There is something surreal about seeing him in this light.

“I’m trying Y/N! I’m trying to see how we can make things work, but it’s not looking so great right now.”

His sharp tone and the use of your full name, rather than any nickname, had you reeling back.

His voice had you confused. The lisp feeling like love, but the words so sickening, they have you at a crossroad. You want to melt in his arms, but your pride doesn’t allow you to.

Endless nights of back and forth, over one thing or another. No time for each other, no patience with each other, everything had you on edge. Every tiny little thing that either one of you did set the other off.

To someone observing from the outside it would seem like a domestic, settled, home life. Like an ‘Old married couple fighting’. The difference was, you weren’t old. You weren’t married. And right now, if things kept going in the direction that they were, you wouldn’t be much of a couple either.

It was a domestic, settled, home life, yes. But like many homes, it was starting to become broken, and battered, and bruised.

Insults were being thrown around more casually, less meals were being eaten together, less words exchanged in the car, less kisses, less hugs, less hand holding, less smiling at each other, less talking to each other, less being around each other. Less and less.

It was nearing the end. You could sense it. You’d have to let him go soon. You were holding on too tightly for a relationship that had lost all its will to continue.

The bond of two best friends turned lovers had now given up the fight.

“Well, I’m trying too! Jimin I’m trying-”

“No, no, don't start crying now.” His voice wavered at the sight of your tears, “Don’t do that.”

Your face grew wet quickly and your chest strained. The stemming pain was growing thorns and you could physically feel them. Quickly turning your face away and wiping the traces of tears, had you returning to look at him with bright red eyes.

The sight of you had him stumbling, not knowing what to say. He wished you would speak up.

He was the one who used to hold you as you shook with sobs, and now here he was asking you to not cry at all. He felt guilt creep up on him like the awaiting shadow of death, constantly looming over his shoulder.

“It hurts Jimin. It hurts that I don’t know what to say to you anymore.”

It was barely a whisper but he heard it.

He heard it loud and clear.

Standing in the living room of your shared apartment, he watched you, as tears of his own threatened to slip down his cheeks. He resisted the urge to hold you. He knew that wouldn’t be right.

This was the twist, wasn’t it?

He got the girl. His best friend. And now this was the part where everything fucked over. Where nothing seemed right anymore. Where normalcy annoyed him. Life was playing another one of its tricks now.

What a sick joke.

You took a deep breath and spoke once more, arms folded across your chest, shuffling your feet, “It hurts and I don-”

“I know! I know it hurts!” He snapped.

Your head whipped up to meet his gaze, hard and stern and hurt plastered all over it. He was in pain, you knew that too. You knew that you weren’t the only one suffering. After all, he had loved you just as much as you loved him, that wasn’t a joke.

“Don’t think that it’s just you that’s hurting. I’m here too.” His voice drowned down with the soft tears he tried to hide, “I’m still here.”

Your gaze softened.

Sometimes, in moments like these, you would find glimmers of reminiscence, a dash of hope. The way you looked at each other, as though the other hung the moon in the sky, and added tiny little moving dots to make stars, so that a symphony of constellations would dance around the moon, it was something pure.

But the purity had become rough around the edges. No longer smooth to the touch.

“You can have the apartment. I’ll call Sejin Hyung and ask for a break up statement to be issued. We’ll call it mutual and move on.” He spoke softly, wiping his tears one last time.

So it was done. 5 years of love gone.

“What do you mean ‘call it mutual’? It is mutual.”

His warm eyes met yours as he spoke with a voice laced with deep emotion, “It’ll never be mutual if it hurts this much.”

You watched him as he backed away from you. Blond hair falling over his eyes.

“You’re my best friend Jimin.”

Sadness flooded his eyes as he moved away from you.

“You can cry now. Let it all go. Let this be just another one of those breakups.”

Just another one of those breakups.

Hearing small footsteps behind you and a voice call out your name, you turned around from the countertop to see Jieun standing in the middle of the kitchen, her hands rubbing her droopy eyes as she stared up at you, resembling that of a long, lost puppy.

