle for The Fifth Spirit. Anna transformed and let go of Princess of Arendelle for Queen of Arendelle. Olaf literally said that Enchanted Forests are, metaphorically, places of transformation.

Now for Frozen 3 and 4... the narrative, in my opinion, could work with Summer into Spring, but also Spring into Summer

Spring is considered the season of rebirth - the growing fruit that came from decay and death (autumn and winter). Rebirth is healing, murky, and in the beginning it can be difficult. But it also means hope. The air is light. The warmth is coming. Snowbells and daffodils are breaking through the frozen grounds. The worms are waking. Life is returning! To many, this is their favorite season (warm after the cold, but not heavy like summer).

Summer is the season of celebration! Warmth has returned! Life is flourishing! It is so green and so hot that even the nights are a comfortable temperature. All plant-life, insects, and animals are awake! It's time to go on vacation, go to the beach, travel the world! It's a time to be lazy because it is just so hot. In the old days, they valued this season because they had survived the winter! We are alive! Let's party!

So in terms of F3 and F4 (with absolutely no plot beats to go on except for the seasonal metaphors), it could either be:

F3 is Summer. Anna and Elsa have actualized and they are doing what they have always wanted to do! What they were always meant to be! They are killing it as the Fifth Spirit, there is a wonderful peace between the two lands. They are happy... until something comes along to threaten that peace. Something bad enough to shake up the stability they thought they had... leading to F4 with Spring. Whatever they went through in F3, the next installment is the time of healing and hope. But this rebirth is easier than what they went through in F1, because they know who they are now and they love each other all the more.

OR

F3 is Spring and they are appreciating all the fruit that this new world they have created has to offer. It's a difficult peace to be sure. The Northuldra and the Arendellians are still having trouble getting along, and it brings visible stress to the sisters. Whatever happens in this installment leads to the breaking down of something because rebirth is hopeful, but not stable. But it is an aha! moment for the sisters because it leads to even greater stability that can be felt in F4 - the installment of summer and truly the everlasting happiness the sisters and their family and poeples have been hoping for.

Ok like as a Frozen superfan I am excited by the prospect of having more Frozen content (and more songs 😍) but as someone who loves the story analysis aspects and themes, Frozens 3 and 4 scare me. I’m so afraid they will do something that will mess up the beautiful story they’ve told up til now. Frozen and Frozen 2 (supplemented by the books and shorts) are one complete story. There are very few loose ends after Frozen 2 like there were after Frozen. All the characters are happy and, thematically, they are where they are meant to be. Even Polar Nights felt a bit forced. Don’t get me wrong, I liked PN, but it didn’t feel like a story that was particularly relevant to the characters’ (particularly Elsa and Anna’s) growth and thematic development. All this to say, I am apprehensive about the prospect of future Frozen movies. Obviously, when it comes time for trailers and promos and eventually release, I’ll be ridiculously excited, but I’m also scared of them ruining it. 😭

Ok I wrote this earlier right after seeing the announcement, but now I’m kind of feeling better. Still scared, but now excited is taking over haha 😂 Thinking of new story and songs and costumes and story and plots is making me very intrigued and I’m really very excited to see where they’re going with the story.

Kind of all over the place, sorry!

Frozen 3 & 4 - more analyzing

So I was thinking that when Jen Lee made F2, she turned her focus to Elsa's magic and where it comes from and why she has it. This was the most obvious direction they could have gone in.

So what would be the most obvious direction for them to go in next?

I think the most obvious direction would be exploration of Anna and Elsa as the fifth spirit, further exploration of Ahtohollan, and their mission as the bridge between the Northuldra and Arendelle, and healing the rift therein.

So I think at least F3 will be lore-heavy (though they gotta keep the story character-centric because that is what makes it SO GOOD).

Frozen III logo revealed in D23 | News!

Frozen III Logo Revealed In D23 | News!

We finally have a First look at the logo and possible theme for Frozen 3! Officially revealed during the panel

Frozen III Logo Revealed In D23 | News!

Breathtaking and gorgeous! Simply gorgeous!! The colours are so calm and so beautiful!! Not what I was expecting but that's a good thing!! The four elements still seem to be in play with Elsa as the fifth spirit given by the snowflake too.

