Hocus pocus 2 is so shit compared to the original but the ending makes me cry every goddamn time.
Winnie bitching at her sisters and trying to become all powerful but when they leave begging for them to come back? For her magic to leave? Immediately starting to cry and losing her confidence. "My powers are nothing without my sisters!" And "Oh what is this feeling? Oh! I think it is my heart, I fear it is breaking. Oh I cannot bear it!" Me too Winnie omfg?? She was happy when she was dying. So happy she laughed and thanked Becca because she knew she'd be with them again.
Those are her sisters!! Give them back!! I cried, she cried, the fucking book cried!! Dear god
Watched the new Hocus Pocus last night, and I have to say I do not understand all the hate it's gotten in reviews.
It is perfectly cute, and completely in keeping with the spirit of the original. The Sanderson sisters are, of course, excellent, but I also enjoyed the expanded backstory they got at the start of the movie. It was cute, funny, and well cast. It sets up the end of the movie cleanly and succinctly, while also being a fun, well-written bit of new lore that didn't drag on too long.
The new kid/teen actors in this one are, to be entirely honest, better than the kid/teen actors in the original. They're not the most amazing actors I've ever seen, but neither were the actors for Max and Dani in the first one.
Even the plot makes about as much sense as the original. Are there gaping plot holes and the recurring question of how a couple of teens consistently outwit a trio of powerful witches over 100 years old? Sure - in both movies! They even lampshade that fact from the original movie towards the start of the new one, with a comment from the Sanderson sisters about how this time they won't be fooled by fake dawn or anything else! And then they proceed to get fooled a bunch by a teenager, because it's fun and silly to watch and also happened repeatedly in the original movie.
So many reviews seem to complain that the Sanderson sisters aren't scary in the new movie, but they weren't actually scary in the first movie either! If you thought they were scary, it was probably because you were a kid at the time. Having watched the first Hocus Pocus and then the new one back-to-back, though? I can promise you, they are pretty much equally (not) scary in both.
So anyway, if you're like me and were hesitating on giving the new Hocus Pocus a chance because of all the negative reviews, then I say you should go for it! Just maybe put the nostalgia goggles for the first one aside for a moment to acknowledge that it, too, was in fact a silly Halloween movie for kids that cared more about having fun than about being A Great Film.
And then the Hocus Pocus 2 will be a blast.
Movies Watched, Sept. to Oct. 2022
Took October as a chance to reset. Continuing to watch a lot of comedies, a few of them were really surprising. Trying to stay afloat with the absurdity of it all. Noticing that I am losing the stamina for gore and violent films that feel hollow or purely referential. We’re so close to end of the year, again. View On WordPress