A warm smile spread across your face as you exclaimed, “Hey, look at you, you’re up!” as you lifted the little girl into your arms and spun her around, eliciting small giggles from her mouth before setting her down on the kitchen countertop.

Your eyes glanced towards the time before looking back at Jieun, “Do you feel hungry? It’s almost lunchtime.”

She nodded quickly, a big smile spreading across her face when she asked, “Can we eat cookies? I really liked your cookies last time!”

You giggled as you pinched her nose softly, “Uh-huh, you can’t eat cookies for lunch now, can you?! How about we make some macaroni and cheese and then we’ll bake cookies for snack time later? Does that sound like a good idea?”

Her eyes lit up at that as she grinned, “Mac and cheese?! That’s my favorite! Daddy makes it for me all the time.”

“Well then it’s up to you to pick who’s Mac and cheese you like better okay?” you teased, as she nodded happily before whispering to you, “I think you might win Ms. L/N. Daddy sometimes burns the cheese and it turns all black and burnt.”

You laughed at that before saying, “Well, I guess it’s time to teach him how to properly cook, huh?”

“Or Ms.L/N, you could come live with us? Then you can cook delicious food for me and daddy!” Jieun exclaimed as she clapped her hands together, an innocent smile on her face.

-summary: forced marriages almost never worked out for anyone. so what made your parents think that it would for you and park jimin?

“Do you, Kang Y/n, take Park Jimin as your lawfully wedded husband?” the priest asks with a calm voice, and you gulp harshly before nodding, not once meeting your husband’s eyes. You know he’s smiling, the energy he’s giving off is overwhelming but you know it’s all fake. Jimin doesn’t love you, nor is he happy about the wedding, but having been born into one of the most powerful royal families came with its share of responsibilities and restraints.

“I do.” and you almost cry right then and there. As soon as the words leave your mouth, you shut your eyes and try gathering yourself. For the thousands of people watching, if not yourself. A tight-lipped smile adorns your lips and you try to make it look natural but it’s really tough to be genuinely happy when you’re getting married to a man you hadn’t even known for a month.

You had been enraged when your parents had told you about this, not even bothering to listen to their explanation which sounded like something along the lines of ‘It’s very good for our kingdom’ before storming out and into your room. You had locked yourself and screamed into the pillow, having learnt that this was one of the best methods to release your anger.

Turns out, your opinion hadn’t really mattered because the next day, you were meeting your to-be-husband and his parents. Not gonna lie, their palace was really enormous, with grand ornaments both on the inside and outside and you couldn’t help but stare in appreciation of the wonderful architecture.

It had all happened in such a rush, both of your parents telling you that they’d take care of the wedding and all you and Jimin had to do was get married without creating a scene. So, now, here you were, in a beautiful white wedding dress with Jimin standing in front of you looking- dare you say- dashing.

“Do you, Park Jimin, take Kang Y/n as your lawfully wedded wife?” His nod shatters your heart, and you can’t help but glare. It was supposed to be the man you loved over there, not some rich boy who didn’t even know how to fold a shirt.

“Now, with the power bestowed upon me, I pronounce you both man and wife.” Everybody stands up, loud cheers filling the area as you finally look at Jimin, his chocolate eyes meeting yours. He’s moving closer before you know it, and the one second he gives you before placing his lips on yours is unhelpful. It’s not even a kiss, just a press of his lips against yours but he makes it seem longer by tilting his head and blocking your connected lips from the view of others. He pulls off but hovers there for a few more seconds to make it seem longer and when he finally pulls back, your eyes are wide and cheeks ablaze.

You look around, the smiling faces of all the people invited to your wedding forcing you to crack one yourself. And although you hate Park Jimin for what he just did- steal your first kiss. You’re not able to resist touching your lips once, the feeling of his plump ones on yours still ghosting around.