The season by the looks of it seems to be Spring given the colours. Frozen was in summer (and winter some may argue), Frozen II in autumn so it seems like Frozen III will be taking place in spring 🌸

Honestly I'm all in for the much lighter tone because Frozen 2 had a darker tone to it so I'm extremely excited!!

Its gonna be something deepened in magic, mythic and hystorical lore (Yarl Aren?) Elsa powers-centered, I dare to say.

Sounds Like The Upcoming Frozen Film(s) Will Again Focus On A Lot Of The Mythical And Historical Stuff,

Sounds like the upcoming Frozen film(s) will again focus on a lot of the mythical and historical stuff, although there are some questions about the future too!

I’m particularly interested in “was there a fifth spirit before?” and “where do the nature spirits come from?” as these are things I’ve theorized about before and it’ll be awesome to have a definitive answer! “Why are there castle ruins throughout Ahtohallan?” intrigues me as well, since I’ve always wondered the same, but there’s not really enough to come up with a solid theory!

(Also, I’m not sure who took this picture, I’ve seen it going around here and on discord (it may be originally from twitter?), but if anyone wants me to credit the original poster, just let me know who it was and I’ll gladly credit them!)

Ok, the questions from D23 tonight about “Do we still need to beware the Frozen Heart?” and “Who is the Frozen Heart?” got me thinking about this again. The capitalization and the way these questions are phrased seem to indicate that there is more to the Frozen Heart than is shown in the first movie, and this runic passage seems to imply that this has happened before. That someone had their heart frozen in a similar way to how Elsa froze Anna’s with her magic. I’m also wondering how this could tie in with other questions such as “was there a fifth spirit before?” The fact that the person shown to have a frozen heart seems to be a Viking (picture below since I for some reason didn’t include it in my original post 🤦‍♀️) combined with the presumably Viking figure shown in the concept art from D23 might mean that we could learn more about this past person and their story in relation with ancient stories of the fifth spirit and Ahtohallan! Did this person live in harmony with Ahtohallan and the spirits of nature and the Frozen Heart was an accident? Or did they do something to cause Ahtohallan/the spirits to lash out?

Ok, The Questions From D23 Tonight About Do We Still Need To Beware The Frozen Heart? And Who Is The

The question “do we still need to beware the Frozen Heart?” really haunts me though, as it makes it seem like a villain and implies that Elsa’s out-of-control powers may not be the only thing that can cause a Frozen Heart. I mentioned other possible causes for this past-person’s Frozen Heart in my original post, and I may be back to wondering about them now. What if it does refer to a metaphorical Frozen Heart? In which case you could argue that it could refer to various unresolved flaws or trauma within the characters, which may come back to haunt them in the upcoming movies. Do we STILL need to beware the Frozen Heart that we thought thawed out a long time ago?

Translating the Runes in Secrets of the Magic Makers

Ok, so I already said in my previous post (X) that I love Secrets of the Magic Makers and the runic writing in Frozen in general, but now I’m going to actually talk about the translations of the runes.

Most* of the runes shown in Frozen movies and shorts are historically accurate and translatable. They are Younger Futhark runes, used in Nordic regions beginning around the 9th century. The Younger Futhark alphabet has 16 runes and is a simplification of the Elder Futhark, which had 24 originally. The Younger Futhark alphabet was used throughout Scandinavia in the Viking Age and declined after Catholicism was introduced. (Source: Runes Illustrated by Rachel Newcombe)

* I say most because the runes in Olaf’s Frozen Adventure on the bell are not historically accurate. They are simply a direct English transliteration of the words “Ring in the Season”

Disney worked with Old Norse language expert Jackson Crawford (you can find his YT channel here (X)) to ensure that the runes in F1 are historically accurate.

Ok, history lesson over, let’s actually talk about how these runes are relevant to the Frozen story.

I did not translate these myself, although I have kind of taught myself how to now. These translations come from Panya on this website. If you are interested in the detailed translations, I would highly recommend checking it out, as it is truly fascinating!

