I always find myself at a loss for what to say in my captions lol.
These are all some old OCs from 2015. I've redrawn them a bunch of times since then, and they keep changing xD Aard is especially hard to pin down, but I think I'm getting there.
They are from a loose medieval fantasy story about Halling defining his place in the world, and getting payback on some mean wizards! >:) Idek, something something found family and monsters.

In 6 years, I've never drawn this characters face and thought "Yeah thats the guy!". Until today, that is. Huh.

These two drawings are me trying some layout ideas - idk for what, but I love me the "Monster and man/Hunter and prey" dynamic. Ideally, I would like to redo these by giving them my π―π―π―π―π― bestest in the next iteration.
I do prefer the left one, it was done first and the second was kind of an afterthought, and a bit more messy.

π MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?
Hallings primordial form was inspired by the little mermaid, the Hans Christian Andersen story! I had a really nice copy of that book with haunting watercolour illustrations. Then I decided that he should be an eel-like evil witch⦠and at the same time I was playing with the concept of a sea monster cuddling on the rocks with a lover. Those two ideas merged, and Halling was born! :D Or sth like that, lol
(So I guess he was always meant to be a monster, that was the first thing about him. the second thing would be his love for language - at the time I had classes that spoke about the ability of infants to learn any and many languages up to a certain age, and he never lost that ability)
Dolphins were my OBSESSION at the time (around 2016), so his initial designs were pretty informed by that. Lately, I upped the salmon aspect of his Holy Trinity :P
Because salmons are cool af! And the DRAMA of it all, the inherent doom of fighting up the river. The koi turns into a dragon, the salmon spawns and dies, and the corpses nourish the next generation. I like that!

Thank u for the ask! :D This made me think about Hallings early days with human company β and Iβve decided that his oldest possession is a band of silk with two small bells!
The humans who taught him to talk were travelling merchants. You have to picture a situation where u and your buddies are crossing the ocean, and one night you hear a strange noise on deck. Pirates?? No, a creature so long that it doesnβt fit on the boat, with a face longer than a horses, with three different maws, grins at you, and repeats βWho iss tthhheeeere?β back at you. And you gotta realize that the strange voices you heard from the sea the past few days was this exact creature, echoing your language back to you.
Anyway; this made me think of Halling in his larval human stage; vaguely bipedal, robbing your pantry at 3 AM and dashing from shadow to shadow. You wanna keep your eye on that! Like a feral cat you donβt trust not to swipe at you. So he earned the white band of silk and bells! :3
To him, thatβs the very first fine, beautiful thing he has ever possessed. Halling is drawn to fancy, expensive things, and the luxurious texture and the shiny bronce bells mean a lot to him! He connects this item to the first time someone talked to him, and the first times communicating, sitting down and having his hair tied with the silk. (The person who gives him the silk is an older woman named Minou btw, sheβs not really his mom, but probably comes the closest)
If he lost it, he would be devastated! :( He likely wouldnβt realize how much it meant to him, after all he would be in a position to get more and fancier ones β and probably already owns ones that are quite expensive β but. He wouldnβt cry over it. However, it would hurt a lot, as he doesnβt have any other items from when he first made his exodus from the sea, being met with kindness the first time. He would search for it for a long while!