The food’s delicious, the people are sweet, and Jimin doesn’t bother you much so you think your marriage isn’t a total flop for you. When you’re in your room, and it’s late at night- the celebrations having just gotten over, the door opens and Jimin enters, clad in his white shirt that has half the buttons unbuttoned. But it isn’t his shirt that catches your attention, nor is it his black dress pants that hug his thighs deliciously, no.

It’s the girl in the wine red dress in his arms who’s kissing him like her life depends on it. Neither one of them have noticed you sitting on the bed, too caught up in their heated make-out session to even bother opening their eyes.

You’re frozen, unable to move as your eyes are fixed on the way Jimin’s hands travel across her entire body, like he wants her. He walks forward, the girl’s back facing you and even as they come closer to the bed where you’re sitting, your mind has stopped working and you’re unable to get up. They’re even closer and Jimin opens his eyes for a split second only to find the bed to lay her down properly, but his eyes meet yours.

Those brown eyes filled with lust widen, only ever so slightly but you notice it. You stare at him, waiting and hoping for him to say something. He parts his lips, and you assume it’s to apologise but as soon as you see what he mouths, your heart stops beating, even the little hope you had left that Jimin wouldn’t hate you leaving you.

“Do you mind?” His words stab through your heart, and you’re glad that he says them silently so that the girl doesn’t hear him and just continues mouthing her way down his neck. Getting up as quickly as possible, you run out the door, shutting it behind you so he doesn’t see the tears in your eyes.

You run. Where? You don’t know, but all you want right now is to get away from all the problems in your life and live freely without anyone holding you back. You knew that Jimin didn’t love you, obviously. But what he did right now, and how his eyes didn’t show a single ounce of regret as he asked you to leave your shared bedroom, left you shocked. And questioning yourself. You had always been taught to love yourself, probably one of the best things your parents did but in this moment, all you knew was that your husband definitely didn’t want you. Despite everything, he was still your legal husband and you couldn’t do anything about it. Your husband who left you feeling worth nothing.

Park Jimin walks around campus like he owns the entire university, hands casually thrown into the pockets of his expensive black pants, sunglasses balancing on top of his intentionally disheveled black hair, silver earrings and studs and rods decorating his earlobes, leather jacket not worn, but strewn over his shoulders, complementing that delicate silver chain around his neck perfectly. Or perhaps, he isn’t wearing a fully black ensemble that likely costs more than your tuition. Maybe he’s a bit more laid back, with an outrageously vibrant sweater, the Gucci logo stamped all over it, blue jeans, ripped at the knee like he had worn right through them. He’s got circular frames surrounding his eyes even though he doesn’t need glasses, a beanie or beret sitting happily on his head if he didn’t have time to put his usual amount of product in his hair, Rolex watch peeking out from the oversized sleeves of his sweater. Park Jimin knows how to wear everything and anything with confidence, flair, so he is hardly difficult to miss.

‪[ 12:56AM ] jimin liked attention, even though he never admitted it out loud, but in times like this when it's dark and he feels alone with his thoughts despite you laying there beside him, it's when he wants to draw little attention to himself, hoping for warm arms to hold him as he tries to fall asleep.‬

with light touches on your arm, he ever so subtly grabs it and puts it over his shoulders while he positions himself properly so that his face can be buried in the space between your chin and chest, his own arms holding onto your ‪torso, legs swinging to your thighs as he breathes in‬ your familiar scent. you slightly move due to the sudden feeling of his hold and when you open your eyes, you see the top of his head in your line of vision.

“baby, you okay?” you croaked, giving into his embrace, a hand now on his hair, gently running your fingers through the strands.

he hums and you can't help but pull back to look at his face.

“you sure?” you ask and he smiles, nodding.

“just wanted to hug you, that's all.”

“okay.” you go back to embracing him, holding on tighter, jimin emitting a contented sigh as you also continue massaging his scalp, your other hand drawing little circles on his back.

he didn't need to say anything else for you to understand and he loved you even more for it.

Standing in the doorway to your apartment, you frown at Jimin. He hums happily to himself, hoisting the grocery bags higher.

"Yeah, well what about the bread aisle?!"