Translating The Runes In Secrets Of The Magic Makers

Here is the cover of the book. It translates roughly to Runes of Knowledge, but I believe this book to also be Secrets of the Magic Makers (see my previous post for full explanation).

Translating The Runes In Secrets Of The Magic Makers

The inside of the book is 9 lines of text, repeated twice. It appears to say something like

Someone (subject is unclear) was turned to stone (ice?) by the power of the moon. The trolls from the dark mountain realm have healing hands. A soul wounded from cold will heal if brought very quickly to the field of them (the trolls). Trolls have such a nature that they can get sorcery out of the body to save it. Such action done in true love is the only one which can thaw a heart stoned (frozen?) very quickly.

It isn't exactly clear or easy to read, but I think that it tells the story of an ancient Arendellian (possibly Aren, but that’s mostly just a headcanon) whose heart was frozen by some power of the moon. It goes on to say that trolls have the power to remove magic, but that the only way to thaw a frozen heart is an act of true love.

This is VERY interesting as it implies that someone in the ancient past had a frozen heart. It could just be an old story, something that never actually happened. I personally don’t believe there was ever a single person who was the fifth spirit before Elsa and by extension no human who ever wielded ice powers like hers before. Another option is perhaps whoever it was that angered the spirits in some way or ventured too far into Ahtohallan and began to freeze? Or it could be a figurative frozen heart in the sense of a lack of love and compassion. I suppose only Ahtohallan knows this answer.

The other thing that makes this interesting is that it directly says that an act of true love will thaw a frozen heart. Which means that the answer was right there all along. The entire message of love will thaw was summed up here in runes at the very beginning of the movie. This also means that this was part of an Arendellian myth or story at some point and has been forgotten by the time Elsa is born.

So yeah, not really a big revelation or anything, but it is certainly interesting. I would love to know more details about this story and its origin, but again, only Ahtohallan knows. Overall I do think it's fascinating, as it gives us more information about Ancient Arendellian beliefs and traditions that still hold relevance in the time Frozen is actually set. As someone who is OBSESSED with the ancient myths and stories of Arendelle and the surrounding areas, this is so so intriguing to me and I absolutely love it!

Confession (and negativity) time: I want to clarify I don't like Norse Myth. Yes, I'd written things on how there's something from Hel in Elsa, Niflheim, on the river of primordial ice that gave life to everything, Jötunns and trolls, but...I don't want it to play a bigger role in F3/4. I want Saami spirits, Foremother, Nature, forest forces, sieidi and noaidi, sacred stones and springs. For me, this is so much more inspiring and deeper. I find Asgard gods horrible as characters and so overused in modern media. "Valhalla" is not needed when there is Ahtohallan, Lee literally mentioned that the castle is in the Glacier. Also, vikings were a plague to Saami and other tribes of the area, they are actually bad. So, I can see their arc if it happens as only an enemy of the sisters, the art hints at this, and Northuldra("Saami") and their Myth, I hope, will remain the main and positive force of the future movies 🙆

Is that ASGARD in my FROZEN??? (unsubtle rainbow bridge) Is that Ymir's shadow hunting them?? Are we making Atohallan = Muspellheim??? :0 Is Elsa a Vanir in 2027???? HELPPP (we are SO getting a complicated second layer to where her powers come from)

+no shot, if anyone sneaks canon comparisons between Elsa and Fenrir into this, I'll need to be fettered

I know we explore Norse mythology plenty in the Frozen expanded material. We get Skøll as Hans' heartless in KH3, draugr in Polar Nights, and viking constellations in Forest of Shadows (they also pull Aren's mythical sword out of a viking dragon-ship and use it to fight a giant nattmara wolf, so). Usually a lot of the viking-age Scandinavian legend, such as creatures mentioned in the Eddas, are tied to specifically Arendelle's history though.

This promo seems to imply that the Enchanted Forest has some connection with Asgard (I am assuming it is Asgard for now). Or at least we are geographically taking off from there.

