A Fall Theory on Neverland and Youth
There is potential in the entertaining possibility of contrasting the brothers’ “dotage” and apparent age and appearances with the Lost Boys’ youth. We already know Rafal gets tired of the youth and life around him. We’ve already seen him feel at ease in an old body, and compare himself to the reclusive Rabid Bear Rex.
Rafal: These Id-driven freaks!
Rhian: [sigh] Be polite, Rafal. You were a child once.
Now, briefly onto a concept of Freudian childhood since I find it relevant. Not all children are cherubic. Some are Id-driven little freaks! Through no real fault of their own. They just haven’t been taught societies’ standards. It is parents and society that form a child’s Superego after all. The Id is the only structure we’re born with, and has no need to develop.
Next, it’s a common-enough refrain that children are cruel, merciless, and demanding. (If you’ve ever read the impactful short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, that’s a good point of reference.) They exhibit unsociable behavior. There’s even such a thing called Peter Pan Syndrome. Thus, I would think everything is a game in Neverland, or so treated as a game by its inhabitants. If anything, I think Neverland politics are probably some ludicrous version of Never politics but burlesque and childish. It was said to be founded by Nevers. Probably, it’d be a wild mix of obvious egocentrism, greed, all about gain and profit (the pirate element to it), deception, living in the moment, probably involving some measure of hedonism, impulsivity, incivility, actual antisocial behavior, and zero trust among all parties. So basically, children exploit each other, and have no loyalties, except to themselves. Children are fundamentally unreliable. Driven entirely by instinct, consumed by it. The Pan is probably an amoral being.
And, Soman has such vivid characterization always. It must be in his nature to be edgy. It would be nice, nay, immensely satisfying, to see "child" characters that aren't paragons of purity and innocence but in fact, something of the opposite. This is a fascinating idea, partly derived and interpreted from the retelling of Peter Pan from Beasts and Beauty or something I heard about a particular view on children, being bloodthirsty, backstabbing, demanding retribution, being uncivilized and wild without any parental or societal influence to form their morals in a vast, isolated wilderness, in a world that isn’t ruled by the tyranny of adulthood. Although, this idea may actually belong to J. M. Barrie. Soman probably draws from it. I've never read the original Peter Pan, so I wouldn't know.
so recently i decided 2 go back and read the 1st peter pan book now as an adult and hav concluded that peter is awful and hook was right 2 want 2 kill him in this essay i will,,, ok but fr tho let's begin w/ other stuff aside from that, 1 of the things i was *not* expecting was that from the way J M Barry wrote hook,,, hook was black, he's constantly described as "the black pirate" and also was described w/ an old timey word 2 mean "some1 who has a dark complexion" so basically disney whitewashed captain hook and then every1 else copied disney's design so now every1 thinks hook was white, not relevant 2 the point im making here but i thought it was interesting
ok so now the actual bs peter pan is a over 100 year old pedo, hook in the story was said 2 b black beard's bo'sun which means that peter has been around since b4 then [will explain y b4 then and not at the same time l8r] now this book [peter and wendy] was published in 1911 according 2 the website im using 2 read it [bc i rly don't feel comfortable owning a copy of a book written by an alleged pedo] [c also J M Barry's other work where he wrote a book 4 a family who he was friends w/ abt their irl baby being stripped naked as a gift] and i also no longer hav the audio cassettes of the book i had as a kid and even if i did i don't hav any way 2 play the audio, however if peter is alive in 1911 and was also alive when hook was a child and bo'sun 2 black beard [yes some bo'sun's were children due 2 kids being enlisted in the navy and having 2 run away and a bo'sun is a job where they would just report 2 the captain if any of the crew was doing anything they weren't supposed 2 so this makes sense] peter would at this point b over 100 years old since the golden age of piracy was somewhere in the early 1600s and blackbeard himself died in 1718 according 2 google, so even if we're being generous and say that hook joined peter in 1718 that would still mean he met peter almost 200 years ago
so now onto y i think hook was younger than peter i don't remember 4 sure which book it was in [the 1st book, the 2nd or peter pan in scarlet] but i remember something abt the pirates being the lost boys that peter got bored of that grew up, which would suggest that all the pirates [hook included] were once lost boys, i am choosing 2 stick w/ this given that it is very in character 4 peter, 4 example in the 1st book it's stated that as well as killing the pirates [yes, killing, not fighting and "defeating" them] he also kills lost boys, this is shown by the book saying he "thins the heard" and then again when tootles tells peter 2 kill him and the only reason he doesn't is that wendy stops him
so what makes me think peter is a pedo? i can think of off the top of my head [from what i hav re-read of the 1st book] -a line where it is said that peter "does something" 2 the kids 2 make them fit their trees -peter pan's name being based on a word that was at the time a kid word 4 penis -him sharing a bed w/ all the lost boys and there being a "strict rule against turning w/out giving a signal at which all of them would turn" [which kinda implies they r all spooning] -peter being the father and wendy the mother -his constant flirting w/ wendy -hook being thankful 2 hav gone into the hideout "unmolested" [which suggests that he was by peter when hook was a lost boy] -the bit where wendy asks for a type of flower called "babies" for her house they r building around her and the lost boys not knowing that this is a type of flower and knowing peter doesn't either "rush to start singing again before peter orders babies" so basically they knew that peter would demand for them 2 try 2 make babies if they didn't stop him
aside from that peter is also just abusive even if u don't agree w/ me abt him being a pedo [again just what I remember off the top of my head from book 1] -despite what the films say, in the book his imaginary meals only made him feel full but he hit those that didn't play along -as mentioned previously he kills lost boys -he hits the fairies -he kills pirates even when they aren't going anywhere near him "for fun" -the lost boys "aren't allowed 2 know anything peter doesn't know abt" -2 make the lost boys look different from him he makes them make clothes out of bearskin from bears they hav 2 kill themselves
so yeh peter pan was awful and hook was right 2 try 2 kill him given that peter was just kidnapping children and then doing all this bs