"You were standing right in front of the bread-"

"We never get that kind of bread," you whine. "So why now? Quit teasing me, Park Jimin! All I wanted was a hug!"

Jimin keep laughing as you open the door and stomp inside. You roll your eyes, dropping off everything on the counter before turning to head down the hallway.

You make it all of two steps before two strong arms wrap around your waist, pulling you back. With his chest pressed to your back, you're immediately engulfed in Jimin's scent.

"No way," he hums. "You can't run away from me."

"Why not?"

Turning you around and enveloping you in a tight embrace, Jimin says, "Because you have to help me put the groceries away."

He doesn't see your foot coming down over his own, but he certainly feels it.

You gritted your teeth, scrubbing the pan in your hands more aggressively under the hot, soapy water in the sink, taking the day’s frustrations out on the dirty dishes. Your playlist was blasting through your headphones in your ears, blocking the noise of the city out of your apartment as you focused on the task at hand.

You didn’t hear someone open your apartment door, calling out your name in greeting. Instead, you felt a hand brush against your waist a few seconds later, fingers slightly tickling your side. You shrieked in fear and surprise, spinning around with the sponge in your hand, ready to douse your attacker in dishwater in order to escape. Your sponge made contact with a firm chest covered in a white t-shirt, the FILA logo across the front darkening as the water squeezed out of the sponge through your clenched fist.

Your eyes trailed upward from the wet spot you created, seeing your boyfriend’s confused and slightly amused expression at the situation. When you realized what you had done, you quickly dropped the sponge on the counter, grabbing a dishtowel to dab at Jimin’s t-shirt, your music still playing too loudly for you to hear his laugh at your frantic actions. His fingers wrapped around your wrist, stopping your movements. He gently pried the headphones out of your ears, greeting you with a close-lipped smile that caused his eyes to turn into half-moons.

“Care to explain why you were trying to attack me with the dish sponge, babe? Or were you just trying to get me out of my shirt?” he teased. 

You groaned in embarrassment, dropping your head on his chest, arms falling limply to your sides, dish towel still in hand. He wrapped his arms around you, soothingly rubbing circles on your back as you tried to steady your breathing.

The collection of random art supplies scattered all along the floor contained numerous obnoxious colors, each material clashing with the next, but that was the goal. Ignoring the pile of homework collecting upon your desk, you stared intently at the needle between your fingers, the thread pulling through the fabric until two separate pieces were combined into one uneven sheet. Although disappointed, you were not surprised at the incorrect size. In the end, you were not there to be the best dressed but the…worst.

I know we haven’t talked in a while, but-uhm-I saw Taehyung a couple days ago? I happened to be near where that cafe is—what’s it called—Moodspresso! Do you remember it? We wanted to go when it was new, back when you were taking that coffee-making class with Yoongi. You were such a dork: you wanted to go all around the city to judge cafes by their espressos, even though you weren’t a fan of the bitterness.  

We never did get around to trying it together: I think we tried to make plans, but it was out of the way of where we were, and then life happened, and then, well…it happened.

“Hyung, I don’t think you understand how bad it is… I’m in love with Y/N.”

That’s all you can think about right now, your boatload of assignments and that one overdue essay completely forgotten. You can’t get out of bed; your muscles refuse to budge when you think about the conversation between your two roommates that you were never supposed to have overheard.

There are too many questions filling your head. Park Jimin, best friend (and world’s biggest idiot), is in love with you?

It’s beyond your comprehension at this point, and you want to tell yourself that he’d only said “I love Y/N” — which is all well and good because he says it constantly — but you know what you heard.

And you know it means something completely different.

As if on cue, your phone rings, an old selfie of you and him filling your screen. Your arms are wrapped around his neck, and the two of you grin brightly up at the camera. Now you wonder whether it was just a spontaneous pose, or whether Jimin wanted you close to him. Whether he liked it.

It shocks you because no way, no way can it be possible that he loves you like this when you have harbored feelings, equally strong, for as long as you can remember?

How is it that you know him like the back of your hand, but couldn’t see the signs at all?