Which could come at the expense of Northuldra story? Diff culture. Not every fairytale race is related to the Enchanted Forest, or needs to be-- we have the trolls in the Valley of the Living Rock and Huldrefólk at Miner's Mountain. Although! Nøkk is a more Norse legend as well, yet acts as Northuldra's respected water spirit, so: not unlikely that the Northuldra may honor the existence of Norse spirits. (They may not even appear much at all.)

ohhh fuck. i can smell the magnus chase crossovers three years away. what have you DONE /lh

but I'm just so so excited. What if the crystals from F2 were runic and Anna learned galdr so she could have a moment like Gerda's magic prayer in the Snow Queen? What if we had magical ravens, like the talking ravens in the Hans Christian Andersen fable? What if Elsa argued with the Nornir about destiny, or Olaf bantered with Heimdall and unintentionally caused Ragnarok? What if Kristoff accidentally used Andvari's ring for the vows and gave us the most glorious Disney dragon moment since Maleficent? And come on, Anna with a battleaxe and bloodlust?!

Ironically, first seeing this was the direction after F2, I felt unfavorably about stacking on brand new lore, thinking it might rehash the "newfound community arc" which would make it infuriatingly harder to develop old and new relationships from previous movies (for weak reasons)

This is because Elsa's new power from Frozen II wasn’t really something magical: she still has ice, she’s always had ice, and it’s not like her ice got any more OP than it already was. (F1 already proved she can bring snowmen to life, build entire castles in less than five minutes, and freeze a whole ass fjord. I don't think stopping the flood or talking to a sentient glacier topped all that.) What she gained was fellowship with other magical beings and people who understand magic-- a community to help. Not to mention the closure in knowing that her mother would have accepted her, affirmation that she has a purpose, and freedom to assume new roles.

I do want the new movie to spend time using the new lore to steady our characters though, not the other way around. Can't always become something new to move forward, yknow? Gotta nurture what she has instead of breaking the absolute ceiling eventually.

but seeing them break the absolute ceiling is liberating every time so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

actually wait. who's running arendelle right now?

The more I think about it....

.....The more I have to agree with certain people in the frozen fandom regarding that the Norse gods should not be in Frozen 3/4. I know its a stretch to say this as the Frozen franchise is set in a Scandinavian setting and we have that concept art showing shadows that resemble the pop cultural portrayal of vikings and the ethereal castle in the sky that one may assume to be Asgard/Valhalla.

But as others have said, it is too early to assume. For all we know, the shadow could be that of Aren, the villain, or an original viking character who was the previous fifth spirit with the ethereal city being Ahtohallan. Or I could be wrong and the Norse gods will be involved. We need more info, so we have to wait and see.

Personally since the Frozen franchise is centered around different Scandinavian cultures i would love the series to focus on Anna and Elsa discovering the cultural heritage of both their mother(Sami/Northuldra) and Father(Arendelle/Viking/Norse). But that's just me.

if Disney where to make an animated movie focused on Norse/Germanic mythology(Aesir, Vanir, Jotnar) be it an adaptation of a famous Norse Hero(Sigurd, Beowulf etc), and original character(viking prince/hero or viking princess/ heroine) or a prequel series/franchise focused on Aren. I would very much prefer it to be set during the viking period/age

Changing Ahtohallan's purpose and Elsa's power source

I've been examining what we know about Frozen III so far and this thing right here is really interesting

Changing Ahtohallan's Purpose And Elsa's Power Source

Frozen II made it perfectly clear what gave Elsa her powers. It was Ahtohallan. No one had any doubts about that after watching the sequel. So, what gives?

I suppose the source of Elsa's powers will be heavily altered and changed in next movies. This also implies Ahtohallan's role will be changed.

It was not a living being, a living god or anything like that in Frozen II. More like a magical place with some mind of its own, that's how it was able to gift Elsa her ice powers. That's what the movie implied to us.

Seems like Frozen III is going to throw that out of the window. Someone (probably the previous Fifth Spirit) gave Elsa her powers, it was not the magical iceberg that done the deed.

And that means Fifth Spirits are not Ahtohallan's subjects and servants. It's the other way around. They created Ahtohallan centuries earlier. If the Fifth Spirit is Batman, Ahtohallan is their Batcave 😂

That is why Elsa feels connected to Ahtohallan - because it's created by the same ice powers she possesses.