Numbly, you press the green button to answer. “Hi? I’m literally across the hall from you…”

Jimin’s excited voice fills your room quickly. “Y/N! Are you awake? You’re usually up by now but you haven’t come out of your room so I thought you were still asleep… but anyways! Do you want to go out for breakfast? Hyung’s cooking right now, so I thought we’d best get out of here as soon as possible.”

You laugh a little at that. Now that you think about it, he’s never failed to make you laugh. “Minnie, he’s the best cook out of us three.”

“Yeah, but he burnt the pancakes yesterday,” he whines, dragging out the last syllable. “I’m not suffering through inedible food again. Hey, if you hurry we could probably sneak out before he forces us to sit and eat.”

“Are you trying to get us killed?”

“No, he loves us too much for that,” Jimin responds solemnly. “He’d probably just toss us out the window. Nothing too life-threatening.”

“Sounds lovely.”

“So, are you coming?”

Jimin knows you’ll say yes. You can’t say no to him, is what you’ve learned through over two decades of friendship — but what does that all mean now?

You force a smile down at your phone, willfully chasing a few bitter thoughts away.

“Give me five minutes.”

You have to admit, these pancakes are far better than any Yoongi could ever whip up.

“Oh, these are good,” Jimin says, voicing your thoughts. “Damn. We should have brought Yoongi hyung, too. Show him where he stands.”

“You can’t compare a twenty-four year old amateur to an entire food chain, Minnie,” you point out, stabbing another piece with your fork. “Besides, you know he’d much rather catch up on sleep than come with. He spent way too much time last night on his essay.”

“Oh, true. Man, he overworks himself so much,” he sighs, scrunching his nose as he eats. “Guy’s gotta take it easy, don’t you think?”

His words barely get into your head; you’re still turning over what happened last night in your mind. You still find it hard to believe that your feelings might be reciprocated in such a way. It’s almost dizzying, that you’ve dreamed about something for so long, but now that it’s finally true, you still can’t wrap your head around it.

And why hadn’t he told you before? All those innocuous “I love you”s, all those little heart emojis sprinkled throughout your text conversations… you’d thought they’d meant far more to you than to him. But now you’re doubting it all.

What if you decide to try it, and it never works? What if you were never meant to be forever? What will become of your friendship then?

Way, way too many questions.

“Hey, Y/N? You okay?”

You look up into Jimin’s concerned eyes, honey-colored and filled with stars as they rest on yours. “Yeah,” you manage weakly before taking another bite. “Just fine.”

“You sure?”

“I said I’m fine.”

“Y/N—”

Your fork clatters down on the plate as you let it fall, your emotions getting the best of you. “Jimin, What the fuck don’t you get about ‘I’m fine’?!”

Your outburst earns you a few glances from the two other parties in the diner, as well as a stunned look from Jimin, and you realize — throughout a whole lifetime of knowing him, you’ve never yelled at him like that, with so much venom in your voice.

“I’m—”

He cuts you off, tilting his head to the side. Wondering. In a sort of daze, you can see it now, in the furrow of his brows; the way he looks at you like you’re his whole world. All those times countless friends mentioned it to you and you brushed it off, they’re all coming back to haunt you.

Little does he know, your world revolves around him, too.

“Y/N, what’s bothering you?” Jimin asks gently, setting his own fork down and gazing at you with worried eyes. “God, I knew something was up when you slept in this morning. That’s just so unlike you.”

He remembers something like that. He remembers even the littlest things about you.

“Maybe I just wanted some extra sleep,” you challenge, raising your head high. “Maybe I was tired. You wouldn’t know that, would you? Not when you and Yoongi stayed up until, oh, three in the morning or so talking about your fucking love life.”

Jimin pales at your last sentence, and once again, you know you’ve gone too far. The stricken look on his face says it all. “Y/N, how…”

“I heard you,” you whisper, swallowing thickly. “I wanted water, and I came downstairs, a-and I heard you. And Yoongi. And… my name.”

Jimin, bless his soul, is a little more put together than you are right now — you, tears threatening to spill from your eyes. Why is admitting that you love him so difficult? Maybe it’s years and years of keeping that emotion boxed up inside that’s preventing you from being able to express it now.

“Look,” he starts, staring right at you, “first, Y/N… nothing I said last night was a lie. Nothing. God, I’ve loved you for literally forever. I know it’s weird—”

No, you want to cut in, launch yourself into his arms. No, it’s not weird. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted.

“—but I can literally see the fucking stars in your eyes, and even my entire future sometimes,” he finishes.

Jimin is rambling now, words tumbling out of his mouth as fast as he can spit them out while maintaining his composure, cheeks impossibly red.

“I hate it when you smile at Yoongi, even though I know there’s nothing going on between you two. I hate it when you smile at any guy, really, because I always want that guy to be me. A-and I was so damn shocked when I realized that… Like, I want to marry you and get a cozy little house and have our own children, you know? How fucking crazy is that? You’re my best friend, heaven’s sake, I shouldn’t be feeling like that. But it’s there, and I-I… Fuck. It could have been anyone else, but all along… it was always you,” he ends, eyes falling shut as he slumps back into his chair. “Shit. I wasn’t supposed to say all that.”

That is a lot of information, and you just stare at him while you process it all. Everything he’s just said, slowly working its way into your brain.

“I want that guy to be me…”

“...want to marry you…”

“...cozy little house…”

“...have our own children…”

“..shouldn’t be feeling like that...”

“...always you.”

Tentatively, Jimin carefully takes your hand from across the table, and the skin contact sends your brain cells into overdrive.

“Shit, Y/N,” he breathes, desperate for some reaction, any reaction. “Say something, please. Hit me, scream at me, push me away, whatever. Do something,” you hear him plead, his voice cracking, and that’s when you break.

“Fuck you,” you shudder, tears blurring your vision. “I can’t believe — I can’t believe you… for so long, why didn’t you just tell me?”

Jimin sniffles, thumb coming up to catch a stray teardrop on your face. “What, and ruin this? Us?”

“No,” you protest, shaking your head. “It… this was already ruined, Minnie. It’s been like that for a while. Nothing you could have done would have fixed it.”

“What? What do you mean, Y/N, I—”

“Idiot,” you mumble, eyes looking anywhere but at him. “For so damn long, I’ve loved you like this. In silence. I gave you my heart when we were eleven and you still have it, even now.”

And if Jimin had any qualms about kissing you in the middle of a diner before, you certainly weren’t aware of them now. No, that is the least of your concerns as he pulls you in for a deep kiss; you can taste the saltiness on his lips and you realize he’s been crying. Out of relief and happiness, you realize, and you start too, knowing damn well that there are a thousand ways this morning could have gone wrong, and somehow, you were blessed with this one.

“I love you,” he whispers into your ear. “And I don’t mean the way you probably thought I did for the past decade or so.”

This earns him a laugh from you as you lean in closer to his touch, the warmth of his body against yours.

“I love you, too,” you reply, not caring that people are most probably giving you two the weirdest looks of all time. You’ll deal with that later. “Oh, and don’t worry about that. You’ll have many more decades to make it all up to me.”

Jimin narrows his eyes at you, a tiny smile on his face. “Is that a challenge I hear, Y/N?”

You smirk lightly in return, fully satisfied at having the last laugh.

“Guess you’ll just have to wait and find out.”

At times (more often than not) you have this feeling that comes and goes. Missing, twisting the glittery gold string between your fingers, you think, is too constant of a feeling these days. 

Missing him. 

Scattered around on the blue tile are cheaply equipped decorations you yet have to hang on the wall, multiple foil stars hover from above, lazily swaying to a nonexistent wind. Watery sun rays douse the empty classroom in a dull yellow, draping the ambience in a glow that is almost fairytale-like. It’s like a half-done picture straight out of a children’s story book. But despite this, there is a hollowness surging inside you that is ever present these days, paling everything else in sight. Spread eagled on the floor, you lie with your eyes closed, sighing every few seconds.
